Atrocious!
Pros:

We stayed here for a celebration. We checked in and found the room to be basic, grubby and shabby and in addition, I haven’t seen a shower curtain for years! Unbelievable in a 4* hotel! The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the old taps in the bathroom couldn’t be fully turned off. The carpet was old and smelly. There was lino in the bathroom which was positively antique!

The service was non existent. We went to the bar before the function started and we had to ask the person on reception if we could be served because there was no one working there who served us after having to wait at least 20 minutes, but didn’t know how to walk the till as it ‘was a new system’ so asked us to sign for the drinks. We had no idea that the 2 glasses of wine came to £25 PLUS £2.59 service charge! The function came to an end relatively early so we went to the bar with friends for a night cap only to find it closes a 22.30 and even if you’re a resident paying a lot for a room they won’t serve you and put it on your tab! But as I said, thank goodness it was closed due to the next day’s discovery of how exorbitant their prices are! The staff were uncaring and clearly their hospitality training was non existent.

We also witnessed another guest expressing his displeasure and said he’d get better service in a Travel Lodge!

Very relieved to leave! 4*?? How have they got that rating??

Pros:

The hotel states fresh local produce, breakfast was hard bacon, strange tasting sausages (not edible) tinned button mushrooms and almost £19 - really?? As per another’s review mould in bathroom, paint flaking on woodwork, dirty walls, quilt cover far too small for the bed, one coffee pouch and one chocolate pouch in a double room. Paid the extra £50 for 2 dogs, and for that you expect the rooms to be clean. Would not recommend and definitely would not stay ever again - the owner seriously needs to update everything or close the place

Pros:

Literally the worst value for money of any hotel room in my life. Arrived before 11pm Saturday, yet couldn't get a drink in the bar or room (all pubs in town were also closed). Other guests were also refused service, and were very unhappy. Shower was hanging off the wall. No USB chargers/mains plugs by bed. Dated rooms with stained, dirty paintwork and faded old pictures. Curtains too small for window. Mould in the bathroom, pervasive smell of damp in room. Hot water takes minutes to come through, making hand-wash impractical. Call to reception unanswered. Car charger not working. Single decaf sachet / chocolate / toiletries in double room. Building is lovely though, it's just a shame that neither the staff nor the management seem to give the slightest care to the place or its guests.

Not a premium hotel and not fine dining.
Pros:

It is easy to criticise, so instead I'll just present the facts.
On approach the place looks lovely with nicely trimmed hedges and a gardener doing work.
Reception was empty so joined the queue until someone finally turned up.
Our dog friendly room was small was small with old cobwebs. The en suite grubby with many old marks and stains as well as overpriced rotting wood. Hot water took many minutes to arrive each time you wanted it.
The hotel claims 'fine dining'. We had to go and find someone as the dog friendly music devoid bar was empty and reception did not answer the provided telephone. The rose wine ordered was warm due to not being stored in a drinks fridge. They offered to place it in the freezer for ten minutes. We opted for a large warm that did not appear to be the claimed 250ml. Two steaks both appeared to be the same despite one being medium and the other medium rare. Both came with a small leafy salad, chips and peppercorn sauce, nothing else except for one having been cooked with the cling film still on it. Cheese and crackers had soft crackers and one bad brown and damaged grape.
Breakfast was table service again in the dog friendly bar. This time we were given napkins which we didn't have at dinner. Offered a buffet but none was laid out anywhere. Black pudding on full English was the cut off the end. Toast was one pre sliced basic loaf each with one pat of butter between two after having to ask for it. Tea was a large pot for four cups with one builders tea bag per pot. At check out they tried to charge for extras without taking the already paid deposit into account.
Is this really fine dining experience? Some claim the hotel is 'shabby chic'. Couldn't find any evidence of chic.
Prefer Premiere Inn at a third of the cost.

Great country hotel
Pros:

Lovely stay in this old country hotel.
On check out it was quite upsetting to witness a guest shouting and swearing at the young receptionist. He was clearly wanting to get money off anything he could think of; including overdone sausages in his breakfast! They have video recordings of the reception which I’m sure will confirm he was told about the early check in charge. I hope he is banned from ever setting foot in the hotel again. Katie handled the situation very professionally despite the abuse she was getting. Any complaints should be made in writing to the manager.

Lovely shabby chic hotel
Pros:

We stayed for one night after attending a family birthday here on the late summer bank holiday. It is a great location with beautiful gardens. My husband and I stayed in a spacious four poster ensuite room and our son stayed in a smaller single enough suite room next door. The hotel and rooms have a country house lived-in feel with classic antique furniture. The beds were comfortable, dressing gowns and slippers were provided as well as tea and coffee and complimentary water. It felt more like a large family house than a hotel as there were lots of homely touches. The breakfast was lovely and made to order. We had scrambled egg and smoked salmon along with a choice of cereals, fruit etc. We will definitely stay again as we have family in nearby Box and it's a handy location when attending family gatherings.

Won’t go back
Pros:

Service was poor and the hotel seemed unclean especially on the stair wells.

Plus it seems hotels.com overcharged me and I’m still waiting for a response.

An overnight stay
Pros:

Stayed here last Sunday en route to Dorset. The hotel was quite quiet when we arrived although there had been a wedding on earlier in the weekend.

The hotel is a mile or so outside Corsham and is easy to find. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Our room had a decent selection of teas and coffees on the hospitality tray plus two bottles of water. The wifi was fairly reliable.

We had an excellent meal on the Sunday evening and our breakfast the following day was cooked to order.

I have stayed here once before, I think in 2015, so I hope it isn't a further ten years before I return!

Beautiful gardens and friendly staff
Pros:

Pleasantly surprised with this hotel, we stayed for two nights with friends. Beautiful gardens, delicious breakfasts both days, great bar and lounge. Very friendly staff. Rooms were a little old fashioned and in need of a little love, but both rooms had very comfortable beds. Great selection of pubs and restaurants 10 minute walk across the side field. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Room and hallways filthy, very tired rooms, in need of major refurbishment. Avoid.
Pros:

Entrance and hallways when approaching rooms were dirty, with lots of dead flies on windowsill and floor.
Room is very tired, with cracked paintwork.
Cobwebs in every corner, plenty of spiders.
Bathroom equally dirty and tired, shower head didn’t work.
Staff at reception nice when checking in and out, I did give them my feedback when checking out for which they apologised, also saying they would have moved me if I had asked (I’d already unpacked after a long day and had to head out to meet colleagues so not really an option for me).
The hotel and grounds are lovely from the outside, it’s a shame it hasn’t had the investment needed. I wouldn’t stay there again or recommend to anyone.

the poor reviews say it all
Pros:

This place went down the pan when petra left as she was the only person there that cared about good service.
And the very bad reviews show it.
spend your money elsewhere as there are better places around that area and better value for money.

4* Hotel? I don't think so.
Pros:

Initially this looked like a lovely 4* hotel in a good location. The photos made it look much better than it was.

Upon checking in, I was given directions to my room across the courtyard and I was disappointed from the off. The door didn't shut properly and there was a huge gap between the bottom of the door and the floor - surely these should be fire doors? Secondly, there was paint flaking off the walls and the room could really do with a bit of modernisation.

I was led to believe that there was wifi throughout the hotel, but this clearly wasnt the case in this part of the hotel. Even the TV kept freezing and juddering.

The following morning I went to breakfast only to be told "The brekkie room is up the stairs and on the right". Not once was I told how breakfast worked and how to order, where to sit etc. Very unprofessional I thought!

After breakfast I requested a change in rooms for the reasons stated above and was allocated another room later that day. At least I had a WiFi connection here as did the television. Shame about the rowdy drunks trying to get into my room at 4am (although I am not blaming this on the hotel).

After 2 nights of poor sleep and poor service, I checked out of the hotel 2 days early and had to go elsewhere. Not only did I not receive any refund for the 2 remaining nights, I never even received an apology.

4* hotel? I don't think so

Should have been a treat, but it wasn’t
Pros:

On arrival to the hotel, you appreciate the grounds and the exterior of the hotel. However, when entering, the inside, it is gloomy and tired. Our room wasn't ready and we were told, it wouldn't be until 3.00pm. This was fair enough as we knew the check-in time. The very nice receptionist explained they had a staff shortage when we asked for a drink and said, she would go to the bar to see if she could manage what we had asked for. There is an inner courtyard you could sit, but no shade and the parasols weren't up. When my husband tried to open one, the string just broke away, due to deterioration of the string. The receptionist offered us to sit in the garden out the back. Now these were truly wonderful and beautifully kept. The garden furniture was piled up in an un-orderly fashion in a corner. The receptionist wan't sure why this had been done. She scrambled to get a table over to some shade on the grass for us. We were very grateful for her efforts. We enjoyed a drink and admired the space. We had glass of nuts delivered with the drinks. We had not ordered them so assumed they were complimentary.
When we got access to our room, our initial impression was, it looks Okay. However, when you look more closely, you see things like the bed valence was very creased and it had been hoisted up in areas so it didn't look that inviting. It made you feel a bit worried about the cleanliness of the bed and bathroom. To be fair, both were clean in the areas that mattered most. The skirting, doors and window sills all needed cleaning and a fresh coat of paint.
We had booked dinner in the restaurant. The young girl who served us was the only other person we actually saw. She was professional and a credit to the hotel. The steak was tasty and the chips were great. However, a handful of leaves with no dressing was very uninspired and at £35 pp, we found it steep. The atmosphere in the restaurant was truly the worst I have ever experienced. You could hear a pin drop and it was really morgue like. I asked if we could have some background music. The waitress didn't know how to make it work so I asked if I could play my own. It wasn't a problem, so I did. Afterwards, as it was early, we wanted to catch up on a programme in the TV lounge. My husband discovered there were no batteries in the remote. After an extensive hunt around the hotel for new batteries by the receptionist, there were none, so some had to be removed from another device. We were grateful for her effort.
We had a good sleep, peaceful and comfortable.
Breakfast, it was really disappointing. No pastries, yoghurt, fresh fruit, just a very overpriced (£20 pp) cooked option, plus cereal if you wished to have it. Again the decor in this beautiful room, needed cleaning and repainting.
On checking out, we offered feedback to the receptionist/possible Manager. She wasn't interested and admitted she didn't read Trip Advisor reviews. We suggested that perhaps she should, as there is definitely a theme on the negatives which they could address and improve. When my husband checked through the Bill and asked for a breakdown, the nuts were on there. He wasn't bothered about this, but on principle we hadn't ordered them, but were charged over £3.
I left the receptionist with my final observation which was the splendid stone urns out the front of the hotel and how nice they would look filled with colourful flowers. She said that they had all just been removed. I replied, are you saying that all your bedding plants have been removed in June? yes she said. New ones would be replaced soon. When we left the hotel, I looked into the urns, you could see there was no sign of recent earth or plants that had been planted in the urns for a long time. Just the dried patina of the aged urns. I was only offering some feedback on how they could improve the welcome and first impressions guests receive on arrival. I guess there is a money issue on whoever owns the hotel and how much they wish to spend to improve it and give their guests a better experience. Because of our experience, I wouldn't revisit and I wouldn't recommend.
