we spent one night here at the end of our time in the country. The location is great and very walkable for nearly everywhere a tourist might visit. Our twin room was small, and spartan, with one small window overlooking a very noisy alley (lots of drunk people screaming late into the night). Its likely not a great sign when the hotel provides earplugs in the room. The wifi worked well. Beds were ok, but very scratchy sheets and duvete. Staff were ok. The breakfast was pretty good.
I’ve been staying at Hotel Alexander regularly for work over the past few years, and it’s always a great experience. The hotel is lovely and perfectly located, but the real highlight is the staff — always friendly, welcoming, and professional. A special thanks to Marc at reception, who consistently goes above and beyond to make every stay enjoyable. Highly recommended!
Great location in middle of Altstadt (Old town) Zurich. Very clean, modern and comfortable rooms. The staff was most friendly and helpful. Very nice breakfast provided. Also offer choice of water (still or carbonated) and fresh fruit on each floor as well as minibar in room.
There is no escaping the fact that Zurich is an expensive place, so it is not easy to find a good hotel that charges less than €300 per night and has a practical location.
Hotel Alexander does.
In the middle of the most popular street in Old Town and within walking distance of most major attractions - including the train station (600m, walkable if you don't have heavy luggage) - it is very convenient.
The property is old and the hotel has to function within the constraints of the building ; that means tiny foyer, small rooms, mini & slow lift and narrow corridors.
On arrival, I explained to the friendly receptionist that we were on a 6-week trip and had substantial luggage. He was most understanding and gave us the option of chosing between 2 rooms, which we inspected. Frankly, both were very small, but we very much appreciated his flexibility. We picked room 203 and organised best we could. It overlooked the square in front and had the facilities that you come to expect : small fridge, safe and TV with good choice of channels (including international and apps). The bathroom was similarly compact, but hygienicaclly tiled floor-to-ceiling and a heating rack for the white towels.
Breakfast is in a small room on the 2nd floor, where 1 woman works extremely hard to keep up. Not the most extensive buffet, but you won't walk out hungry.
The Alexander ticked most of our boxes for a 2-night stay in Zurich. In other cities you'd expect much higher standards for that sort of money, but for Zurich they offer good value for money.
Great location, mis-sold on the room. The location in the old town is great for exploring Zurich, and the hotel itself was clean. However compared to the images on the website when we booked the room we received was much different. They have misrepresented these rooms and on reflection you can see a common theme of people who have had similar rooms saying the same thing on here. It may be that if you get one of the rooms as pictured you may have a nice stay, but beware you may also get the room we got!
The bed was worse than any hostel I have stayed in, the mattress was very thin and every turn or movement could be felt. We must of only had about 3 hours sleep, the room was also roasting hot, which meant leaving the window open, which in turn meant hearing the church bells every hour, until the room had cooled enough for us to be able to shut the window.
The bathroom was clean, but very small with a big chip in the shower tray and a shower waste which was broken.
I am just glad it was only for one night!
We stayed for only one night, visiting the Christmas market in Zurich, and the hotel was ideally located for us to walk easily to all the different markets. It was clean, breakfast was good and it ticked all the boxes. We are pleased with our choice as base for the Markets.
Small rooms but in the centre so close to all that you need, which is a plus. We chose this location for the Christmas markets and we weren't disappointed.
Hotel also offers free flowing water in the lobby.
We had a great stay! The location is perfect, about a 10 minute walk from the main train station and central to a lot of attractions. The hot breakfast was delicious and the staff were all very welcoming!
Our last night here and a genuinely lovely experience. The hotel is a really good 3 star establishment. Staff are friendly and helpful, providing us with free city WiFi and adapters for our devices. Breakfast is lovely and the hotel is central to all Zurich’s Christmas attractions. Absolutely no complaints,
The hotel does exactly what it needs to clean, functional rooms without any major luxuries, and a breakfast that’s fair for what you pay.
The real highlight is the location: right in the city center, with everything just a short walk away.
Perfect if you’re looking for convenience and a straightforward stay.
We selected this hotel from the internet while in the US. It is perfectly situated amongst shopping and restaurants. We could not have picked a better location to stay. The hotel is clean, safe and it had everything. There are three convenience stores and a pharmacy within one block. The breakfast in the morning was a buffet style hot breakfast with cold cuts, local breads, cheese and dairy products. There was a great selection of espressos and coffees as well. We could not have been happier with our selection!!! Highly recommended for your stay!!!!
The hotel itself is in a great location. The rooms are small which is fine, and it was really nice that the beverages and snacks in the mini fridge were complementary. The bed was not the best - sorta hard and old. Also, the room was extremely stuffy and had a musty smell - so it was nice to open the windows, but because we were in the room RIGHT over the front entry way to the hotel, all the staff/restaurant people next door smoked nonstop right out front there and that came in our room so we just dealt with the stuffiness. The breakfast room is very cramped and everyone was bringing their suitcases in so that made it more squished BUT the breakfast was decent. Our last morning we woke up to dripping from the ceiling in the bathroom - the front desk was quick to respond and turns out the person in the room above us decided to flood their bathroom with a long shower...luckily we had an early train ride and just got the heck out of there! Set your expectations a bit low, and you might be quite happy with your experience here lol.
Situated on a pedestrian-only street within walking distance of Zurich Central Railway Station, Hotel Alexander offers an ideal base for exploring the city. Despite its central location near a bustling area, the hotel maintains a quiet and relaxing atmosphere throughout. The staff were exceptionally friendly and consistently attentive, enhancing the overall guest experience. Breakfast was satisfactory, and the hotel's location provides easy access to a wide range of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options.
This hotel was perfect for a 2 night stay to explore Zurich. Convenient location, less than a 10 minute walk from the station, and a great base to walk around the city. We had a twin room on the 2nd floor which was compact but had everything we needed. The room was clean and quiet, and the beds were super comfortable.
Location great. Breakfast great & staff replenished cooked food often. Supplied loan of electrical adaptors which was appreciated. As mentioned on lots of reviews a/c is not great in 4th floor attic rms. We had booked a family room & were really hoping for another floor but you guessed it we got the 4th floor. It was bearable with the supplied fan at 23°c but I'd imagine really difficult in hotter weather. Did day trip to Lucerne which was lovely. Zurich is a beautiful expensive city but if we came again we would ensure hotel choice had good a/c & onsite bar/lobby for evening, even if it meant a slightly higher cost. Life's too short.
We liked everything about the property, the staff, and the surrounding area. It's in a great location. The hotel is in excellent condition and spotless. All the staff were very friendly and helpful. Definitely had a great stay and would certainly book it again when in Zurich.
Lobby too small.
We spent two nights at this hotel, after reading the great reviews here. The location is great, with just a 10-12 minute walk from the train station. The reception person who checked us in the evening we arrived was very helpful! He greeted us every time, was friendly, and very helpful. He helped make our stay pleasant. The reasons why I gave them a lower rating- I had put in a note for a quiet room when making the reservation so they gave us a room on the 4th floor with a slanted, attic like ceiling. Those rooms should have a lower rate and we should have never been put in that room. A quiet room does not mean compromising on room quality. As the room is tiny, we had to watch our heads so we didn't hit it while using our suitcases. We did reach out to the front desk right away, but were told they couldn't make any changes that day. Extremely disappointing! Another negative was the lack of a lounge/lobby area. The check in area gives a tacky, low end feel. We've stayed in other small hotels in Switzerland where there is very little space in the check in area but they have a lounge area incorporated into the breakfast area, which is nice. Since there are no kettles in the rooms, there's a coffee machine and apples available at check in. If I were going again, I would check other hotels available right behind this one, with similar rooms and breakfast, but a much nicer entry and lounge space.
I had a wonderful stay at this hotel! The staff were exceptionally kind, helpful, and always professional. They made me feel very welcome from the moment I arrived. The room was clean and comfortable, and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was warm and inviting. I truly appreciated the excellent service and attention to detail. Highly recommended – I would definitely stay here again!
It's a no frills property but the breakfast is good and the rooms are clean.
