Quiet countryside location, delicious Sri Lankan food and wonderful staff, but overall still a work in progress.
Pros:

The staff were very friendly, helpful, and accommodating. The hotel is tucked away from the motorway in a quiet area. We drove past farms and quaint villages to get there. It’s very close to a Jaguar/Land Rover facility and test track.

Upon arriving, we checked-in and were shown our King room on the ground floor. The room was very large and had a garden view. It was clean, cool and comfortable. The furnishings were nice and simple. (However, there was a motorcycle jacket hanging up in wardrobe, which was strange.)

This being said, the room did not have a king size bed as described on the hotel’s website and Booking.com. It only had a double bed, but it looked like it once contained two doubles. Since I’d requested a king—and had even confirmed the bed size with the hotel and Booking.com before our trip—my husband and I decided to complain and request a room change.

The hotel manager/front desk attendant initially seemed confused when we told him there wasn’t a king size bed in the room. He said our room is called “the king room” so the bed is a king bed. My husband explained why this wasn’t the case and that we’d like a room with two double beds.

The hotel manager/front desk attendant made a few phone calls and then immediately found us a room on the first floor with two double beds. He asked us to go with him to the room before moving our luggage to check whether it would be an acceptable swap. He also asked my husband to show him the difference between a king size bed and a double bed because he’s new to the hospitality industry and didn’t know. We found his request a little strange but agreed, and ultimately we decided to stay in the new room.

The hotel is under new management and is clearly a work in progress. This being said, the staff made our experience there relaxing and enjoyable. All of them openly acknowledged and apologized for their shortcomings and issues with the building.

Cons:

The property is undergoing intensive renovation. In some regards, it’s surprising they’re still accepting bookings given the property’s condition.

In our room, a makeup mirror was falling off the bathroom wall due to poor installation. One of the new wall sockets by the bed was unusable because of poor installation.

The bathroom had recently been renovated, but there was a build up of black mold under the shower door seals. However, the rest of the bathroom and sleeping area was clean.

Four small towels, a small bar of soap, and small bottles of shampoo, conditioner, and body wash were provided. The bathroom also contained plenty of toilet paper, a rubber shower mat, and a floor mat. No hand towels were provided. There was no option for room service, but we didn’t feel like we need it.

The room itself was large and contained an odd assortment of old, shabby furniture and new, mix-matched pieces from somewhere like Dunelm. The bedside lamps had USB ports, which was nice. Although, only one lamp worked owing to the aforementioned issue with the socket. The overhead lights in the room, though, were essentially bare bulbs. They were harsh and too bright. There was a flat screen TV, which we never turned on, and a small tea/coffee area. There wasn’t a phone to call the front desk nor a Do Not Disturb tag for the door.

Our king bed (two doubles pushed together) was comfortable and clean. Four comfortable pillows were provided but only one double duvet, which wasn’t large enough for two people to share. The room was quiet; it also had a blackout curtain.

We stayed during a heatwave. Our room was on the first floor and was hot, but the radiator was also on when we arrived. A medium-size tabletop fan was included in the room, which was a nice touch. Our window could open too.

Other parts of the hotel were also undergoing renovations and repairs. There were unsecured treads on the stairs and hanging wires where light fittings had once been.

Pros:

Location was great, views from the room was very nice. The staff were cheery and helpful, breakfast was good. Rooms were clean and doen up every day.

Cons:

Personal preference but would have liked different pillows, did have a crick in the neck afterwards but thats just me. The bar garden area could do with a cleanup/refresh.

Convenient stay for one night.
Pros:

Room size, location, free parking, friendly staff. Good food at the Pearl restaurant, but overpriced. Lots of work still needed to bring this place in the 21st century. Understands it’s hard in the current economic climate and appreciate the efforts made by the owners to run an independent hotel business.

Cons:

Renovation not completed, no air con, mismatched furniture in rooms and all around, dust over the bed headboard, wall paper coming off the walls, old carpet threading away. One room had the air dryer , the other room did not. Same with small milk tubes for hot drinks. Live insects found under the duvet in one room.

Breakfast was ok, could be better. No fresh fruit, only oat milk available as an alternative. Had a to request pastries several times, they came only part cooked. No special coffees.

I would not class this property as 4 ****

Pros:

If you are looking for a budget friendly hotel this is perfect. I booked last minute and didn't realise I had booked for shared bathroom. The hotel upgraded me free of charge.. The room was clean and had a massive bed and fridge. I had a lovely nights sleep. The breakfast was fresh and hot and the croissants were fabulous.
Staff at all times were lovely. I would definitely book again.

The staff and food were very good and the rooms were spacious with good facilities
Pros:

Location was good for places we wanted to visit. The staff were very friendly and helpful. Any queries were dealt with quickly and efficiently. The breakfast is very generous and freshly made with good selection of choices. We ate in the restaurant each night as it was convenient being out all day but the food was very good and freshly made. The children’s food was very good and fresh. My favourite was the Sri Lankan yellow fish curry it was delicious. We stayed in a family deluxe room which was very spacious. There were complementary drinks and a fridge, good sized tv and beds. There was a bath with a shower over it giving good choice.

Cons:

The property has been recently taken over and is in need of upgrades and renovations. There was no sign for our room door and we didn’t realise that the room wouldn’t get serviced without a sign on the door. However it was serviced when mentioned.

On a passé une bonne soirée
Pros:

La grandeur de la chambre.
L'amabilité, l'efficacité du personnel.
Le service au restaurant.
La nourriture au restaurant, originale et délicieuse.

Cons:

Certaines choses ont besoin d’un rafraîchissement, sols, peinture de la porte anti-feu, le panneau de la douche he pas étanche (il manquait le joint entre le panneau et la baignoire), le robinet du lavabo fatigué.

A friendly hotel, good price in a great location for our time spent hearby.
Pros:

The room was spacious with a very large bed. We had everything we needed considering the price if the property.
The hotel has bar with reasonably priced drinks.
The staff are very friendly and helpful.

Cons:

The hotel has been newly acquired and some renovations are underway although this didn't disturb us.
Further enhancements will also help this venue.

New management need to spend more on upgrading the general standard
Pros:

Staff were very friendly and helpful, unfortunately the breakfast staff had a poor use of English language

Cons:

The rooms were in need of refurbishment. Our room was at the front on a busy road with just a sliding door that opened. There was a heat was and the room was very hot and uncomfortable
