Although the dry season has had very significant rain, that’s expected in the Rain Forest. This lodge is reached by a boat across the river and we strayed in an incredible tree house for 2 (or 3). The restaurant is very good but the tours are exceptional.
We did night tour, morning bird watching tour, river tour and the sugar, chocolate and coffee tour. All were great but the last not to be missed.
Just a wonderful place.
Maquenque is an incredible immersion into Costa Rica’s wildlife. This was further enriched by the excellent staff and tours. We saw plenty of birds, frogs, plants, monkeys and more with the wonderful Antonio. A highlight was a tour of the farm with fresh chocolate and coffee.
When booking the lodge, I was not convinced it would live up to the glowing reviews it has. However, I can see why so many people loved to stay here. Everything about the resort was fantastic, however, what really stood out was the customer service and the friendly staff. Everyone we came across, was friendly and eager to help. We saw so many different animals around the resort as well as on the tours. Would we come back again? 100%!
Spent the most amazing 3 nights here for Christmas. Maquenque is an amazing place, so much wildlife, beautiful grounds, delicious food and fantastic tours. As it was Christmas we were spoilt with a special Christmas dinner 4 course menu during which the founder and his son Julio did a really lovely speech and then each lodge/table was gifted with a present of a bag of their own amazing coffee. Breakfast was a highlight of a great selection and eggs/omelettes cooked to order by the lovely Alvaro. We did 5 different tours which were all brilliant, highlights being the Rio San Carlos boat trip and the Safari Float Rafting. All guides were informative and professional, specific shout outs to Luis M, Antonio & Jose.
As it was Christmas we treated ourselves to a treehouse, which was lovely and secluded, immersed us in the rainforest, had everything we needed but was abit unnerving walking to and from in the dark, but we were rewarded one night by an encounter with an amazing Great Tinamou. Will definitely be back one day, next time will try a Bungalow for lagoon views. Maquenque is a place that should be on everyone's must visit list.
We had a wonderful family days here. We spent 2 nights, did the night walk, early morning bird watching , boat excursion and rainforest hike - all were phantasic with very knowledgeable guides.
The food in the restaurant was very good, we had wifi in our bungalows and everything we needed.
Thank you for the wonderful time!
We recently stayed six nights at Maquenque Eco Lodge and every aspect of this wonderful place was fantastic!! A true paradise in the rainforest and a superb choice for nature lovers visiting Costa Rica. Our treehouse was amazing, comfortable and peaceful with visits at eye level from aracaris, spider-monkeys, capuchins, woodpeckers and even a tamandua! The food is absolutely delicious and the dining and common areas are superbly lovely overlooking the lagoon and rainforest with a myriad of birdlife to be observed. The guides are fantastic, passionate and truly knowledgeable and enjoy sharing the wonderful biodiversity of wildlife in this region! Every staff member encountered was personable, kind, passionate and always smiling. Special mention to Keneth, Fransisco, Luis, Luis Leon, Julio, Henry, Christian and others who helped make our stayed phenomenal and full of wonder and delight! The wildlife spotted at Maquenque is outstanding and we were blessed with an incredible diversity of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, butterflies and much more!
We would HIGHLY recommend a stay at Maquenque Eco Lodge and cannot wait to be able to return to this Costa Rican paradise!
Beautiful experience. Great treehouse accommodations. Marco, our guide for two different nature tours, was super friendly and informative.
A fantastic place to stay with wonderful staff. Luis Leon was a great guide and was so enthusiastic! Would love to return one day. As another reviewer said it would be useful to have a reading light but overall great tree house.
It was a great experience to sleep in a treehouse. The excursions were great. We really enjoyed Louis Leon. All were very helpful and kind. The lady at the excursions helped us very good with our phone. Thank you for the nice experience.
We stayed one night in a tree lodge, quite an experience! First you unload your luggage and park your car. Than you cross the river by boat and have a decent walk to the reception. Than a further walk to your accommodation after you have been given a walky talky and a flashlight. The steps to the tree lodge are easy and luggage is transported into the cabin by the staff. The cabin is luxury and has a shower with nature views. The only shortcoming was the lack of a reading light. Breakfast is excellent with a view on many birdwatchers and the birds themselves. Also good for lunch and dinner but rather expensive (and there is no alternative). We did two tours: a nightwalk and the boattrip to the boarder with Nicaragua. Both were excellent due the guide (and captain) with incredible eyes 👀. The road to the lodge is relatively well maintained, some wholes as usual but doable with a normal car.
Nice lodge, great staff. We had a bungalow which was very pleasant. We drove to the lodge and access was straight forward
Recently spent three nights in a fabulous treehouse at this Eco Lodge. We throughly enjoyed our entire stay.
The food was reasonably priced and very well prepared. The treehouse accommodation was truly one of a kind and very comfortable.
Best of all was the knowledgeable and friendly staff along with the variety of amazing critters we encountered.
Highly recommend the night walk and river rafting tour.
Five out of five stars!
What a wonderful experience staying in a tree house in the middle of the forest amazing. Lovely walk to the tree house listening and encountering all sorts of wildlife .
Lovely dinning room overlooking the lake with all the birds and iguanas
Excellent hotel surrounded by nature. You have to take a canoe from the car park to reach the lodge.
Some rooms are 20 metres up in the trees.
Others are on the edge of a lake and are very comfortable (air conditioning, fan, fridge AND freezer, terrace).
But the best part is the surrounding nature, where you can encounter lots of wild animals!
In short, an excellent hotel to discover, offering a wide range of activities (which are quite expensive).
I highly recommend it.
One area for improvement, however : the evening restaurant is relatively expensive and, above all, the portions are small.
It's a shame that the lunch menu isn't available in the evening.
What a stunning lodge, tucked away in the lush rainforest, with beautiful views of the lagoon from the dining room and our bungalow. Lots of birds to see. Very peaceful, with lovely, friendly staff and good food. We did a boat trip and cocoa and coffee farm tour - all the guides were very knowledgeable and super friendly. Huge storm one night and other rain storms here and there but it’s warm rain! Highly recommend the lodge, didn’t want to leave!
Not the friendliest, very stingy, food not great, waste of money
Very pleasant stay despite the rain that accompanied us. The site is beautiful in absolute calm. Great bird watching in front of the restaurant. Guided tour day and night very well. Luxury perched hut. The smiling and welcoming staff. Special mention to Luis Eduardo at the restaurant who had a great contact with the children. Very nice memory!
A wonderful ecolodge with beautiful trails, pool, kayaks, and excursions.
Booked through Expedia however hotel decided to downgrade the room I booked and couldn’t honour what I had actually reserved - also did not lower the price. They did given an upgrade for 1 night and a free tour but don’t think this compensated enough for the mess they caused. If you use a booking agent to make reservation be sure to double check the accommodation they are giving you. Place is lovely though and I would consider staying again.
Maquenque lodge is stunning. So much to do! We stayed in the tree house which was an amazing experience.
The staff were friendly and helpful, which has been the case since we arrived here in Costa Rica a week ago.
The food and restaurant was good
