Pros:

The building is a nice historical one

Cons:

Avoid This Hotel: A Shocking Downward Spiral

I used to be a regular guest here, but the recent drop in standards is nothing short of appalling. What was once a reliable, welcoming establishment has rapidly deteriorated into a mismanaged, unhygienic, and money-grabbing mess.

The Key Issues:

Non-Existent Nighttime Leadership: The evening shift was run entirely by very young adults whose utter inexperience was on full display. With zero visible management after hours, the staff seemed completely unguided, overwhelmed, and indifferent.

Severe Hygiene & Health Hazards: A customer was sick in the main bar/lobby area, and the mess was left completely untouched for over 30 minutes. You can only imagine the atrocious smell. Leaving biohazardous waste sitting in a high-traffic public space is a massive health and safety risk.

Absurd Dining Hours: Don't count on getting dinner here—the kitchen completely stopped serving food after 7:45 PM. Shutting down food service that early in a hotel is ridiculous.

Appalling Bar Service: The bar abruptly shut down at 8:50 PM with zero warning. No "last call," no courtesy check, and no asking if we wanted a final beverage—just a shutter slammed down while we were actively sitting there trying to enjoy a drink.

Left in Silence: Immediately after the bar shut, the staff killed the background music, leaving us sitting in pitch silence in the only public area available to guests.

Unwarranted Fees: To top it all off, I was slapped with a service charge just for ordering drinks at the bar. Charging an extra fee for someone to simply hand you a beverage—while offering such bottom-tier service—is absolute madness.

Tone-Deaf Management: Whenever you try to raise these glaring issues, management somehow tries to spin your comments to extract a fake "positive" rather than actually addressing the clear, fundamental problems at hand.

The Verdict: Save your money and book anywhere else.

Beautiful hotel poor service
Pros:

The spa was great. The staff in the spa were attentive and friendly. The hotel itself is beautiful and in beautiful surroundings. It is very clean and the room was immaculate

Cons:

We weren't informed on arrival of basically anything. After we'd had a nice relaxing spa we were planning on having a meal and a few drinks however we were informed that the restaurant was closing at 20.00 and so was the bar!! As it was already turned 18.30 by then it would have been too late by the time we got changed so we had to make arrangements to go elsewhere. We asked at the reception where the nearest place for food and drink was and were told it was 4 minutes away......by car! In reality it was a 20 minute uphill walk. When we got back to the hotel it turns out there were two events on. One was upstairs and reasonably quiet the other was an Indian music festival which to say was loud is an understatement so sleep was pretty much out of the question until the event finished. If we had been informed of this on arrival we would have either gone somewhere else or at least been a tad more prepared. We phoned reception in the night to complain about the noise and was told they would leave it in the handover for the morning shift. When we came to book out nothing was mentioned so we raised the issue again but the lady who although friendly didn't seem to be able to help in any way and said it was a separate company who deal with that part of the hotel. There also seemed to be a shortage of staff at breakfast and when food ran out you had to go and find someone to let them know. No one was checking the hot plates to see what was needed. I have to say that when I got back from our meal I was "allowed"to buy 3 bottles of beer to take to our room.
It was meant to be a relaxing birthday treat but unfortunately it wasn't to be. I really don't like leaving negative reviews but in this case I felt I had to

Lovely room but a few maintenance issues.
Pros:

Nice big, well equipped air conditioned room with comfortable bed, quiet environment, good tv, mini fridge etc and very good bathroom.

Cons:

A couple of maintenance issues, including rainfall shower barely working, sink plug broken, wall mounted shaving mirror missing but replaced by portable mirror stand. Not a big deal, but a hotel of this quality really must keep on top of basic maintenance.
The other thing that was not great was too few tea/coffee/milk supplies. With a fridge in the room it would be nice to have a small carton of milk as they do in other good hotels.

I may be the only disgruntled customer but I will not be returning.
Pros:

The old good thing about my stay was the breakfast, it lived up to the standard I know and expect from Stanley house.

Cons:

On checking staff, staff not friendly and quick to point out this was booked through booking.com ( I don't understand why this would matter because either way it was not free, it was a paid for stay) I have stayed at Stanley house a few times booked directly on the website and can confirm the staff treated us differently this time around. The manor house building was not clean (from the entrance) and the room had a damp smell. I got back home with an itchy rash that could be from bed bugs. The thermal pool wasn't working (the buttons) and the thermal experience felt hurried, staff inpatient.
