We had a wonderful stay at Hotel Kanra Kyoto and would happily stay there again. The staff were consistently professional, responsive, and kind, which set a welcoming tone from the moment we arrived.
Our room was peaceful and tranquil, beautifully appointed, and had an incredible view overlooking the Higashi Honganji Temple complex. The beds were very comfortable, and the room felt like a calm retreat after long days of sightseeing. One of the highlights was the large private wooden soaking tub, which felt wonderfully luxurious. The shower and bathroom facilities overall were excellent and thoughtfully designed.
We also used the hotel’s laundry service twice and had very positive results both times. It was convenient and efficient, though it’s worth noting that laundry service is not available on weekends or holidays, so plan accordingly.
The location was also very convenient for sightseeing. We were able to walk to a number of sites and restaurants, which made exploring Kyoto easy and enjoyable.
My husband especially enjoyed the breakfast buffet and found it to be a great start to the day.
For travelers who are gluten free, we highly recommend Kappa Italian for lunch or dinner. It’s about a 12-minute walk from the hotel and every meal we had there was excellent. We also recommend Waco Crepes, Loco Chicken, and Uno Ramen. Those locations are a bit farther away, so we took taxis, but they were well worth the trip.
As mentioned in the pros, my husband enjoyed the breakfast buffet. However, as someone who cannot eat gluten, my experience was quite different. Prior to our trip, I communicated with the hotel and was assured that gluten-free breakfast would “not be a problem.” Unfortunately, in practice this meant a gluten-free rice bread roll, scrambled eggs, some fruit, and very little else.
For example, there were five salad dressings available and every one of them contained wheat or gluten. Since I don’t enjoy plain lettuce, that meant the salad was not really an option. The tamagoyaki contained wheat, as did all of the sushi and the hash browns. In the end, there simply were not enough gluten-free choices to justify either the price of the buffet or even the trip downstairs each morning. The dining area is also kept quite warm, which made the experience less comfortable.
I would have appreciated more transparency in advance about how few of the buffet offerings were actually gluten free so that I could have planned breakfast elsewhere.
The one other opportunity for improvement—certainly not a deal breaker, but something that would have been nice—is the television setup. In several other hotels during our trip, the TVs were smart TVs that allowed us to log into our Netflix or Prime accounts. While the offerings change depending on the country, it was still nice to have access to familiar shows or movies. At Hotel Kanra Kyoto, the rooms instead offer a Fire Stick, which requires a Japanese Amazon account to use. Since we did not have one, the TV options were unfortunately not useful for us.
Super nice and clean hotel with exceptional staff
The ambience and calm
Breakfast was expensive
I’ve never received great service and courtesy while checking into a hotel. Everyone was super helpful while I was staying there. The location was terrific close to the main station and other sub stations. Great pillows. The soaking tub was terrific in my room.
There’s really nothing to not like about it. Since you’re asking me what I didn’t like about the property I’ll tell you that I like my bacon crisp beer than they had at the breakfast buffet. Lol.
ロケーションが良い。地下鉄の8番口から直ぐでした。スタッフが親切で京都観光の相談に乗ってくれました。
特にない。
You will not regret booking this hotel. Its one of the few hotels in Kyoto with a view. The cypress bath at the end of each day was a dream. The free coffee in the lobby is actually high quality and the wine and sake selections are also great. Very friendly staff and overall a very nice and luxurious experience.
