I stayed at The Hare and Hounds during a day trip to Tetbury, and it was outstanding in every single department. From the moment we arrived, everything felt effortless and high quality. The location is unreal – perfectly placed for exploring Tetbury and the surrounding countryside, yet peaceful and relaxing. The rooms were immaculate, beautifully decorated, and extremely comfortable, with great attention to detail. Parking was easy and convenient, which is a real bonus in this area.
Breakfast deserves a special mention – absolutely first class. Fresh, well-cooked, and genuinely one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had. The staff were welcoming, professional, and clearly proud of what they offer. After spending the day exploring Tetbury and eating out locally, it was a pleasure to return here. A true 5-star experience – I loved it and would not hesitate to return or recommend it.
Booked Christmas Day Lunch. (£125 pp)
Very disappointed. Hotel had little festive atmosphere and the luncheon was, at best, mediocre. The main meal, I had the Turkey and trimmings, was poorly presented with the Turkey not having been carved from a joint but 3 or 4 triangular pieces of meat of dubious origin.
I complained to the server but received no response or apology.
Not value for money
What a Beautifull weekend & location for my daughter’s wedding! Fantastic location great staff & lovely food, the weekend couldn’t have been better & we had so
Much positive feedback from friends & family . Big thanks to Mia who coordinated the day & a special mention to Jenna who braved the rain with out drinks for the last photos! What a star. Will certainly be back to the Hare & Hounds !
We had the most fabulous stay here this week. Our group of 3 couples we’d never been here before but it surpassed our expectations. Lunch in the bar was fabulous with the food quality being fantastic. The fish platter, steak sandwiches and BLT sandwiches were lovely. Our room was spacious and homely. Our room rate came with a complimentary glass of Laurent Perrier pre dinner as well as a credit towards our dinner bill. Dinner was excellent. Breakfast was also so good. Really good choices. The staff here are absolutely delightful. They go above and beyond to meet diner requirements. We will definitely be back.
Professional service in Jack Hares bar and when I checked in.
Bedroom was spotless ,warm and inviting ,even had a bottle of fresh milk .
Thank you a lovely hotel .
We recently stayed here for one night and couldn't fault anything. A very nice room in the main building. Comfortable bed and lovely bathroom.
We had dinner in the bar which was good, and the service was excellent. Breakfast the next morning was also very good.
A beautiful hotel with exceptional staff. Would stay again.
Stayed here for a weekend to see the autumn colours of Westonbirt Arboretum. Hotel itself is a lovely building, well furnished, clean and tidy in well kept gardens and surroundings Exemplary staff from reception, to bar and dining room and are to be commended especially as we noted with shall we say,. "difficult" patrons.
The downside? It's just way overpriced. Our room (The Mulberry) was ok, clean but dated with lack of facilities for the price. No fridge, no minibar and minimal storage, drawers etc. Have stayed in better for less money.
Evening meal in the beautiful and extremely well managed restaurant was mixed. My wifes chicken was done to perfection, my fillet steak not so. At £43 for an 8 oz. this is the most expensive fillet I've had, overpricing some Michelin restaurants I've eaten in, and also the toughest piece of meat too. Cooked a tad more than the medium well I asked for too. It was a huge disappointment. My commenting on this to the waiter was just that it will be passed on to the chef. My wife commented that it looked like the end piece of the fillet.
Drinks in the bar continued in the same vein. glass of wine for £16 from, after a quick Google, to be found at £17 for the bottle online. Yes, I know there are overheads but...
A nice enough weekend but doubt I'll be back. The prices don't match the experience.
Very stylish, comfortable hotel with excellent restaurant food. Staff in all depts were very good. Understandably, you have to pay for quality.
Visited the hotel last Sunday for a roast . The beef was really well cooked and great quality. The cauliflower cheese was very tiny ( a small spoonful at best). The cost was £26 , which for the quality of food and beautiful surroundings was fair .... but we were left with a sour taste with the drink prices . Over £17 for a glass of wine and then got charged £1.10 on top for a dash of lime in the beer . Service was average . Wouldn't visit again . We try different venues every weekend, and it just wasn't worth the over pricing.
We chose this hotel due to its close proximity to The Gardens at Highgrove.
We were staying in The Magnolia suite which was very large with a private garden and hot tub. The suite was clean, the bed was comfy and we were left a bottle of fizz and chocolates!
We enjoyed a lovely evening meal in the restaurant and breakfast in the morning was good.
All staff were very friendly and the two gents in the restaurant were very attentive.
It was very expensive for a one night stay however as a treat we were happy with what we paid.
Very poor experience. Room large, clean, comfortable bed. Chips in paintwork, mirror, bathroom tiling. Shower really dirty, mildew and mould on walls, tiles and grouting. Nice outside area outside room but dirty, scruffy furniture, not remotely inviting. Dressing table but no light so impossible to see to put makeup on. 1 plus, Dining room very nice but we had a large, noisy party (which are there regularly) which totally ruined our meal. Was nice meal but very expensive for what it was. Lunch in Jacks was disappointing and expensive. Breakfast in morning nice. ALL staff were lovely, friendly and helpful. Lovely welcome.
Really nice hotel, the staff were very accommodating and provided wonderful service. Highly recommend!
Fabulous hotel. Nicely decorated. Everything in perfect condition. Lovely dinner.
Would 100% come back.
We found all of the staff very friendly, knowledgable and attentive to every detail, they would sort something without waiting to be asked Very comfortable dining and the food was excellent.
Wonderful location and very pleasant surroundings.
We had an unfortunate accident one morning with a cut that bled badly the staff were brilliant and had everything sorted wih bandages first aid was on offer and a swift clean up. Could not have asked for more.
The hotel lived up to expectations and the buildings were built of the lovely soft Gloucestershire. It was a shame that the outside seating for the bar like being in a car park and close to the road. The staff were friendly and helpful.
Very nice stay
We visited for the Lazy Sunday lunch and overnight stay. The hotel and bedrooms do not disappoint, but there were a number of little things that did.
Our lunch was booked for 2.30pm and we arrived just after midday. Understandably the rooms weren't ready, but we explained we need to change for lunch and would really appreciate them being prioritised. Our experience with the receptionists though, who could hardly look up from their screens and didn't seem to care less, got us off to a poor start. We were handed tags to put on our bags, which were then left in reception. Despite visiting twice to see if rooms were ready, or even just one, we lunched without being able to change/freshen up. Once our rooms were ready, the bags were still in reception and we carried them up, with said receptionists still stuck to their screens.
The lunch itself was average (and neither did we receive the complimentary glass of wine each that was part of the offer), although it was better than the breakfast the next day which amounted to a really poor buffet offering and very slow service for anything ordered off the menu. I also think it's unacceptable to have breakfast finishing at 9.30am when people are holidaying.
Another word of caution, there are NO taxis available in this part of the world on a Sunday ....... we were stranded in a village a few miles away and had to get a lift back off a kind bar staff member.
On which note, and to finish on a positive, a shout out to Lee and Zak, who were very helpful and professional staff members.
We had great fun, because we were in great company, but the experience could and should have been so much better.
Super convenient for Highgrove Gardens. Staff friendly….especially the young men working behind the bar.
Comfortable single rooms with full facilities and parking for all.
I really wish the hotel would read the reviews on TA and reply - shows a sign of very poor management in my opinion and even care of their guests. It could be such a wonderful place to stay not the average stay we experienced.
Lovely friendly welcome from reception on arrival. Our room was clean and everything worked ok. Felt slightly dated and could do with a repaint? It was ok for our two night stay though.
Ate in the lovely candlelit restaurant (great Rioja wine) lamb/steak all good. Desserts were fine. Not amazing just ok. Ate in the more relaxed bar area and that was also good. Staff in both were exceptional. Great service by all the hardworking young people there.
Breakfast was a little poor in my opinion. Needed more fresh fruit and nuts.
It is very popular with dog owners, which is fine but to allow your dog to sit on dining chairs in the bar area and on on sofas is totally unacceptable in my opinion. So unhygienic and disgusting.
I really think there should be some rules regarding dog owners.
Unfortunately we wouldn't return because of the inconsiderate dog owners.
Such a shame as it was ideal for our visit to Highgrove Gardens. Will stay elsewhere if we visit Highgrove again.
The hotel has so much potential.
I booked up the Hare & Hounds for 2 nights last minute and was pleased they had room to accommodate us with our dog too. The place itself feels really spectacular, and the food was 10/10. We ate in the bar area as we had our dog and the staff where very accommodating and attentive! Our dog got treated to a cooked sausage on the first morning at breakfast which was a really lovely touch, but then she got completely ignored on the second morning and we didn’t get offered the same service, whereas all the other people with dogs got offered the dog breakfast which was rather confusing.
Also the website says that a dog bed and bowl is included with every dog friendly room booking and we didn’t have this either. So I do wonder what the extra £20 per night dog fee charge is really used for. (For reference we have a hypoallergenic dog so there’s no dog hair for the staff to clean) so to pay an extra £40 for this in total I feel is a bit insane.
The other thing that let us down on the trip was how incredibly noisy it was staying in the room we were in. We stayed in Willow which is I imagine part of the dog friendly accommodation rooms, however being on the bottom floor we were woken up both in the night and both mornings by people walking / stomping up and down the stairs and even moving around upstairs in the room above us. It was a 2 up 2 down layout so I would definitely not recommend staying in either of the rooms on the ground level if you want a good nights sleep!
It would be the main thing stopping us from staying again, unless we could get a room on the upper floor.
