The Atwater was one of the original hotels built by the Wrigley Family. The staff was very helpful - The hotel clean and has charm. We had an Accessible Room, I am not sure if it was because of needing to leave room for a wheel chair but the room would have been a lot better had there been a cabinet, dresser or at least a 2nd chair. I do not know: if we were to have gotten a room with a queen bed (a smaller bed) would there have been room for furniture ? As to location, central to town about a block back from the waterfront - we were on the top floor so saw some of the harbor but looking across some rather unattractive roof of another building. There was a mini fridge and ice bucket - surprised no in room coffee service.
Great location, friendly staff
The hotel is nice and situated steps away from the bay. It supposedly reopened a year ago after years of renovation. The customer service is standard, not the best but not the worst. The rooms were smaller than it looked in the pictures but my main complaint is cleanliness. Some of our sheets had stains or dirt on them. The decorative pillows had black stains on it. It’s obvious they aren’t cleaned in between guests. We set those aside and off the beds. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant onsite either. During the day it’s fine since we can dine elsewhere but at night, it gets harder to find snacks once the eateries close.
The common areas on the main floor (reception, seating) were absolutely gorgeous and inviting--so nice that I wanted to spend time there and not just in our private room. The service was exceptional. I appreciated that they move your bags from and to the ferry dock to the hotel (you drop them off in a baggage area just after disembarking) and that they'll take your cell phone and notify you if early check-in is possible (it was). A great stay that exceeded my expectations.
NEARBY:
Good restaurants (pasta, seafood, Mexican) are directly across the street--no need to walk far, which was helpful because we'd just finished a major all-day hike on the Trans-Catalina Trail and we were tired! We also loved visiting the nearby Descanso Beach Club. I expected it to be overpriced and nothing special; instead the drinks were great and reasonably priced and the service was friendly and efficient. They even have large public restrooms nearby for easy changing. Don't miss the Casino, which isn't a casino at all; it's worth the $ to see the old-fashioned theatre, ballroom, and murals.
Minor: no way to make coffee in the room, no microwave for heating food, but I really am not complaining--this was all part of the old-fashioned ambience. (There is a nice bistro cafe downstairs and they had great coffee and bagels. For an hour before the cafe opens, they also serve coffee by the reception desk.) Also minor: wifi slow and not easy to watch movies/TV, but in a way this was a benefit. We read more, and there are games in the reception era.
If I could have changed just one thing, it would be to have in-room coffee.
I liked the location, the room, and the comfiness.
Not ALL the staff is professional regarding in assisting you especially with luggage servicing. The staff when we checked in were on point with their tone and flow. However on the last day, Tuesday morning of checking out we did not leave our luggage for them to service to our ferry because long story short their ethic was not to be trusted after that interaction. Please hire more people with professionalism in a workspace.
We had a lovely birthday celebration at the Hotel Atwater over Spring Break. Our family stayed in the Phillip Knight Suite. It was large and had views of the ocean. The Hotel delivered champagne and chocolates upon our arrival. The staff was very friendly and housekeeping did a great job servicing our room daily. They had a cute cafe you clan purchase coffee and breakfast and the hotel is in the heart of downtown. We will be back!
The amenities were great, it was amazing to get some champagne as a welcome and above all it is so beautiful. Definitely would do it again.
We absolutely adored our stay here. Staff is incredibly friendly & helpful, you can book tours & experiences right from a kiosk in the lobby & you walk out the doors to absolutely everything the island has to offer. The location is perfect, off the Main Street so it’s quiet but right off the action. We enjoyed walking around the island from the hotel. Room was small but well situated & lovely.
We enjoyed it so much & will absolutely be back!!
Very charming hotel. Well maintained and appears to be a historic building. Beautiful entrance and rooms.
The property was very close to all store and restaurant
The only thing that was uncomfortable was the walls where thin I cook hear my neighbors walking in the halls and slams the doors in there room
This historic hotel is in a wonderful location and our room had everything that we needed or wanted (except it does not have a coffee maker in the room). It is designed to fit everything in a compact space. The safe is in a drawer, and as you walk in the room there is a cabinet designed to hang a few items on and that cabinet has a some drawers. It is located right across from the sink near the bathroom door. The large mirror over the sink serves as a divider to separate this area from the sleeping area. The bed was comfortable, but it was difficult to figure out how to work the thermostat so that the room temperature was comfortable, but by the second night, we had it adjusted correctly. Sparkling wine was provided in the refrigerator, a nice way to welcome guests to the island. Clean, comfortable, and ideally located with access to the ferry and well within walking distance to the restaurants, shops, and tourist attractions.
Beautiful clean and spacious room with lots of natural light, a huge bathroom, and comfy beds. The hotel is a really great blend of historic and newly renovated. Everything in Avalon is a short walk away.
A pool and hot tub would be a welcome addition.
The Atwater staff were great and the accommodations were excellent. The room was immaculate and the location was in the middle of everything. We loved everything about our anniversary weekend getaway.
Overall, it is quite nice and comfortable But, we'll be staying elsewhere on our next visit.
We went just before the marathon, which my wife ran. Our boat back to LA was that afternoon. Many people every year must be in a similar situation. Of course, she wanted to take a shower and change clothes after the marahon. But no, the 11:00 check out time is sacred.. No exceptions. She has run 97 marathons all over the world, and many hotels bend over backward to cater to marathon guests. Not the Atwater.
Like in many hotels, in the shower are three squirt bottles. But all look identical. Without glasses, I couldn't even see that there was text for shampoo vs. body wash. With glasses on, it took effort. Tiny font with no contrast. Someone chose these. Someone installed them. Someone refills them. Housekeepers clean. Did no one notice that the three look identical? Are there no feedback loops in the management system? Of course this is super minor, but I wonder what else they are overlooking.
