We stayed for our honeymoon and wanted somewhere that was not too crowded and The Residence delivers that. The “semi-private” beach means that only hotel guests can enjoy the beach. The infinity pool was a great place to relax and sunbathe, the spa facilities were good, the food was enjoyable (perhaps not 5 star quality, but we could always find something that we enjoyed) and the rooms are a good size with all the amenities one could wish for. The staff are incredible - they always have a smile on their faces and will go out of their way to be as helpful as possible. The private pool by the room is lovely if you want extra privacy and the bicycles are a nice touch for getting around the premises. The hotel staff were also kind enough to arrange luggage pickup from our room as we checked out very early and arranged a takeaway breakfast for us which was very thoughtful.
Food quality for breakfast and dinner is okay, but can be repetitive. Desserts are very bad - many had a fridge aftertaste and any chocolate desserts weren’t really chocolate but sugar. You’d expect some high quality chocolate in a 5 star hotel in Africa but that wasn’t the case. The only dessert which was good was their ice cream.
WiFi was touch and go throughout our 10 day stay, but every time I informed the staff, they did their best to help fix it.
The TV didn’t work (only wanted to watch some snippets of the World Cup but this wasn’t possible probably because the TVs channels are dependent on WiFi which wasn’t good. I did again inform the hotel staff and they tried to fix it, but when it didn’t work I just decided not to use the TV (I’m sure if they were informed, they’d have tried again to fix it but it wasn’t important).
The tennis courts are very poor - the surface is very damaged and the quality of rackets and tennis balls is very poor (it would be better if the hotel stopped offering tennis until they sort this out because it was very disappointing to an avid tennis player).
The power cuts were very frequent and although I know the hotel can’t do much about this, it does take away from its 5 star rating alongside all the other technological issues.
I think the hotel capitalised from the fact that it is so remote and there are no shops nearby (apart from a boutique souvenir shop on the premises) and it charges a lot for drinks, snacks and food overall (if you are half board). I’d say the prices were just as or even more expensive than the UK which is quite cheeky. For example, a cocktail might cost 17-20 USD.
This was a truly special stay with a wonderful room, resort, staff and food! Highly recommend especially if wanting to relax.

Everything was on point. The property is beautiful- true 5 star.
The villas are quite spacious, with private pool and so convinient for relaxation.
Above all, they speak my language, the rooms were sparkling clean, towels were snow white and the scent in the room was to die for.

The south side where the hotel is secluded, and there isn’t so much to do.
Also, the fact that you get charged water in the room is weird , esp with their room rates which are on the high side

The staff were so kind, hospitable and attentive. One employee in particular named Mercy went above and beyond to help us locate our delayed baggage from the airport when we were unable to reach the airport staff, which took so much stress out from of vacation. Lastly, the views and this resort are breathtaking! Our experience in Zanzibar was great. A very memorable six days.

Me and my husband spent our honeymoon here and everything was perfect like something straight out of a movie , the staff are so welcoming and helpful and the service was amazing ,no faults food was great , William helped us through out our stay and Joseph and hemed decorated our room so beautifully for us highly recommend
The hotel itself is okay, but far from Top 5 on Zanzibar. It's more buffet food, for mass tourisam, and not high-end service and experiance. It's all inclusive hotel, with nice photos that clickbait.
The room service was Very slow. The cleaning crew didnt come, and when we called for them were very slow. The service is like an old hotel with underpaid employees.
Great place to chill and unwind but nothing to do around the hotel, be prepared to taxi somewhere if you want to look around
Very nice hotel. Staff very helpful and attentive. We had a problem with the safe deposit box, they were there in 5 mins fixing it. Food was very good and lots of variety. Its a bit quiet and nothing nearby to walk around.
We stayed at The Residence for our honeymoon and we couldn't have chosen a better place!
The moment the gates of the resort opened we knew we were going to enjoy our stay. The atmosphere was so tranquil, upon arrival we were greeted with mango smoothies and everything was really chilled out. We were taken to our villa on an electric buggy and our driver took us into our villa and explained everything to us. All the rooms in the villa were amazing - Living area, bathroom, bedroom not to mention the pool area! It was a little piece of heaven! We booked a garden villa and there was so much privacy other than the odd monkey or group of guinea foul passing through.
The villa was spotless, Mariam & Hemed ensured our room was perfect every evening and set up a beautiful honeymoon display on the bed on our last evening too!!
The staff was fantastic! Thank you Fahmi for making the most delicious Mojitos at the beach bar and to all the waiting staff in the Dining Room and Pavillion.
Our package included a meal on the beach and it was just amazing - the setting, the service and the food!!
The location was fantastic with a private beach and jetty. The hotel offered complementary water sports - we went kayaking and it was so peaceful.
There's no words to describe how amazing this hotel is and I hope if you choose to go that you enjoy it as much as we did!
