Another Wonderful Stay
Pros:

It’s difficult to put into words the experience of staying at Mill End.
We have visited several times a year for the last four or five years and we just don’t tire of it.
As soon as I walk through the door I can relax. I know it’s going to be good.
The rooms are immaculate and always well presented. We visit as family and so have experienced many different bedrooms over the years and none have disappointed.
The food is excellent.
A breakfast that will see you through the day and an evening meal we all look forward to with anticipation .
Stand outs this time were a fabulous cod dish with truffled potato gnocchi, roast loin of venison and chicken with mushroom orzo pasta.
The wine list is also interesting and great value.
Walks into Chagford or to Fingle Bridge are on your doorstep and great fun.
But as many others have commented, it is the staff at Mill End that set the place apart.
Professional, friendly but above all genuine. They have a pride in what they do and work hard to make each visit a special one.
Thoroughly recommended.

Mill End Hotel - an enjoyable experience
Pros:

My wife and I have now had at least 5 breaks at Mill End Hotel and keep returning because of the high standard of the accommodation and dining, and the friendly, helpful and welcoming service we always receive. We strongly recommend it if you’re looking for a nice break and want to treat yourselves to a touch of luxury.

A pretty good place to stay.
Pros:

The Mill End Hotel, Chagford.

The hotel is in the Teign River valley immediately next to the A382, and just out of the village of Chagford, in Dartmoor. It was easy to find and well signposted. There is a gravel car park which seemed to be full at nearly all times, but we managed to park.

Service: all of the staff were friendly and willing to help. Our check-in and our subsequent cream tea were handled in a friendly and efficient manner, and when a fairly cold ‘hot chocolate’ was delivered, it was quickly remedied. The cream tea was good though - two warm very crumbly plain scones each. Nice jam and clotted cream. At dinner the service was good, however we were a little disappointed that there was no pepper and salt on the table, and that the serving staff did not offer to refill our wine glasses (surely a route to an upsell..) as a matter of course at such a relatively expensive hotel. Service at breakfast was good, and the menu choices were extensive.

The accommodation: our room was at the top of the original main building of the hotel. It was reached via several flights of stairs and two fire doors. The general decor of the hotel was in good order, but the stair carpet at the very top was worn through, and could present a safety issue in the near future. The room was very hot, even with the fitted radiators turned off. We used the room with a small window open all the time. Good views from our east-facing room. The main road (A382) is about 50m away from our room, but it’s a reasonably quiet road. Both the room and the bathroom were spotlessly clean and in good condition. For some reason though there were four large cushions on the bed, and four cushions on the windowsill. These were put into the slim cupboard in the room for the duration of our stay. Ideally there would have been a chair for each of us, but there was only a pouffe which fitted under the dressing table. Everything in the room and bathroom worked, but the sink water pressure was a little low during the day; very low at night.

Food and drink: the menu changed daily. The food and drink were well presented, but the meat courses were overcooked. Dinner was three courses, and opened with an amuse-bouche; dessert was preceded by a palate cleansing small dish. The food was varied and interesting. See my attached photos for examples.

Overall and nice place top stay, but in our opinion other hotels on Dartmoor represent better value for money.

It’s everything everyone says it is - and more!
Pros:

We have just enjoyed a two night stay at this hotel. We walked along the river trail and up to Castle Drogo - well worth a visit. We also found time to visit Chagford and found the old hardware shop beside the Coop - it’s set over three floors and a fascinating place set in a different era, you might just find something in there you didn’t know you needed……….
Thoughts on the hotel, all the great reviews say it all really, just a fabulous country hotel great at being great. The layout, decor, and atmosphere speak to relaxation. Our room was spacious, well equipped and spotless. The unseen house keeping team do a great job so a thankyou to them from us.
But what elevates this hotel to any comparable hotel we have stayed are the staff and the food. All the staff we encountered were delightful and clearly enjoy making the guests feel welcome. Breakfasts were cooked to order with a nice variety to choose from, if you like porridge, smoked haddock or kippers for breakfast (we really do) then you are in for a treat. Evening meal times are cleverly staggered at 15 minute intervals so the kitchen brigade can prepare the courses with care and attention, which is obvious when the food arrives at your table. If it means you don’t get precisely the time you planned, it’s worth the wait, a pre-dinner drink in the lounge is a great start to the evening. The menu changes each evening and over three courses you will also enjoy an amuse bouche and a palate cleanser. The wine list has a good range on offer at great value. We thought everything about this hotel was terrific. We didn’t have a dog with us but it the dog friendly arrangements are well thought through, as is the boot and coat room. We will be back again.

An absolute gem!!
Pros:

This Hotel is an absolute gem in a wonderful rural location. Everything was perfect for our two night stay in the West Okement junior suite. We ate in the restaurant both nights and found the food to be of excellent quality and very reasonably priced. Breakfast was also top notch with loads of choice. Despite being dog friendly (we do not have a dog) the hotel was spotless. The staff were unbelievably friendly and polite and nothing was too much trouble. The location is perfect for walking breaks all of which can be started and ended at the hotel gate! We didn't want to leave and will be returning. Thankyou!

Great stay
Pros:

Just home from a really excellent 3-night stay with friends. We stayed in the Teign room which was very well appointed, extremely comfortable & has a balcony. The food was outstanding and the staff friendly, helpful & efficient. Ideally situated for exploring the surrounding area & Devon generally. It's right next to the river & has ample car parking with an electric charging point.
This was our first stay here but we are already reviewing our diary for a future visit..

Beautiful quiet gem on the edge of Dartmoor.
Pros:

Ideally situated in a beautiful valley alongside the river Teign. Mill End is a dog friendly hotel with a 2AARosette award winning restaurant. Our room was accessible, spacious and with its own deck area overlooking the river. The only noise is from the stream which fed the water mill. The staff are very welcoming and nothing is too much trouble without being over the top.
The food is exquisite and we will definitely go back ….hooefully more than once.

Can’t wait to return
Pros:

Ruffles and I had another superb break at Mill End. Food super once again, thank you.
The weather stayed dry and we walked the walks, played ball in the hotel field after breakfast and enjoyed one of the ground floor rooms with patio onto the garden. We sit, enjoy the fresh air and a lovely Devon made rum drink from the bar. In between our walks I paint and Ruffles plays ball - such a busy holiday.
Staff were wonderful again, thank you Zoe. Paul, the gardener made a welcome appearance too. We’ll have to go and see the results of all his hard work later in the year - can’t wait.
Thank you everyone once again for making our stay so memorable.

A really peaceful country break with great food and great staff
Pros:

We wanted a quiet break with great food in a lovely location. We found it! After a A very wet and dull start to 2026 which followed a wet dull autumn we needed to get out (with our Labrador) and chill out. After looking around on various websites Mill End looked just right. Lovely staff and warm welcome. Good value and quality food. Obvious attention to cleanliness and detail and lovely quirky building. It is just off the A382 which is quirky but not great to drive. Away from the road it is glorious countryside. After a walk, we enjoyed a fantastic dinner.
The staff were ALL very special. We will be back. PS the sun came out during our stay.

Serendipity for us!
Pros:

Absolutely lovely stay at Mill End, Chagford. The staff were all very friendly and helpful , lovely clean rooms and comfortable relaxing sitting areas. The food was brilliant, amazing cream teas, and the waiter service in the dining room was excellent. My wife and I enjoyed every minute of our two night break here, so much that we have already booked to come again later in the year.
Excellent location and very quiet. Loved it.
My only tiny observation would be to add a couple more reading lamps in the lounge area if at all possible, given all the health and safety rules in todays world. ie wires and tripping hazards etc.

A Christmas Cracker
Pros:

We spent Christmas at Mill End and again for a weekend in January for our 50th anniversary.

Christmas was a delight, from our arrival mid-afternoon on December 24th until our departure on the 27th. The hotel was in full Christmas mode and decorated accordingly. We had our collie (Mollie) in tow. This simply has to be the most dog friendly hotel we have ever encountered. The dogs are spoilt as much as the owners with lovely soft beds in the rooms and boxes of dog treats, tennis balls and dog biscuits. Dog bowls are also provided. The hotel has a special boot room with unlimited towels and washing facilities for your furry friend once they return from muddy walks. Simply fantastic. Dogs are able to dine with their owners at breakfast and dinner in the special dining rooms provided. The hotel general lounge is also dog friendly with log burners for chilly days.

We cannot speak highly enough for the entire team that run this hotel like clockwork. The kitchen under the direction of head chef Martin produce the most amazing dishes for dinner, cooked and presented beautifully to the very highest standards, using local produce. Breakfasts are of a similar level. The table service is top notch with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. Much banter goes on between guest and staff that only adds to the homely effect created.

Housekeeping standards match all of the above again, with immaculate rooms serviced by a lovely team.

Nothing is too much trouble to make your stay memorable.

It is impossible to single out one particular individual so a immense thank you and in no particular order, to

Front of House -
Piotr, Zoe, Julie, Emma, Brady, Teyler, Kaia, Evie, Gary, Finlay, Henry, Nick and Callum
Chefs -
Martin, Jitendra, Jarden, Victor and Helen
Housekeeping -
Anna, Karolina, Kate and Sophie

A special thank you to Emmeline, who hand painted the beautiful bauble that was in the guests' Christmas gift box.

Well done to you all.

Kindest Regards

Patricia, Cliff and Mollie

Mixed bag in beautiful location
Pros:

Our third stay in this beautiful location on the River Teign. The hotel is immaculate and absolutely spotless. Brisk efficient receptionist although we were at odds to understand why we had to choose precise times for breakfast and dinner when the hotel only had a dozen or so guests. Our room Bovey was quite small, very comfy bed, pretty curtains and a lovely view of the garden. Good selection of hot drinks and kettle etc. but two home made biscuits were quite stale. The shower was weak and took ages to run hot water. The sitting room, whilst considerably improved with new sofas and upholstery etc. is somewhat dark and there are no reading lights. Very nice log burner. This panelled room needs some fresh flowers, candles etc. to make it more welcoming. Dinner was a mixed bag. Food is beautifully presented but gimmicky. I would rather have a nice selection of vegetables for example than a rather odd extra course of red cabbage sorbet. My husband's salmon starter had absolutely no texture and without biscuits or crackers was quite difficult to eat. A main of pork three ways was delicious but needed some vegetables to "lift" it. Rather disappointing sticky toffee pud which had been in microwave for too long I imagine.. dry and crusty on the edges. Breakfast was very nice with a lovely choice. Immaculate hotel which needs to concentrate on the simple things, ie making sure that white wine is adequately chilled and biscuits in the room are really fresh. A nice experience but not wow when it really could be! We actually found it quite difficult to relax however, the efficiency sort of dilutes the ability to switch off here. I am sure that other people think very differently so my advice would be go for a couple of nights in this spectacular location.

Sublime Retreat Time
Pros:

Thank you Mill End team for yet another sublime stay. We always look forward to our weekends with you (as does Luna and the doggy treats on offer). The team are all friendly and very supportive, nothing is too much trouble. The kitchen team continue to deliver thoughtful local, seasonal menu's that are out of this world in terms of flavour combination an quality. It's always the place we want to be to relax and we feel that as soon as we turn off the A30 to come to you. We look forward to seeing you again later in the year. Keep up the fantastic work that you do.

Wonderfully comfy small hotel with great food and staff in beautiful surroundings.
Pros:

We have stayed here on many occasions. The hotel maintains very high standards and it is in a beautiful and convenient location. Take your walking boots. Chef Will produces top notch food with a changing menu each evening. The wine list is interesting and reasonably priced. The lounge has recently been refurbished and is charming. A cosy spot in front of the log burner for an afternoon cuppa or pre dinner drinks. All the staff are lovely being efficient, friendly and helpful. Piotr or Zoe run things seamlessly and can cover the dinner service with the help of just one other person. Beds are very comfy and there is a great choice at breakfast.
We hope it continues just as it is for many years to come. Thank you.
