York House Hotel

Room was a bit warm. One window was difficult to open.

I am in two minds about this hotel. We were there for a wedding and, the wedding was lovely. Food from the neighbouring restaurant was super tasty, however the bar in the hotel was extortionate for location, ill equip with nothing on tap

The hotel is clearly housing the homeless which, though this is great for them, it isn’t advertised anyway which resulted in a few awkward encounters and, as three young women the night before the wedding, it felt really uncomfortable with people constantly walking around. I feel this should be stated on booking

Our room had a TERRIBLE smell. A mix of sewage and smoke which clung.

Reception staff were almost nonexistent. You had to ring a bell to get attention then wait a while for that. They’re clearly using the staff from the restaurant next door for the hotel. We weren’t told check in or check out times and we’re just handed a key with no information on our stay.

The hotel is exceptionally dated. Though it has character it is very worn.

The beds were comfortable, the rooms bright but besides that, the hotel needs some TLC and improvement.

If I hadn’t been there for a function I would have likely checked out earlier

Did not feel particularly safe in the locale at night. The front entrance, which is reasonably lit is not in use, instead the side entrance, which is not so well lit is the one that has to be used

Clean, comfortable though quite small room. Basic. But well priced. Delivered what it says on the website in!

There was no hand wash in the bathroom.

Nothing "not to like", exactly what we needed.

It should have softer lights, like bedside lamps

Bed was uncomfortable,

Extra pillows in the room would've been a nice option
Slightly noisy road by the hotel but not the hotel's fault

My wife is a bad sleeper and therefore I asked specifically for a quiet room when booking, When we arrived I checked the request but we then found we had been allocated a noisy room at the front of the hotel overlooking a busy through road in Wakefield. I went down and asked for a room away from the road but the receptionist said the hotel was already fully booked. We therefore had to find a different hotel. On our way out, we asked for a refund and only then did the receptionist say that he did have a room at the back, but by then we had already committed to another hotel. All subsequent attempts to get a refund have been rebuffed.

The hotel does not apparently serve any breakfast, which is unusual and I did not appreciate receiving several attempted scam emails in the name of this hotel in the weeks before our visit. Fortunately I was able to check with the hotel and delete the emails but there seem to be deficiencies in their system security.
