Just returned from a 3 night break away with a group of friends for a bridge break. The hotel is stunning, set in beautiful grounds. We had dinner on each evening, and the food is wonderful. There are lovely choices and all to a very high standard. All the staff are friendly and very helpful. Plenty of parking on site and just a short walk into the centre of Keswick. We had such a great time, we are returning in July.
This is an amazing hotel. We had a warm welcome and there was plenty of space to chill out.
The bar area was good and the staff were lovely. All the staff in this hotel are a credit to the owners.
We had a 2 night dinner b&b deal which was value for money as the food in the restaurant was delicious.
Location is good for walks and town and the grounds were nice too.
We would happily stay here again when visiting Keswick and we hope it’s soon.
An absolute pleasure to spend our Christmas Party here. Fabulous food and a good choice for all tastes. All the staff were helpful. The music was excellent and I danced the night away. Complements to the chefs. Well done for the entertainment. A special thanks to the very helpful waiters and waitresses. They did your hotel proud. We will book next Christmas now!!
Lovely historical hotel and lovely and attentive staff. Can’t fault it to be honest. You get what you pay for although the staff make the experience, so management please pay heed. Your staff are your strength and they have been fantastic👍
Fantastic hotel in a great location, the food and service were really good, we can highly recommend and would definitely return.
I have just returned from one of the hotels Christmas events. I had a wonderful time and the quality of food was wonderful. Above all else it was clear that the staff were doing there utmost to make our Christmas experience memorable. A special mention to our waitress Tamena who, although young, looked after us as if she had been years in the business. Service with a smile from all the staff and congratulations to the chef.
Our annual 4 night stay incorporating the early Christmas celebrations. Weather not great but excellent stay in an excellent hotel with comfortable accommodation, efficient pleasant staff and very good food. We have stayed here many times and have never been disappointed. This stay was no exception, rounded off with the party on the last night. Despite the weather we ventured out for walks direct from the hotel which is ideally situated for a wide range of walks.
The hotel looks lovely from the outside and inside the foyer - lovely Christmas decorations! Staff could be a bit friendlier/welcoming but nothing major. The parking is good!
The room and hotel is very dated but we have found this to be the standard in Keswick typically. Very old style shower and mould on the walls as no ventilation. A nice view from the room though and a comfy bed 😊
The hotel is a short walk from Keswick town centre with ample parking outside. The staff are friendly and professional. The hotel was clean and warm although it was dated and would benefit from a thorough revamp. The room we had was clean and warm which was welcome as temperatures dropped dramatically during our stay. We were on a Travelzoo deal ~ £299 for 2 nights for 2 with Dinner B&B on the first night, and B&B on the second night with a free bottle of wine and a packed lunch. The packed lunch was very good and used on the second day on our walk to Threlkeld.
The food was excellent and the service in the restaurant first class.
We were a group of five couples spending a couple of nights at the Keswick Country House Hotel for a university reunion. It proved to be the perfect venue.
From checking in at reception and throughout the stay all the staff that we met were friendly and helpful. Our rooms were spacious and well equipped, with views over the fells. The bar areas are spacious and beautifully decorated in a way that is sympathetic to the Victorian building. The quality of the food was a real surprise; a varied menu of a quality more in keeping with a fine dining restaurant than a 3 star hotel.
Only the Lake District weather was disappointing, but it won’t stop us planning our return.
We went to the Keswick Country House Hotel for two days commencing Friday 14th November 2025. I booked the place in September and paid (if I remember correctly) £416 for the two nights with breakfast and evening meal. I’m one of these people that think I’ll get a better quality place if I pay an amount over and above what I would normally do for two nights. Maybe some would call it reasonable or cheap but for me, it was considerably over what I would usually do.
Anyhow, on arrival, we struggled to park anywhere near and ended up on the road leading up to the hotel, for which there is a parking charge. However, panic over on entering reception and they give out an exemption from any charges to place in the car where it can be seen. Check in was straightforward and we were allocated room 111. I can’t recall when but at some point, I was told a choice of “views” from the room and opted for a hill view – so first tip – don’t take this option, we could see the top of the hills above some trees but you inevitably find yourself looking downwards at a rather scruffy yard full of large bins at the rear of the hotel. Not the best view.
Before coming aware of the view though, before even entering the room, you go through some fire doors where we became aware of what I can only describe as “an old folks home stale wee” smell. It wasn’t pleasant and was ever so slightly stronger on entering the room. Admittedly, the smell did seem to diminish as our stay progressed but that could just have been an immunity to it through constant contact. We had a good look around and the bathroom was dotted with mould/mildew, and the corner of the bedroom also had a trace of the same. My first opinion right then was that room wasn’t even worth half of what I had paid for it.
Rather than complain, as some would, we decided it was what it was, we’d have to put up with it and decided to stay put. Frankly, I’m glad we did because the hotel did grow on me and to a degree, even the room did. Best thing, for me, was the restaurant. I thought the food, especially the evening meal, exceptionally good. I’ve already seen one or two bad reports of the buffet style breakfast but to me, it was a damn good start to each day, and I had no issues with it at all. Best thing in there though, were the staff. Shame I only managed to get one name because they were all very good at their jobs, but Matilda was a real credit to the hotel.
The bar was a lovely area, but I found it a little pricey. Having said that, prices are respective of where you’re from and being from Lancashire, where many bars are much cheaper, yes, not just the hotel, but bars in Keswick are dearer than 90 miles south of there. As an example, and for reference, our first drinks were a pint of Poretti and a large white wine, which was (I think) £13.20, which was about £4 more than most pubs local to where we live. To balance that out, I recall one pub in Seahouses, Northumberland charging £16.50 for the same drinks so as I said, it’s respective of where you’re from.
Would I stay there again? On balance, yes, I would, the pictures around the room may scare people off, maybe the prices will too, but all in all, there are far more positives than negatives and, in the end, we had a very good stay. The beds, (by the way) are huge and exceptionally comfortable and it is just a ten minute stroll into town from the hotel. Do bear in mind with this place, it opened in 1869, it's 156 years old at the time of writing - if you don't like rustic quaint old places, it isn't for you.
Upon arrival, I was was little apprehensive because my wife and I were both dressed in jogging bottoms and t-shirts, as we'd just been to the Aqua Sana at Centre Parcs. Generally, I like to make a good first impression but we'd also just eaten fish and chips and my wife's grey curls, looked like something out of The Hair Bear Bunch, so this could have gone either way!
Anyway, we both received a warm welcome from the New Zealander on reception, who was very friendly and helpful and check in, was a pain free experience.
The reception area felt a bit like a scene from the hotel featured in Disney's The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror™ However, to my relief, we were informed that the lift was "out of order" but that we were on the third floor.
Being a proud Yorkshireman, I refused any help with the cases because I knew my wife was capable of carrying them up three flights of stairs! (I'm obviously joking btw!). So we embarked on our Bushtucker Trial, up the winding staircase to our room in the rafters. By the second floor, we both needed a breather. Upon reaching our room on the third floor, we could have both used an inhaler and even Sara Cox would have struggled with that walk!
However, to our delight, our "deluxe room" was airy and spacious. Yes, I know, I really pushed the boat out, but as the expression goes "happy wife, happy life!" :) Actually, I had a "OneKeyCash" token from Hotels.com, but it's the thought that counts!
The bed was comfy enough, although my wife described the pillows as "boulders!" which I felt was a bit unfair. Perhaps a little on the firm side, if you like to wallow in your pillow, like I do. The bathroom was compact, clean and functional, not luxiuous. When the morning broke, we had a lovely view from our window.
Breakfast was buffet style, which I personally prefer and was very good. Choice of tea, coffee and toast etc were customarily served at the table, by a friendly member of staff, as we overlooked the lovely gardens.
So how would I describe the hotel and our experience?
Well, if you like chic, luxiuous and modern, it probably isn't the place for you. It's a little tired in places, like ourselves but has a certain charm and there's an air of nostalgia, about the place. We found the staff friendly and welcoming and enjoyed our stay, so can't really grumble. I've stopped in better and unfortunately, I've stopped in worse. Don't expect the Ritz but then you're not paying Ritz prices!
Btw, if my wife ever sees this review, I'm in serious trouble!
Stayed here many times excellent yet again, staff very attentive cannot do enough for you.
Restaurant and food very high standard visited with friends had a lovely weekend.
Just got back from another fantastic stay at this amazing place, room and service where faultless, they even went to the trouble of putting a birthday card in the room, thank you , a special thank you to Stephanie and her very professional team, everyone was absolutely A1++ , see you all soon ( only been home a few hours and missing it already) 😥
The room was dated, the bathroom was in need of updating. There was mould on the ceiling. The shower was broken.
All windows had mould on them.
The breakfast was absolutely terrible.
Had a price from Booking.com, £144 but thought we would go in to see if they had availability.
The manager was going to charge us £200 a night.
Some parts of the hotel have been upgraded. The bar was the best place in Hotel with a modern feel. And also the price of the drinks were very reasonable on the plus side.
We definitely would not be staying here again.
If you want to stay in Keswick there is no better place than The Keswick Country House Hotel Station Rd, Keswick, Cumbria. Within walking distance of two beautiful parks and a ten minute walk to view the shops and restaurants. If it's raining - which it does a lot - it's the Lake District, a stunning selection of lounges and a lovely bar awaits you. Bedrooms a big - biggest bed I have ever seen - clean and well equipped. High point - the staff, warm and friendly. Great walks in the grounds and of course fantastic walks all around. Restaurant has a great breakfast service and meals are catered for in the bar area or the wonderful main restaurant. NB some rooms require updating but our stay was superb.
Have visited this hotel many times and would normally mark as 5 but had a few niggles on this stay, When being checked out by Diana I was not asked if I had enjoyed the stay. Had a G and T in the bar one day, the young lady who made it put in plenty of ice, and a piece of cucumber and a piece of lime and also squeezed lime into the drink - excellent. The next day a young man made the G and he placed a minuscule amount of ice in the glass which he touched with his hands and put in only a piece of lime, not the same standard as the day before. Also is it really acceptable to describe a room as deluxe with windows this size. Food and other staff excellent as always
Excellent location, walkable to Town, also has nice grounds & great parking.
Some bedrooms not as smart as others, but public areas are good.
We've stayed a few times over the years, generally the same staff have remained, which is a good sign for the hotel.
The staff are all excellent, it would be a travesty if the new owners didn't keep them all on.
A bit expensive for the type of bedrooms
The external photos of the hotel are lovely. But I found the hotel interiors dark, dated and not a cosy. Dull colours and poor lighting. Our room was nice bit all we looked at was rubbish bins. Curtain linings all torn, bath badly rust stained and very old, dated towel rail. Hall ways tatty and in dire need of a refresh. Breakfast was great tho. Dining room very nice. Expensive stay for one night
Our room was quite large and well appointed. Very friendly and professional staff. We ate both breakfast and dinner in the hotel and every meal was delicious and satisfying.
