A lovely historic hotel in a peaceful village, full of character and charm, with very friendly staff
Pros:

We stayed at Hotel Schloss Gehrden last week and had a wonderful visit. Gehrden itself is a quiet, charming little town set in the beautiful Oberwälder Land nature park, with walking trails visible from the village and a lovely sense of peace and escape.

The hotel is the grande dame of the town and full of character. Its history is fascinating — once a Benedictine convent for nuns and later a palace for Napoleon’s brother Jérôme — and that heritage is reflected beautifully throughout the building. The bedrooms celebrate the hotel’s past, while the public rooms are full of atmosphere, with lovely artwork and interesting objects that make the whole place feel special and distinctive. A special mention needs to go to the shower which had proper water pressure (as opposed to the dribble that comes out of the showers in so many hotels these days!!).

What really made the stay, though, was the warm welcome from the staff, who were friendly and helpful throughout. The neighbouring medieval church of St Peter and Paul is also well worth visiting and adds even more to the sense of history around the hotel.

Overall, Hotel Schloss Gehrden offers excellent value for money and makes a superb base for exploring this beautiful part of North Rhine-Westphalia, whether by car or on foot. Historic places such as Paderborn and Soest are within easy reach. My only small suggestion would be to enhance the in-room welcome tray and extras a little, particularly as the bar was closed for 2 of our 3 nights — but this was a very minor point in what was otherwise a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

I would happily recommend it and would love to return.

Cons:

There was nothing to dislike - one suggestion would be to add a bit more 'in-room' treats (biscuits, mini bar). But the lack of these items did not ruin my stay.

Nicht so wie beworben
Pros:

Das Personal ist sehr freundlich und hilfsbereit. Die Ausstattung der Restaurants und der Bar sind gelungen und ansprechend. Die Bäder sind schön renoviert und alles ist sehr sauber.
Das Restaurant Jerome hat gutes Essen, nur etwas überteuert. Das Buffet ist gut mit kleinen Schwächen.

Cons:

Das Erdgeschoss ist sehr schön gestaltet - demgegenüber fallen die Etagen mit den Hotelzimmern ab. Nicht ordentlich gestrichen, etwas in die Jahre gekommen und die Zimmer bedingt praktisch eingerichtet. Wir fanden die Betten und die Bettwäsche unbequem (das ist wahrscheinlich eine persönliche Sache). Das schlimmste war aber der Stallgeruch (plus Gülle und Silo) vom Bauernhof gegenüber. Da kann das Schloss nichts gegen machen, es ist trotzdem unangenehm und man kann die Fenster nicht lange offen lassen.

Man kann auf die Reinigung des Zimmers verzichten, indem man ein kleines Säckchen an die Tür außen hängt. Für die eingesparte Reinigung bekommt man dann keinen getränkegutschein o.ä., sondern zwei Corny-Riegel. Das war schon etwas befremdlich.

Wir hatten das Schloss ausgesucht, um auch in dem Sternerestaurant zu essen, dessen Werbung bei jedem Besuch der Webseite hochpoppt. Das hat aber leider nur Samstags auf. Die Kommunikation vorab per E-Mail war diesbezüglich auch nicht sehr eindeutig.

Alles in allem hatten wir ein Hotel auf einem anderen Niveau bei dem Preis und den Angaben erwartet. Schade, denn das Hotel hat Charme.

Beautiful building and gardens, friendly staff who were very accommodating.
Unfortunately the restaurant is closed Mon and Tues, as was the bar, but they opened it for us and made us some sandwiches.
Overall, very nice stay.

Cons:

Not the greatest selection at breakfast.
