Stayed here for one night as a business stopover Jan 26. There is limited parking around the rear that costs £9 per day ontop of the hotel fee. When checking in, we enquired about breakfast to be advised that due to a staffing issue, there would be no breakfast in the morning. The receptionist continued to say that we would the breakfast refund via Booking.com. We were only advised of this when we arrived. Had we known, we would have cancelled the booking and gone to another hotel. To summarise, we didn't get breakfast and had to go our first job of the day hungry. To avoid disappointment. Don't book this hotel.
This hotel has some of the most helpful staff we have ever come across. We stayed here for a night as my husband had a very early appointment at a hospital. The Italian lady on reception (sorry didn’t get your name) was SO helpful in giving us directions & sorting out extra time on parking. I even returned after checkout with a query & the 2 ladies on reception were delightful & helpful. The room we had was perfect for what we wanted. Lovely building & excellent location.
Set no more than a 5 minute stroll from the centre of Clifton village, the VSH was ideal for getting to the village and for getting the no 8 bus to Bristol city centre, having a bus stop right outside the hotel.
The hotel was warm and clean and very festive.Receptionist Clara was very welcoming on arrival and went through the check-in process very efficiently. Our room (230) was in the adjacent house and it was what would have been the main reception room for the original house. The room itself was huge with the ensuite built into one corner using false walls. The room was clean and warm with a large couch and large, comfy double bed. The one fault was that the window drapes were below par! They were tatty and didn't close fully, allowing light into the room. We saw the adjoining room and it had a much better finish with long drapes and pelmet, reflecting VSH's four star rating.
Our weekend Receptionist was also very helpful and friendly and we had a lovely chat with her on one of the evenings (apologies for not remembering your name)
Value for money - our stay was probably on a par for room only service at £300 stl for a 3 night stay for a double room. We chose to eat outside the hotel for our meals, including breakfast.
Friendly, helpful staff. Room was clean and functional with everything I needed. On-site parking was a bonus and a very good breakfast (huge sausage!). I'd been disappointed with my stays in other Clifton hotels so was very please to have found this one. I will stay again.
The hotel is very clean and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. We were that happy we booked in on our return journey from Devon. The hotel faces the Victoria Square Garden, with a short walk through the garden you’re into Clifton village. There’s restaurants and shops within walking distance. Also the bus stop is outside the hotel, where the No8 takes you into the city, and the return stop is also outside the hotel. I would recommend staying here !
Clean hotel, comfortable stay, good location for my needs. Shops and pubs within walking distance. Only criticism is the room I had could do with a bit of maintenance care; the light above the bed had a loose bulb, the shower head rail was loose on the wall and the plug didn’t fit the sink.
Excellent location - very friendly and efficient staff. Everything provided in room - would certainly stay again.
Pretty poor overall. Short staffed at breakfast. Long waits for service. Lack of basic breakfast items.
Basic rooms. Wouldn't return.
Great location, clean rooms. Perfect place for our stay
Stayed one night, hotel room was better than expected after reading the reviews. Very clean and comfortable room, and though I agree that the hotel would benefit from an update, it’s a lovely old building in a fantastic location. I slept well and the bed was comfortable.
Downsides: very expensive for what it was (over £200 for one night). Receptionist was chewing gum as she checked us in.
Breakfast was self serve buffet which was very basic and the ‘hot’ element was lukewarm as it was served from tureen with the lids open (?). We got one slice of supermarket bread toast per person. Really poor.
I don’t think I would stay here again unless I got a bargain price!
Lovely traditional hotel in a great location. We would say that anyone with mobility issues may struggle with the flights of stairs in this heritage building. Rooms were spacious with nice views and bathroom was very nice.
We were disappointed and thought this hotel was poor value. The location is good, walking distance from Clifton Village and with a nice green outlook, but the rest is distinctly sub-par. Our room really was basic, small with no easy chair, a tiny shower room with a wonky toilet seat and a doorhandle hanging off. The drawer of one of the bedside tables was unaccountably missing. The lighting was poor and the window blind was ill-fitting. Breakfast had to be pre-ordered the night before and was adequate. The place seemed to be run by very pleasant young women (students? interns?) no sign of any senior management. It all worked 20 years ago so why change things? Not good enough for 2026.
Spacious room with large bathroom.
Close to Clifton village and suspension bridge. Excellent 15 minute bus service to city centre and station. Bus stop right outside hotel.
Absolutely beautiful room!
The staff were friendly and helpful.
Actually there was nothing I didn't like about this hotel! My room was small but perfectly comfortable for a single guest
A pleasant one night stay in Bristol to see the hot air balloon fiesta. Used Tesco club card partner through hotels.com so that softened the price. I wouldn’t have paid £170 to stay for a night, but ballon fiesta is a busy time so guess it’s supply and demand. Staff on reception were very friendly and helpful. Beautiful building with lots of character. Comfortable bedroom. Good hearty breakfast in the morning. Off street parking from check in til 11am for £9 was very good value. Could extend till 13.00 for another £3. Great location for walking up to observatory and Clifton bridge. Would return if price were lower.
Close to everything I needed, good bus link.
Very well kept listed building.
Lovely historic property. Everything spotless and staff very friendly. So convenient for Clifton village.
Everything was good except for breakfast. We had to decide what we wanted to have and the breakfast time on check-in which was a good idea in theory but on 2 of the 3 mornings we were 30 minutes waiting for breakfast and hollandaise on one of the mornings was very strange which was odd since the order was in from 2 days previous.
The waitress was excellent but was under pressure.
