Very helpful staff. The most amazing views from the hotel. Everything in the place seems to have been manicured and architecturally designed. Beautiful!!!
This is a tough one. Let's start with the positives: this is a beautiful location, absolutely unspoiled and lovely. It's an amazing, quiet place with so much possibility. There's a pool, a restaurant and a spa. The rooms on the website look great! But. The reality is a bit more complex - not all bad but just prepare yourself. First thing, if you're banking on the EV charger to work, don't - they couldn't get the thing working for the 2 days we were there. Luckily for us we had enough charge to get to a Tesla charger but I suspect you'd be in trouble if you expected to wake up with a full charge. The room we had was probably quite luxurious in 1990 but in 2025 it had crumbling walls and AC that mostly didn't work. We couldn't keep the window open for security reasons because it was a door that opened to the pool deck. The room itself was comfortable enough though so I can't fault it, and it also had the most exciting shower I've had in a long time; if you were around in the 1990s you might have remembered these crazy multi-spray things. BUT if you get over the dated design, the problematic EV charging and the deteriorating condition of the place it has numerous charms. The first: the wine list! What a wonderful, exciting wine list full of oddities and somewhat ancient bottles, all well priced. Next: the food for dinner (go for the half-board option, you'll thank yourself) was excellent with great if somewhat harried service. The breakfast was OK but nothing special. But the best part was Spello and nearby Assisi. The location is wonderful and worth putting up with all the other weirdness. A sold 3 stars from me. Experienced travelers will overlook the issues and see it for what it is.
The hotel was absolutely wonderful. If you’re reading this, chances are you’re an American who, like me, knew little about Spello, Italy before booking. Trust me—you won’t regret staying here. While we didn’t dine at the on-site restaurant, it offers incredible views. The location is also very convenient—perched at the top of the hill, it rewards you with stunning scenery (and a bit of a workout getting there).
My only small disappointment was that we requested a check-out just one hour later, since our train wasn’t leaving until later in the day, but the staff wasn’t able to accommodate—even when I offered to pay for the extra time. Still, overall, it was a truly lovely stay.
Great hotel, the staff is very helpful. Fantastic view. Arianna at the front desk is the best. She is always in a good mood and very helpful. If you want to experience the "Real" Italy stay here. The restaurant is top notch. Overall they really take care of our groups. We stay here often and never have had a problem.

A lot of potential but disappointing. Our experience was consistent with other recent poor reviews. Would not recommend.
Quite possibly the most beautiful hotel room in the world
I'm so happy to be returning to La Bastiglia with a group of friends, in sweet Spello for the 4th time! La Bastiglia is a fantastic boutique hotel perfectly situated on the top of the medieval hilltop town of Spello. The location offers glorious scenic views all around, it's just a few minutes walk down to the town's historic center, and behid you is endless, serene, green Umbrian hills and valleys. You can't miss the easy walking path along a Roman Acqueduct, through poppies and olive groves as far as you wish, or up to the next town Collepino! Then reward yourself with a dip in Bastiglia's pool. The lobby is everything a 17th century boutique hotel should be, filled with busts and antiques. The front desk staff, Manager Mattia and everyone else have always been so welcoming and kind, and the restaurant's impressive dishes have always been delicious. We have ALWAYS stayed at La Bastiglia and hope to continue each year - it's the perfect Umbrian stop - and not just for the Flower Festival!
Well, the view from terrace is great. And that is all. It is not more than a 2 star hotel...... The hotel is not a new one. You have to walk 13 steps to get to the lobby from the street and carry your luggage. The staff at the reception hardly speaks any English. Aquistic isolation does not exist - you can hear everything what happens in the bathroom in the next room. The faucet of the washing basin in our bathroom was incredible noisy. The warm food at breakfast was served slowly and not in enough quantities (especially when the large groups stayed in the hotel). No private parking - as informed on the website. Either paid garage of public parking for fee. Definately not worth the money you have to pay. The only person who was smiling and working properly and trying to make our stay really nice was Negi, the waitress in the breakfast room.........
L'hotel si trova in una posizione splendida, nella parte alta di Spello e gode di una vista panoramica eccellente. Ho trovato un bellissimo ambiente, stanze spaziose e il personale molto gentile e accogliente. Sono rimasto sorpreso positivamente.
The location is excellent and the staff wonderful. The breakfast is good. Parking is complex.
We had a suite which was HUGE with a spa and fantastic valley views.
Parking on the premises if you got there first.
Ample buffet breakfast.
For such an expensive room there was no ironing board or kettle. Amazing.
‘Boutique hotel’ it may have been in the 80s but the hotel is now in need of a full refurb. We had a large but dingy bedroom with mushroom paint and largely bare walls. Tiny shower with malfunctioning dripping head. No bedside lights (though we were provided on request with lamps from the restaurant). Don’t-steal-me coathangers. The bathroom had badly sited holders for dispensers of a multi-purpose gel, instead of differentiated products.
Although the hotel was fully booked, its restaurant is closed every Wednesday, so we had to put our wet walking boots on again and go out into the rain for dinner.
Hotel is understaffed. Breakfast was quite good: properly served coffee, scrambled eggs, toaster available for bread.
Reported room darkening shades wouldn’t close & toilet running. Wasn’t repaired. Dinner soup was only warm, small portions for costs. Eggs cold every day at breakfast & they aren’t good at replenishing at 9 even tho more guests arriving.
On checking out waited 10 min while reception on phone. Finally got off & paid bill. Didn’t have change wanted me to forget the difference. It’s a cute hotel & nice location. They need to fix things.
The staff was horrible. Food marginal by Italian standards.
Nice place to stay
The views from this hotel are amazing but everything else was a disappointment. We had upgraded to a deluxe room which was actually very basic. A bare room without bedside lamps or even a bedside table. It smelt very strongly of bleach - fortunately we were able to open the door to the terrace to air the room. The bathroom was in need of attention. Toilet flush about to drop off the wall, washbasin wouldn’t drain and excess wiring left in the light fittings. In our opinion this is not a 4 star hotel.
This hotel is built on several levels on one of the highest points of Spello and within the town walls. That means a lot of stairs/steep climbs to get to hotel and within the property itself, so be careful if you have mobility concerns. I don't believe there is an elevator if you need one. The Staff at the front desk are not very attentive or engaging, but everything else about this hotel is very good. The rooms are large, clean and very well equipped. The breakfast staff are great; they work hard to keep the plentiful offerings stocked and the area tidy.
This is only 1 of 2 hotels during my 7 week stay in Europe that beat my expectations! Just walk by this place and you'll want to stay there. I went in April 2023 so prices were low and I went with a room that had a very large shared patio with amazing views! Nobody else was using the patio so that didn't hurt my positive experience. Staff was very nice and a pleasure to see. Breakfast was included was a nice bonus! I had to book on their website (vs booking.com or hotels.com) but got a confirmation number and all worked out.
