We recently returned from staying a week at the Hotel Derby in Grindelwald, Switzerland. We were a group of 44 diehard senior skiers from the USA.
Our hosts, Gunnar and Marion, and their staff, were FANTASTIC! They answered any questions and addressed all inquiries promptly. The hotel is THE place to stay in Grindelwald. It is a very well run property in all aspects. Clean, well maintained rooms, very good food and an excellent location. Although only a few steps from the town center, the area is not at all crowded or noisy.
Aside from the property itself, the biggest plus is its proximity to the two railway lines. The local cog railway and the faster high speed line are immediately outside of the hotel’s front door. Both are electric, so no noise, and run on very convenient schedules. They are a classic example of precise Swiss timing.
Since we have returned home almost every member of our group have asked how soon can we return to the Derby and the Jungfrau region. My answer has been, “not soon enough “!
Perfect location for skiing - very easy access to various slopes via train or bus.
Our room was always kept spotless and very comfortable. The view of the mountains was lovely. Even though we also overlooked the train station, we were not disturbed by any of the trains which are all electric, so very quiet.
The staff were delightful and very helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The management strive really well to create a family atmosphere and it is easy to see why people return year after year.
The food was varied and interesting and very tasty. Breakfast especially was delicious.
We will certainly recommend the hotel to our friends and family, and hopefully will return at some time.
An excellent stay here in early Jan. Good sized room with balcony and nice hot shower. Stayed on half board basis with excellent selection at breakfast and typical swiss cuisine for evening meals. Hotel have a very good a la carte restaurant . Nice bar area and good sized ski room with heated boot warmers. What is one of the hotels best features is its location overlooking the station and close to the main stop in the town which makes it very convenient for getting around. My room overlooked the station and did not notice any noise from the trains.
My wife & I have just had another superb short break at the Derby Hotel. This was our 10th visit which says it all! The Directors, Marion & Gunnar, are excellent hosts & we always enjoy our Eiger view room at the back of the hotel. All of the staff are attentive, friendly & helpful & as soon as the flights are available we will be booking for January 2027.
Staying at Derby Swiss Quality Hotel was a magnificent experience in Grindelwald. The hotel is rich in stories and history, with distinctive Alpine architectural features that are immediately noticeable upon entering. While the interior preserves its historical character, it is well maintained and tastefully refurbished.
The hotel is conveniently located right next to Grindelwald train station and is only about a two-minute walk to the Grindelwald bus station. From there, you can easily access the Jungfrau region or Männlichen via Grindelwald Terminal. Be sure to carry your guest card, which allows a complimentary seven-minute bus ride from Grindelwald to Grindelwald Terminal. First is also easily accessible via the Firstbahn, either by a short two-minute bus ride or a pleasant ten-minute walk.
We were truly grateful that the reception team kindly upgraded us from a Cosy Room to a Comfort Plus Room. The spacious corner room offered views from both sides, including the north-facing mountains and the impressive Wetterhorn, making our stay even more enjoyable. The room was clean, well maintained, and comfortably warm, equipped with three heaters.
Breakfast is included and served from 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. at the resturant next to the reception. Although the selection is not extensive, it is more than sufficient to start the day. Guests can enjoy bacon, eggs, breads, salads, cold dishes, and daily sweets in a spacious dining area. A coffee machine is available in the room, and a water dispenser is conveniently located next to the reception desk. There are also several lounge areas for relaxation—a smaller one on the reception floor and a larger one on the fifth floor, where you can admire the magnificent view of the Eiger.
All staff members, including the reception, housekeeping, and restaurant teams, were polite and courteous. Their genuine hospitality made us feel warmly welcomed and helped us create unforgettable memories of this beautiful country. We were even offered chocolates at checkout and invited to return in the future. My wife and I truly believe this is one of the best accommodation experiences we have ever had around the world.
Beyond terrific experience. Rooms were spacious and beds were incredibly comfortable. Our daughter slept on the pull out sofa, which is usually okay at best; the pull out sofa at Hotel Derby had no uncomfortable springs; it did have a terrific mattress and felt luxurious to sleep in. Breakfast was delicious with abundant variety. Location cannot be beat. The views from the windows were stunning. The balcony was lovely to have lunch at or just step onto. Although the hotel is feet away from the train station, you can't hear the trains, which stop running around 11 pm. We loved the hotel and our time here and HIGHLY recommend it.
We're staying here his week, with friends and family (including a 12 & 17 yrs old). Really impressed with the hotel, starting with location, which is basically on the train station platform at Grindelwald. So about 30 steps from the hotel and you're on the train to take you up to the Kleine Scheidegg area for skiing.
The hotel has an authentic Swiss-look (to English people, anyway!) and it is spotless and very cosy. The rooms are a good size, plenty of storage space - which seems hard to find in some skiing accommodation these days! - and includes very welcome extras in the room like a coffee machine (with coffee pods), hairdryer, toiletries etc. The shower in the bathroom is very powerful and there's large and magnified mirrors, with super lighting for putting on your makeup 😚 The beds are very comfortable. We had fantastic views of the mountain from our room 😍
Food in the hotel is very good for both breakfast and dinner. We're half board. The service staff are extremely accommodating and meal times are very relaxed.
Overall, this is a superb hotel and the staff are the most friendly and helpful that we've had in a long time. This makes a huge difference to our holidays - great choice by me! 🤗
We recently stayed at the Derby Swiss Hotel and absolutely loved it. The entire staff is so wonderful and kind and the hotel is warm and welcoming. Don’t worry about proximity to the train, it’s very quiet and the station is small and quaint. The closeness to the station ended up being such a wonderful bonus for us on our vacation and also arrival and departure. The breakfast at the hotel was so good with lots of choices. I can’t have gluten and had no problem eating their breakfast. We also ate dinner there every night and the food and service was excellent. Thank you to Dominic for always greeting us with a smile and great service and helping with my gluten restrictions. Also to Jaqueline for helping us map out our day. The staff goes the extra mile to make your stay lovely. We loved our room with our gorgeous view and the cow bells in the distance. Thank you so much to Ricardo and Kostas for making our stay so wonderful and being so kind and for helping us navigate the way to the hotel when we got off at the terminal and not the village. You guys are the best! The room upgrade for our anniversary was so special and we are very grateful to all of you.
We have been staying at the fantastic Derby Hotel for our work ski trip every January for well over ten years, indeed two of our group for probably closer to twenty years. In the last two years I have been returning in February with my family as my two daughters learn to ski in Grindelwald.
We are luck enough to have stayed in some amazing hotels over the years and yet despite the apparent lack of glitzy star rating the Derby Hotel remains one of my favourite places on earth. It is difficult to distil quite what makes this place so magical. The location is of course second to none and the staff are superb, many of whom have been there for years. The hotel is so wonderfully timeless with wooden finishes throughout. It really encapsulates that classic Swiss chocolate box feel and is just so authentic. There are of course other hotel options in Grindelwald, but in my opinion none come close to the Derby. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel and will hopefully be staying there for many years to come. Quite simply amazing.
We had a 14 night stay in the Derby. It had been recommended by friends and I can see why. The staff are amazing. Always very helpful. The food was excellent. Nothing was to much trouble. We didn't have a room with a view if the Eiger but the view was still amazing. There was also a viewing balcony so you didn't miss the Eiger. So close to the train station it was ideal and, even though the trains started really early in the morning, they did not disturb us. We had a fantastic time and will be returning. Thank you all very much
Very clean and convenient if travel alone
No AC- dated ! However it was just outside of train station and that is priceless… front desk staff was fantastic!
We had a three night stay at the Derby Swiss hotel in Gridelwald and found the quality and service to be excellent. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was delicious and the views from our room phenomenal! This hotel is ideally situated at the train station, which is so convenient for traveling and exploring the region. You do not hear the noise of the train station at all in the hotel.
We had a comfort Eiger room, which was worth the upgrade. The room itself was spotless and well equipped with a small fridge and coffee pod machine. The balcony was perfect for evening drinks, though we did find it a bit loud as there is a service road that runs in the back of the hotel with trucks driving by during business hours. The only other negative point was that the bath towels were quite threadbare- clean but worn out.
This hotel is rated as a three star since it has no extra amenities or spa, but we did not miss those at all. We thought the price for quality was phenomenal- other hotels we considered were at least double the price and not nearly as charming. While we did not get half-board, we ended up eating dinner here every night and enjoyed the variety of dishes and found them reasonably priced for Switzerland. The breakfast was filling and a great start for a day of hiking, and there is a grocery store across the street for convenient snacks and lunch options for the trails.
Overall, we were thrilled with our choice of hotel and look forward to staying here again when we are next in the region!
The hotel is so close to the station that you'd think the noise will interrupt you. The building is fairly quiet and the staff there is amazing. There is ample seating in the restaurant and you are well taken care off. I'd definitely stay here again.
I absolutely love this hotel, first thing of notice was how close to the train station it is, right on the platform - perfect as I didn't have to carry my luggage through the town. Check-in was really quick and the front desk staff were very friendly.
I requested a high floor and that is what I got - on floor 4 - so I had great views from my balcony - which was station side - but the high room compensated for this. I would often spend a hour or so with my book on the balcony before dinner.
The room was just what I needed, a comfortable bed, hot shower and coffee pod machine. This also doubled as a kettle which I used each morning to fill my flask for the day with the coffee sachets I brought from home.
The food was the best half board hotel I have stayed in. Breakfast was the typical European breakfast of cereals, cold meats, cheese, bread and some hot options - plenty of options to fill up on until late afternoon - but it was with the evening meal they excelled - perfect service, food was lovely - it was like going out for a three course meal every night to your favourite restaurant.
I would 100% come back to this hotel, there was not one single thing to moan about.
Friendly staff. Convienient location.
The staff is wonderful and accommodating! There was a variety at breakfast and the restaurant was very good as well. I would recommend this hotel, beautiful views and right next to the train station!
It is a great place.
Hi, we went to Grindlewald as a couple in our 60s, and stayed at the Hotel Derby, hopefully you will find this review helpful.
Travel:
We booked our holiday (8 days) through a UK travel, agent called TUI. The flights were from Heathrow to Geneva and took approx 90 mins, flying with Swiss Air.
On arrival we made our way by train via Interlaken Ost to Grindlewald. The views on the train journey were spectacular. TUI gave us the train tickets for outward and inward journeys, but also, gave us a 50% discount ticket for all train, bus and gondola rides for the whole month which saved us allot of money.
Hotel Derby is basically 20ff from the station it's,so convenient.
Check in was quick and reception were very helpful and polite. Our room (310) was,on the corner of the hotel, with great views,on the Eiger, we also had the train, station on our side but TBH this wasn't a bad thing. The trains are super quiet and the views beyond were lovely.
The room was spacious with a comfy bed, table and chairs and a sofa. Bathroom was spacious and well equipped,,overall very happy. The cleaners came in each day and kept things tidy.
Food:
Breakfast was the typical European type (meat, cheeses, pasteries ect), but also (bacon, sausages, eggs) for those with different tastes.
We stayed Half board so ourcevening meal was included, this was a god send as everything in Switzerland is mega expensive compared to the UK.
All in all the food was of a good standard, with a few options for starters and main couse each evening.
One issue arose on our 2nd night (Wednesday), my wife had fish, she thought it tasted a little odd so left the majority of it. That evening and following day she was very ill with food poisioning, we only ever eat at the hotel so it couldn't have been picked up elsewhere. The waiting staff afterwards asked why I was eating alone so I told them, they said to tell the Reception desk which I did, but never had an appology from the Management which was disappointing. The incident didn't stop us from travelling aroind although my wife was very poorly.
As we were here for 8 days it was great as a base to travel around. You cannot go wrong when travelling, the trains and buses run like a Swiss watch, and the views everywhere are amazing.
Grindlewald 1st, männlichen are all easy to get to from the town by gondola, but we also bought the bus from the town to Busalp and then walked back which was lovely too.
Hotel is expensive. Just like anything in Swiss. Hotel located right next to train station. Parking was easy. Walkable to everything. Staff was very helpful. Breakfast was great. Many options.
