Everything simply perfect and professional.
A short weekend stay with my daughter: mea maxima culpa. I had a colour PDF scan of my daughter’s ID card with me, as well as photos of both sides of the card, but the physical ID had been left in my wife’s wallet.
We arrived with our dog, luggage, tired from travelling, hoping to spend the few remaining hours of the day in the city. It was clearly just the two of us, obviously related, coming from Croatia, and the situation was plainly harmless. Nevertheless, the young staff politely refused us with a smile: rules are rules. Their explanation was that they needed the physical document so that it could be placed in the scanner and we could be registered.
So we returned to the car and set off on an additional two-hour journey to retrieve the ID card. The dog vomited, night fell, plans had to be changed. When we finally returned, the receptionist simply read the details from the ID card and entered them into the computer for registration — the very same details that were already visible on the scan.
I do wonder whether such rigid enforcement of the rules really applies to every hotel guest and every situation. I doubt it (courteous AI-style responses from young management certainly won’t convince me). It seems more likely that, as elsewhere in the Balkan “Mitteleuropa”, some people are granted a bit of discretion while others are not. Perhaps I’m mistaken, but I doubt it.
In any case, although they were on the right track, they didn’t quite manage to ruin our stay entirely — the rest was fine. I even received a toothbrush and a razor, which I had also forgotten. Otherwise, the rating would have been one star. All in all, as is often the case here, it isn’t bad, but there is still quite a lot of refinement and know-how needed to reach the level of service one experiences in comparable hotels in Western Europe. It will get better.
