Hotel Khuls Shigakogen

- Pretty much zero English from the staff (especially the reception), so we had to rely on translator apps (which at least makes communication possible)
- Ski hire selection was very minimal for standard skis (though to be fair was also relatively cheap) so for my partner who uses skis 140-145cm in length, there was only one slightly broken set of skis in her size available (and we were there in mid-March and it was VERY quiet). I paid to get executive skis which were good but also very expensive.
- Had problems with the sink tap in our room (only one temperature and no on/off control but instead just had a motion-sensor which didn't work very well, so it involved a lot of waving of hands to get tiny bursts of water)
- Sadly the worst thing was the food (and why I have given such a low score). Sadly the breakfasts and dinners here were terrible. The food types they had out were simple but OK (we expected simple because of the price point), however... the atmosphere of the room we were in was like a dungeon (what a pity they didn't use the bar area as the dining room, it was massive and was always empty of customers, and it would have had a much nicer outlook), and the food was consistently cold. We would go down to breakfast 10 mins before the official start-time (when they actually opened) and all of the hot food was already cold. I couldn't work out how they could have such cold food at that point. They did have tiny flames under some hot-food items/trays, but they weren't doing any good at keeping the food hot. It must have all been sitting there for 20-30 mins before we came in to get as cold as it was.

The hotel is okay…but if the owner can invest money to renovate it.. it will be more attractive

Bonus - there is a ski school at the hotel and gear rental shop… ski coaches have Japanese and European…prior booking is needed

Given the current room rate…it reflects the fact

Outdoor onsen & indoor sauna both close at 5pm to save energy cost. Indoor onsen opens until 10pm

The bed … Japanese futons (shikibuton) are traditional, foldable mattresses should be thicker…after sleeping for 1-2 nights…my back start complaining.. I stayed 5 nights…it’s not so comfortable when u sleep and wake up…but after 1-2 hours it’s better

The dinner and breakfast are 90% same for everyday. It’s nice to escape 1-2 nights to try other nice restaurants nearby.

Nothing to fault. We had a great experience from start to finish.
