The location was really good, lovely facade
The room was filthy, when I complained she sent the cleaner up who swept the floor and mopped it with a dirty mop. She didn't clean the toilet I had to do it myself, the shower was disgusting. The staff offered no apology for the state of the room.
The Hotel Santa Elena in El Fuerte is an inexpensive, centrally located option in a lovely, historic building. Just be aware, it’s a very basic option.
LOCATION: Right in the center of town on the main plaza.
ROOM and DECOR: The building itself is historic and handsome, but the rooms are basic. The balcony room I got was small, but clean – though the first night my bedcover was discolored. Unless you sleep the sleep of the dead, I strongly recommend avoiding the rooms with balconies on the square. The main plaza is extremely noisy with traffic and loud music both early and late (prerecorded Christmas music was blasting at 6 am). I've found that hot water all over Mexico requires patience, but I could not get the water in the shower to be more than tepid after running it several minutes.
SERVICE: Helpful. One of the women did my laundry for a tip. A few of the staff speak some English, most don’t.
FOOD: There is a restaurant in the hotel, Mansion de Orrantia, which is quite good.
WIFI: Dodgy. I was be unable to get signal for hours, and then it would come back.
CONCLUSION: The hotel is inexpensive, and for a short stay it’s OK, but I would have been happier paying more for something that came closer to my expectations.
See above regarding noise, lack of hot water and unreliable wifi.
Beautiful, historic and amazing location
Very local to main square, very nice and clean. Close to restaurants.
We arrived in El Fuerte by train from Creel and took a colectivo from the station (60 pesos per person). The hotel itself is quite old but has character. Our room was very spacious with high ceilings, a comfortable bed, and traditional wooden shutters instead of glass windows. Be aware that this means outside noise can easily be heard.
The air conditioning worked well, and there was also a ceiling fan. The shower only had cold water, but given how hot El Fuerte is, this wasn’t really an issue.
The hotel is perfectly located right on the main square, which is very clean and pleasant, with a mix of restaurants, small shops, and street food vendors nearby. I’d also recommend seeing the local Zorro show and taking a short walk to the malecón by the river.
Overall, I would consider staying here again if they improve the standard of cleaning.
On the downside, the room needed a much deeper clean. I found dead bugs under the bed, under the bathroom basin, and behind the shutters, which I mentioned to reception. A water dispenser for guests would also be a welcome addition.
This is an amazing old hotel with 20 ft ceilings and original doors and hardware. The interior courtyard is open to the sky. The location adjacent to the Zocalo is great, but can be noisy at night. Guests should plan on seeing the Zorro show on the other side of the Zocalo.
good location across from main plaza
No water pressure in shower, no WiFi, hornets nest on balcony
