Pros:

Located centrally and within walking distance of the cathedral, cafes, shops and train station.

Cons:

The Merchant house is well located centrally which makes it ideal for staying. The rooms are of a good standard with comfortable beds, a good sized ensuite, some furniture however no where to put clothes apart from a few hangers.
Despite being located across the road from the local night club there is no external noise pollution to the rooms located at the back of the hotel.
Unfortunately there is a lot of internal noise and if you are planning to sleep longer than midnight till 4am without a disturbance it's maybe best to stay somewhere else.
I was woken several times by other guests moving about the hotel due to creeky floors when anyone walked about upstairs, doors slamming in corridors, and noisy guests in the reception area.
A waste pipe was located near the room meant that whenever another guest used the toilet or had a shower/bath you would be woken by the noise.

Finally, a member of staff thought it would be a great idea to hoover at 5:45am, 6am and 7:30am. I understand cleanliness however not an appropriate time to do so.

This however is just my experience and guests located in other rooms will not have had the same experience.

Pros:

The staff were lovely
It was spotlessly clean

I know it's an old building but on the top floor the floorboards were so squeaking that we heard every step in our own room and the room next to us

Pros:

Excellent breakfast and serving staff

The bathroom in our ground floor room was titchy. The small bath didn't hold the bathwater, which I mentioned to the receptionist in the morning

It’s a shame we’ve stayed there on numerous occasions and never had a problem but in sorry to say that this is the last
Pros:

I always request the same room in the courtyard and I have to say this stay was very unpleasant for us. When I arrived I was told my room was booked by someone who always stay

Cons:

The room we was given was on the first floor I struggle with stairs hence I always ask for courtyard. I was then offered another room but was told had to pay extra for which I found to be unbelievable so I wasn’t happy with that
