Bad
Pros:

My day was canceled. Due to overbooking from booking.com but somehow I was still charged and cannot get any customer service from the hotel or booking. I would recommend using a reputable site and a reputable business.

Go see the bridge
Pros:

The hotel was in a good position near the Edmund pettus bridge.

Cons:

They didn’t have towels, wash clothes, I had to buy my own. It was 3 people in my room and only two wash cloths. We let them know exactly how many people. Maybe it’s me but I’m not using the same wash cloth for my body on my face. One room the AC didn’t work. It was almost as tho they weren’t prepared for a large crowd of people. I understand it’s a small place but something should’ve been prepared In advance. Overall, it’s a historical place.

Do not stay here!
Pros:

We had the worst experience at this property!! We were there for a wedding. Upon arrival waited 15-20 with no one at the front desk. They arrived, check us in & we headed to the room. Not even asking if needed help with the bags. Got to the room the keys didn't work. Went back down, still didn't work, 3rd time staff came up, they couldn't get so the man said he would come back with the keys. 30 min later I walked down to find him relaxing on a sofa in a room off from the lobby saying I was coming up soon! Got inside the room to find blood on the curtains & spots on mattress & it was just gross. Toilet paper had barely any on the roll so this was used. Before we left for the wedding I asked for another room. She said nothing available but would make sure. After the wedding I checked again telling her about the blood on curtains, she said she would get our room maybe 1/2 off. We went back to the room & wanted to shower, not one towel not a hand towel, nothing!
The next morning we packed & left at 7am leaving name & phone number asking for the manger to call me. Nothing. Sunday I got charged full price. Call again, leaving a message for manager. Nothing. No call on Monday. Called back Tuesday and left another message ( with an employee again ). I also asked for the regional managers number but she said she didn't know who that would be but would tell manager to call me. Nothing! This is unacceptable!

Very disappointing..
Pros:

The fact that it was historical in location.

Cons:

The hotel was pretty much dated needing a lot of upgrades including cleaning of rooms and property. I didn’t feel safe because we were unable to lock the door to the room. Expressed concern to management but were told maintenance wasn’t available until the next day. Linen wasn’t as clean as I would like it.

I’ve stayed in lots of hotels and this one was probably the worst
Pros:

It was bad First thing, when we checked in I had reservations for a handicap room because me and my wife have disabilities. Our room had a bad leak over the tv which didn’t have a remote I stood at the front desk for about 30 minutes while she looked for a remote, I left my phone on the table underneath the tv to get back to see my phone soaked from the ceiling leaking. While trying to dry my phone with a towel, I went back to the front desk to let them know about the leaking problem. They told me they could change my room but they couldn’t give us another handicap room, then it only got worse. They said it won’t be on the first floor it will be on the third floor and that wasn’t what we needed and reserved and paid for. So accepted it because we had driven 5 hours and we were both in pain and needed to get settled and lay down. Then she told us we were getting a queen bed instead of the king we reserved and paid for After moving our things from room 105 to 305 then we didn’t get a refrigerator to store our drinks and food we had with us, and no microwave to heat our food. After getting some rest our food was no good. Getting ready to shower and go get dinner my wife said baby the shower door handle is hanging off. While she was in the shower I used the bathroom which was on the other side I am a big guy I had difficulty getting in and closing the bathroom door. This is one reason we reserved the handicap room. My wife has lupus and a bad case of virago and in room 305 the floor was not level so she fell against the table underneath the tv luckily she didn’t get hurt.

Cons:

The place is so dark at night someone can get mugged in that first floor hallway, the next morning at breakfast we had to find someone to get us a toaster oven to heat up our bagel. We thought about leaving the st James to go find somewhere else to stay . On Sunday we was going to try the breakfast again they should have been ashamed to put that stuff out there. We decided to pass on that and just check out of there before I got anymore upset. So while talking with the clerk at the desk she said the manager wasn’t in she said she took our notes and would give them to the manager, and someone will contact me on Monday no one never called me

Pros:

I'm sad to see that there is very little love and care of room 312 that I stayed in at this historic hotel. The room was smelly (from smoke, perhaps?) and the HVAC fan never turned off, making it not peaceful. There were multiple holes in the wall, cobwebs and dust on the headboards. The cheap plastic toilet seat was broken. There is only one light source in the room - a lamp by the bedside that was not connected to the light switch near the door. When I asked to be switched to a different room after the first night, I was refused. The public spaces are kept up well enough. But I did not enjoy my stay at all.

Pros:

Lovely property. There's a beautiful courtyard that is surrounded by all the room doors. Spacious balconies for each floor surround the building. The surrounding area is that of a downtown that has fallen into ruin. Lots of empty builds. Not pleasing to look at, but the hotel is a beauty despite a downtown that is long gone I paid a few dollars extra to have a room on the river side. It is so nice to eat my breakfast on the balcony while looking at the historic Edmund Pettis bridge which is a block away. The room doors need a coat of paint, but otherwise the property is beautiful. I would definitely stay here again

Pros:

Limited parking. It looks like it could be a beautiful property - IF - some money was invested in it and the city as a whole. The building connected to it looks to be falling down. Being held up by beams and trusses. Seems like there was one worker per shift, who was hiding. Phones in room didn't work. Worker said it was due to a previous storm. Was not made aware upon check in and also wasn't given internet password. Didn't have any towels in the room upon arrival. Reserved 2 rooms. For one of them, the door wouldn't lock and the other the door wouldn't open. Had to search for a worker, because the phones didn't work in order to call to Front Desk. Worker proceeded to fault me for the key not working by saying I was storing it near a credit card and causing it to lose the program. Breakfast in the morning was the bare minimum and no worker around to approach. The workers, seriously, do not seem to want to be bothered. Selma is in a sad state, considering the history. This trip was to visit my mother's grave for Mother's Day, but this "hotel" depressed me more than that.
