Very friendly service.
We loved the character of the hotel. It was beautiful and clean and very comfortable. The central location was perfect for walking to shops and plenty of places to eat.
My only nitpicky complaint was the shower curtain was overdue to be replaced. I informed the front desk on checkout and they saw to it right away.
It is right on the plaza so in the heart of everything in this very walkable town. It is historic, not a chain, with historic photos that give you a feel for the area and many famous people in the arts and entertainment who have stayed there.
There was noise, expected in the downtown of a city I guess, voices and revving motorcycles and garbage pickup at the wee hours of morning crashing dumpsters. It was advertised as a breakfast buffet and I would call it a continental breakfast - yogurt, bagels, cereal and the ability to make waffles. I was thinking hot things like eggs. Not well stocked - people had to ask for orange juice, napkins and coffee to be refilled, and there were no bowls for the cereal. I saw the bowls stacked up at reception when I was checking out and said "Oh! that's where they are, there are none in the breakfast area" - there was still 90 minutes left for breakfast but no indication they were going to be put there.
Staff was excellent. They are limited by a property in need of updating in most every way.
As a National Historical site, it appears the property has not been updated since the 50’s. Lighting in hallways dim, in room ceiling fan lights garish, bathroom lights dim. Toilets updated, but appears seats were not. Just some real misses, which reflected investment as personnel was truly exceptional.
Location ok on town square.
Room is small, can hardly get around the bed, parking is challenging on side streets. Unloading and loading luggage wasn't easy. No refrigerator in room. High noise level.

Old world charm in perfect central location
Breakfast was fine, but very basic
A beautiful, stately hotel. Love how the hallways are decorated: walls, rugs, furniture. I spend time looking at the old photos each time we visit - which is one night each July on our way down the coast. Staff is friendly and helpful. Bed is comfortable. Shower was strong. Didn't use the TV. I love the old fashioned keys. When I was a little girl in the early 1960s these kinds of hotels c. 1880s through 1920, were common when we took our vacation at the Jersey shore. Now they are hard to find. Major construction on the roof just outside our room on the 3rd floor, but at least it wasn't first thing in the morning.
Wifi was iffy. Kept going in and out. Coffee is terrible. I go across the street to Jitterbean. The bedside clock has plenty of access points for charging phones, etc. but there is only one. I suggest one on each side of the bed.
I think the rooms could be brightened up with wallpaper decor and furniture, similar to the hallways. Not a big thing, but there's a marked difference in the look between the room and the hallway.

Was awakened twice by loud people partying around the perimeter of the building. Furnishings were tired and the bed way too hard.
Great central location. Large. clean and comfortable room.
Very noisy. Laneway at back of hotel was used late at night and early in the morning by hotel restaurant and garbage trucks making it impossible to good sleep. Make sure that you request a room off the laneway.
The only hotel in downtown Arcata.
Concerned about its safety in an earthquake or fire as it is an older building.
It was like an old time apartment in San Francisco, lots of vintage door handles, a clawfoot tub, beautiful wood. Got a quiet king at the back. I didn't want to leave. Will be back.
The breakfast was absurd. No one who can afford to travel wants to eat cheap corn syrup yogurt or crummy industrial pastry. Coffee was drinkable though, and real milk was on offer (but no cereal or granola to eat it with).
