I love the courtyard. The restaurant is always good. The service at the restaurant was great.
Everything! It was amazing! The restaurant is excellent, rooms
Comfortable. The atmosphere is so iconic.
Nothing
We'd stay here again without hesitation. Clean with comfortable beds and includes decent breakfast. Love the ambiance. There's a small gift shop and book nook. Super cute outdoor courtyard with fountain.
Try it!
El Capitan was an oasis in Van Horn. A pleasant overnight stop after a day in Guadalupe Mountains NM and Carlsbad Caverns. Food was great, staff friendly and helpful, beds comfortable, and the shower had great water pressure.
Wonderful atmosphere and decor
Very friendly staff, clean room, and amazing scenery!

The location is fantastic with it being near both the Guadalupe Mountains as well as Carlsbad Caverns. The town is small and quiet, so noise is not an issue. The hotel itself was regal and classy with a southwestern touch, had delicious dinner food, and a more than adequate continental breakfast. Staff were all incredibly friendly and helpful.
Not Applicable for me as I enjoyed everything about my stay, though if guests are looking for some kind of night life, the actual town of Van Horn doesn't really have much, if any at all.
Everything! Very nice rooms, excellent pet accommodations and the restaurant is amazing - both food and wine were fantastic!
The room doors don’t close well and have to be slammed to close all the way. We hated disturbing our neighbors!
The El Capitan in Van Horn, Texas is several steps above the normal hotel stay experience. It is definitely a six out of five star experience. When checking in, guests immediately are transported to a quieter, more friendly time in America when customer service was the rule not the exception. The hotel staff treats everyone as a valued guest.
If Dashiell Hammett were alive, this is where he would write his next novel.
While slightly out of the way from El Paso or San Antonio, the El Capitan is a must stop if you are anywhere near Van Horn, TX
We stayed here on the way from Big Bend to El Paso and otherwise wouldn't have known about the place. It far exceeded expectations. Our room had some character and charm but also had features and conveniences often missing from budget hotels (glassware instead of plastic, a private outdoor patio, bedside lamps with power ports, fridge and microwave in closet so you don't get heat/noise from fridge, a real bathtub with a tiled floor in the bathroom). We expected "continental breakfast" but the breakfast included hot eggs and even fresh berries. The bar has craft beer on draft. The design and furnishings are funky and fun, but genuine. It's a great stopping point but also a really fine roadside hotel.
Nice hotel... lovely courtyard... nice decks off courtyard room... excellent restaurant.
Great architecture and interesting history.
A beautiful hotel. The lobby and the room with the fireplace were welcoming and nice places to sit. We appreciated the coffee in the morning and the breakfast tacos for free in the restaurant. Staff were great and everything was wonderfully maintained and clean. We stayed in a king courtyard room and yes, you can hear the train. However, I liked it and looking out at the intersection.
Such a cool hotel! The design was really neat. Takes you back. Restaurant was fantastic and service was impeccable! We stayed in the courtyard room with a small balcony, we would not stay in that room again due to the train blaring about 4-5 times during the night. The hotel sits on the main train crossing in town. That was annoying, especially since the rooms were higher for the courtyard, HOWEVER, we will stay here again, just wont stay at the front of the hotel, we will stay in the back to block train noise.
What a treat. We decided to give this a hotel a try after many years passing it by. I shouldn’t have waited. What a wonderful, classic historical hotel. The king room was a bit small but the furnishings were superb. The bed and linens were fresh, clean and new. The bathroom was efficient and in perfect condition. The sitting area in the lobby was cozy with comfy chairs and a fireplace. They even had acoustic music entertainment in the early evening. Everything was perfect. The only thing I would recommend is to get the double Queen room as it is far more spacious and its patio is far larger. Please go and have dinner there too! Breakfast is complimentary. No coffee in room but 24 hour service in the lobby.
Historic and beautiful
. Cold and dry Burritos. Restaurant food not good. Dry pot roast. Warm white wine.
