Cons:

It took over 3 hours to get checked in. This was due to the concert from the night before. I know that management was aware. They should have planned better

Pros:

I don’t remember her name but the gal who check us in at the front desk was exceptional. Our room was excellent, clean and comfortable. The hallways were clean and tidy. Breakfast was great with plenty of options for all dietary needs.

Concert Stay
Pros:

We spent a couple of nights here as we came from Illinois to attend the Megan Moroney concert at the arena. For the good news, if you are attending an event at the arena, this is a perfect place as it’s not even a five-minute walk to the arena from the hotel and depending on your room, you can see the arena. You get free breakfast and the dining area is large, and they also have an outdoor patio that includes a grill. As for the room itself, it is good sized and as we recently stayed at a Home2 Suites, this was a better setup as it had a full kitchen, including a stove. The only advantage of the Home2 Suites setup was there a curtain you can use to separate the living room and bedroom if you needed some privacy but other than that, and the mattress was just average at best, we still liked the room. Also, the fitness center was above average for a hotel.

Now for the not so good stuff … parking is a mess here and you must pay a steep price, $33 a day. You need your room key to get in and out of the garage. The setup is weird the garage is across the street. The first level is not attached to the other levels and only has a handful of spots, so getting a spot there is close to impossible. Likely you’ll need to go around a block to the entrance to the other levels. However, even though there are multiple levels, it’s not easy to get a spot here either and as a result people just invent spots and park in any area, including the ramps going into each level, which makes getting around even tricker. We got one of the last spots on the first day (and it was only 3 PM in the afternoon), and on the second day we barely got a spot after circling around, and it was right next to a spot where somebody threw up earlier that day, so it was not good. The only nice feature is that there is a skyway access into the hotel from the garage.

To add insult to injury when we checked out, we tried to leave the garage, but we couldn’t as they deactivated our keys so the gate wouldn’t open. We were lucky as a worker was just driving in and she was nice enough to get out of her car and then she scanned her employee key to use. For the money we paid, we deserve better. They really need to add another floor but since I doubt they will ever do that, at the very least, when the hotel is at a high occupancy rate, allow people to use the other parking garage right across from theirs and then they can pay for it.

Another big issue is that it’s a large hotel with 13 floors but only has two elevators so each time we needed it, there was a wait. Even worse, for the second night one of them stopped working. There is a service elevator, but it was made clear it wasn’t for guest use but in cases like this, they should make an exception.

My daughter loves to hit the pool, but we were disappointed as it was small, even by hotel standards, was only 3 feet in the entire pool and was cold. Also, it didn’t have a hot tub. As a result, she didn’t want to even go the next day, which is very rare for her so that pretty much says it all.

Overall, there were more negatives than positives so if ever back in Grand Rapids, we would go somewhere else.
