Great location; nice rooms; great cafe
It is in a nice location, with proximity to subway lines, trams, and nightlife.
The hotel is extremely run down. There is a strong odor in the hallways and in the room we stayed. Carpets and walls in the hallway and in the room are dirty. There are almost no amenities and no room cleaning. Given the state of disrepair, this feels less like an attempt at being eco-friendly, and more about cutting as many corners as possible. I stayed here two years ago and did not recall the hotel to be in this state. If not for the nonrefundable rate, we would have moved hotel the first night. This hotel has the potential to be really nice, but our stay was disappointing.
Schuhschachtel. Was man aus Tokyo kennt.
great location. very clean and modern
Location
Extra expense for blankets
Shower was excellent. Beautiful area. Amazing coffee and bar.
Not enough storage and lighting was bad
Mustard is a fine hotel but everything is extra - if you feel cold at night you can get a blanket - but you have to pay for it . Its a very pay to play kind of place and the focus on money is annoying.
Blankets when you need them for no fee
The location of the hotel was only a 10-minute walk from the train station. It was located in a quiet residential area.
The local government has been working on beautifying the area and the hotel is located in a green belt walking path with no cars permitted to drive.
Maybe for people from abroad is not a big deal, but for us, Japanese, was: there was no TV in the room. It was specially disappointing because we were not able to watch the World Series Soccer match between Holland and Japan.
The hotel's location is its biggest draw card. The staff were all lovely. The record borrowing system is a bit fun and a novelty, it is also nice to have a record player in your room for the records you buy on your travels around Tokyo, even if the sound is poor quality. The vibe in the "lobby"/cafe on ground floor is fairly nice (although perhaps a bit overhyped in reviews I'm reading), with many visitors coming to enjoy the above average coffee being served. The room was minimal but provided everything I needed whilst travelling on a relative budget. Pyjamas provided was a nice touch. Being able to open the bedroom window on the second floor was also nice in summer. The bike hire system was really good and I was able to hire a good single speed bike for about 1500 yen for a day (around $1O USD) from the hotel and I would recommend this method of exploring Tokyo. Overall my stay was pretty reasonable value.
Whilst it is "clean", the hotel has signs of wear and tear, with some stains on the carpet and many scuffs on the walls and the rooms are very small and tight (Superior double B i stayed in) - okay for one person, potentially claustrophobic for 2. The stark hostel/dormitoryesque hallways and rooms did feel a bit brutalist - not in a good way. The included breakfast consists of a token you can exchange at Sidewalk Coffee Roasters in the lobby on ground floor for your choice of either a bagel with toppings + drink, or a small bowl of granola + drink. Whilst the bagels are pretty good, I would have appreciated a more asian breakfast option (it's hard to escape the obsession with American culture in Tokyo - like no... i don't want a Bagel in Tokyo every morning lol) and imo Eggs are such a vital breakfast item that were missing. The options appeared heavy in gluten and dairy and whilst i didn't ask, not sure if there were alternatives. Having said that, finding somewhere open for breakfast in Tokyo is challenging so it is still probably a good idea to pay for the breakfast! I was just disappointed at the options. Coffee pretty decent though.
