The Marine Hotel

Stairs were a bit daunting as on top floor.

In terms of accessibility, there are a few important things to be aware of before booking a stay at the Marine Hotel.
First, if you have mobility requirements, struggle with narrow stairs, or are travelling with heavy luggage or a pushchair, please bear in mind that both the dining/check-in area and the guest rooms can only be accessed via several flights of stairs and the hotel doesn't have a lift/elevator.

I also found it difficult to find reception, as there wasn't an obvious front desk or signage indoors to direct guests upstairs. The restaurant wasn't open when I arrived, so the ground-floor doors were closed but thankfully, some lovely kitchen staff members spotted me and showed me to the small dining area on the first floor, where I could check in.

My room also used a traditional key rather than a key card, with a separate card needed to activate the light control panel. I struggled to figure out how to turn on the lights because the panel looked like a standard hotel keycard slot, and I'd only been given the one room key. There weren't any instructions in the room guide either, so I had to call the hotel for help. Thankfully, the staff member I spoke to came up almost immediately and kindly talked me through how everything worked, which I really appreciated!

The last two points are more minor and didn't personally affect my stay, but I thought they were worth mentioning for anyone planning a visit... There didn't seem to be a mini-fridge in the room I stayed in, so if you need somewhere to store milk, baby food, medication etc., it may be worth following up with the hotel before booking.

The road outside the hotel is also fairly small, so it's best suited to quick drop-offs and pick-ups. If you're driving down or need parking, I'm not sure how easy it is to find a suitable space nearby, so it might be good to also ask about this when you book.

The water unexpectedly shut off on and off mid-shower. But, it’s an older property so it may just be the plumbing in the building.

I'm trying to think but it was one of those stopovers that you'd like them all to be like.

Our stay at THE MARINE HOTEL was simply awful. Let's start with the lack of customer service (us), as about an hour before our arrival, we messaged them via Booking.com to ask if it was still possible to have dinner at the hotel, given that we were due to arrive at 9:30 PM. We received no response. During check-in, I mentioned the request, and they confirmed they'd read the message and hadn't responded. They told us it was no longer possible to have dinner there. Second point: breakfast was included, but not available. During check-in, we asked for confirmation of breakfast times, and were told it was 9-10 AM. When we asked for assistance, given that we were supposed to leave around 7:30 AM, we were not provided with any assistance. We therefore paid for a service we didn't receive. We will be requesting a refund for this. Third point: the hotel and the room. When booking, the room was described as Deluxe, but there wasn't even a simple luggage rack inside, and there were three electrical sockets in the entire room. Fourth, the bathroom fan didn't work. When I asked for assistance or to change rooms, I was simply told that the hotel had a problem, an electrician had already been contacted, and there was nothing they could do other than apologize. This is quite serious and is related to the lack of customer service said before: they didn't inform us of the problem during check-in, leaving us to figure it out on our own. Furthermore, the bathroom fan was practically never cleaned (see picture). Finally, the hotel is just a collection of rooms above a pub. In fact, to reach the floors, you practically walk beside the pub's kitchen (photo of the stairs between the tomato boxes). A terrible experience, far from a deluxe room. So, at the end we will ask refund for breakfast paid and not avaible due their working hours and for the worst situation in the room.
