I popped into the downstairs restaurant/bar late on a Sunday evening hoping to get something to eat and couldn’t have felt more welcomed into such a friendly and relaxed atmosphere. Whilst it is dated everything was spotlessly clean, the food was excellent and the service couldn’t have been better. Freshly cooked traditional food. 100 X better than the food and service at the much fancier hotel I was staying at across the square.
Very good location, central. In front of the hotel is a tram station with good connection for the central railway station and any other parts of the town. Clean room, clean (shared) bathroom. Good Wi-Fi in the room. In December, there is a big Christmas Market in the square in the front of the hotel. Many restaurants and bars at walking distance.
Pretty cold in the room, especially in the morning. Not working TV (not quite a minus, for me, though). Every morning, at 7:00 you will be awakened by the bells of a church in the immediate vicinity, which ring continuously for about 2-3 minutes. Old furniture. Without an elevator, the hotel is on the 3rd floor, above a restaurant. Quite a lot of noise, produced by the restaurant's employees, until around 00:00. Actually, there is no a reception open 24 hours, check-in and check-out are done in the pizza restaurant from the 1st floor.
I got stuff stolen today there. Wouldn't recommend it, won't go ever again.
for 65 CHF a night, no breakfast, this is not an obvious choice.
I am pissed for the stealing. and I still need thp o type more characters.
The staff were really friendly in this place. It is a beautiful old building in the heart of a historic part of the city. Some facilities are shared with other guests but everything was clean and the room was comfortable. The bar/restaurant under the hotel was a good place to people watch and the food was great. The hotel can't be blamed for the terrifying Swiss thunder storm which raged through the night! So, all in all, a great place to stay.
First of all the room was very hot, like crazy hot and it stank. It was due to high temperature outside as well as lots of refrigerators which were placed on the staircase and produced a lot of heat. The second thing was a heat exchanger also situated on the staircase from a cold room. So imagine how hot it was! Also 4 or 5 fridges on the staircase caused a real danger and inconvenience, because it was very hard and danger to walk between them. So no, it is not a hotel, it’s not even a guest house. It is a restaurant with a few rooms placed above kitchen and staff rooms. Where the smell came from? From the restaurant of course and I don’t mean nice smell of food. No it was the kitchen and waste smell. This place should be closed.
Location: 12 minutes walk from Basel SBB and 20 minutes by bus to Basel Airport. There’s no reception as such, at first I thought they misunderstand what I want, because they made me sit at a table in the restaurant. The rooms are small, mine had a sink inside which is a plus. Kind of noisy as people keep passing under my window speaking loudly. WiFi network that was mentioned on the card, didn’t exist. I had internet on my phone so it didn’t bother me so much but I was left with a tiny disappointment inside. Pleasant surprise - sleepers. No hairdryer :(... The main light in the room didn’t work. I don’t think I would want to stay here again.
If you are looking at this hotel I presume you are not looking to spend too much money on somewhere to rest your head.
This place is clean and basic, ideal for somewhere cheap to have a sleep.
There are around 7/8/9 rooms in the hotel I believe. There is a shared shower room and also separate toilets for men and for women. To get to the hotel rooms there are a few sets of stairs. The hotel is above restaurant.
Pros
- nice staff
- very good location in the middle of the walking street
- next to main tram stop (no noise)
Cons
- pillows where not very comfortable
The other reviews are accurate. It's simply not work CHF 60 per night. It's clean and in a great location. But there are 9 rooms sharing one toilet and one shower.
Also, there's a terrible smell coming up from the kitchen. And the cooks stand in the hall smoking cigarettes all day.
The wifi also didn't work great.
Hotel near the tram station, walkable , few metres. Hotel provided free city travel pass for the entire period of stay which helps you to explore the city with out any additional expense. Rooms are ok with shared bath rooms, which are clean. Helpful staff.
And for cheapest I mean 50 euros per night. Well, it's Switzerland. The rooms are pretty small and the toilet and shower are sharing, but I've seen worst. Not bad, book it if you need a "cheap" one night stay. A bit noisy at evening. Great location.
We booked this hotel because it was the cheapest option we found on the city...but it was 85€ event thought. For the same price I've been in luxury hotels in other cities but this is Basel, so all you get is a ugly room with shared bathroom in the third floor with no lift in a hotel with no reception. In favor, the hotel has a excelent location in the center and the staff is friendly.
I only recomend it if you are looking for the cheapest option and the other hotels are much more expensive.
This hotel has a friendly staff and its situation in downtown Basel if you look at the price I payed (65 CHF the night) is fantastic, and therefor the 3*! If you go after the room it's only 1* worth. There are no elevators up to the 3rd floor. The rooms are really clean (everything is in Switzerland), but the decoration looks like a bathroom with tiles all over, so no charme at all. But the worst thing is the kitchen on the 2nd floor for the 2 restaurants in the building. It is noisy to at least 11 pm ans i guess if you sleep light, you cant sleep at all! (I mostly did fall a sleep at around 1 am). So if you are on a thight budget (which is almost impossible in this country, a pizza costs 25 CHF to take cheap dishes) and have a heavy sleep, it's an ok place. If not or you are with children, avoid this place
If you want to save money this hotel can be a solution in Basel but not for demanding people. The room is really basic and bare but not dirty. Toilet and shower are outside the room and shared with other guests. There is no breakfast. There is no wifi.
There is not a reception, when you get to the hotel you are welcomed in the restaurant. The rooms are on the upper floor.
Location of the hotel is very central.
Not recommended for business trips due to lack of comfort.
First things first: my one-night stay at Stadthof cost about 1/3 of what I would have paid at any other similarly central Basel hotel. That's worth a star all on its own.
That said, know that it's SPARE: I had a tiny little twin "bed" (more of a cot, really) with a separate shared bathroom. The staff was lovely; really helpful and kind. There happened to be a concert happening in the nearby square which lasted until after midnight. I was on the backside of the building, but it was still loud. Even when the music died down, drunk people chatting away in the alley kept me awake for a while.
If you're looking for a cheap, clean, well-located budget hub in Basel, go for it. If you're precious about sleep and "amenities," pull out the Amex and fork over (quite) a few more francs.
In terms of location/price ratio, probably one of the best options available in Basel. It is smack-dab in the middle of the city bordering the old town and quite literally in walking distance of all but few of the Basel sights.
In return for location and competitive prices, you get basics and basics only. Rooms are up from the restaurant (couple of flights of stairs), clean and sparsely but adequately furnished with television (featuring mostly Swiss, German and French channels) and a small map/guide included. Few electricity sockets (one, two if the lamp is unplugged) and all of the Swiss type so adapter is a must for most.
There is a sink with mirror in the room, but the shower and toilet (male female separate) are shared with the other rooms on the floor (about ten of them) and wifi is lacking. Staff are mainly concerned with the restaurant (which is also where the reception desk is) and therefore hotel guests will be accorded a correct but somewhat distant, very functional welcome. Safety is good, with a room key which will also open the main door during non-office hours.
Overall good choice if one is looking for a cheap, centrally located place in Basel used for resting between outdoor quests.
For where it is you can get to just about anywhere. Most of the tram routes meet here. The main shopping area for super swiss fashion indulgence is right there, and short walk to the Munster if repentence is your thing. If going for the first time it can be a bit confusing getting from SBB station to hotel Crossing a zigzag of flyovers although its only 500mtrs.Dont forget the important bit that a stay there will get a free travel pass for all the time of stay. Wont say much about the hotel pros and cons as it is fully agreeable to what has already been said by others. The main downside is the noise from the kitchen area which is just down below but the advantages out weigh the niggles, especially the value for money.Dont forget it is Switzerland.
This is definitely the hub of Basel, opposite the Historical museum at the Barflüsserplatz tram station, including the tram noises into late at night. Upstairs to the restaurant with no lifts. Very neat and clean room and shared bathroom facilities. Poor soundproofing; I could hear the guy snoring next door. Being a light sleeper I had to leave one day early for a good night's sleep elsewhere. Should you not mind noise and need a very central location this would be a reasonably priced accommodation.
The location of the hotel is ideally located relatively close not only to the SBB Bahnhof, but also to a large number of Basel's attractions. Compared to Basel hotels it is definitely cheap; however, compared with nearly anywhere else it is a rip-off for what you are getting.
No matter what room you book, there will be a common shower and then two bath rooms per floor. (At least 10 rooms per floor) Surprisingly, during my time there I had no problems in regards to the use of the showers or the bathrooms. The bathrooms are well kept and well stocked.
The one and only complaint I have is the service. The service wasn't terrible-don't get me wrong-but merely unfriendly and impersonal.
The 8 rooms are located behind and above a restaurant and there's no front lobby. You feel like you're sleeping in the kitchen. It is a central location but was not the most enjoyable. Shared bathroom and shower were nothing special.
Loved the location, right at the start of the shopping street, probably best location in town. Problem is that there is no parking space close, nearest parking garage was about 10 minutes walk. Personnel is really friendly. Rooms don't have their own showers or toilets, there is one shared shower for the 8 rooms. All 8 rooms are on the 4th floor, with no elevator. For Switzerland the place is cheap, but for the facilities you get it really quiet expensive. Overall, not bad.
