Good rooms, but poor management and rude service
It is a real shame to have to write this review because the property itself is actually very good: the rooms were clean and spacious, the bed was comfortable, and the bathroom was large and well-maintained. However, the extreme rudeness and total lack of flexibility from the manager ruined our stay. In a place that should prioritize hospitality, this is simply unacceptable.
Here are the issues we encountered:
1. Total inconsistency with breakfast hours: Although Booking.com stated breakfast was from 9-11, the welcome message from the property said 9-13, and the blackboard on-site said 8:30-11, the manager treated us with arrogance when we arrived at 11:00 on the first day. He insisted it ended at 10:45, denying the evidence of their own written and verbal instructions. We had to argue just to receive what we had already paid for.
2. Zero flexibility and no refunds: For the second and third day, as we had a diving session and an early transfer, we asked to move our breakfast forward by just 30 minutes or, alternatively, to have a simple "take-away" bag (just two sandwiches). Both requests were coldly rejected. Despite being unable to use the service due to their rigidity, they also refused to refund the breakfast portion of our payment.
3. Petty Management: In a location where tap water is not drinkable, I believe providing at least one bottle of water per day should be the bare minimum for any hospitable stay. Instead, on our final day, the manager left a note on our door demanding 400 Rupees (~1€) for water. There was no "goodbye" or "safe travels"—just a cold demand for a tiny sum of money. Considering we essentially "gifted" the hotel three prepaid breakfasts, the decision to leave a note over 1€ felt incredibly petty and insulting.
The rooftop bar with the amazing view
The location of the property is brilliant just outside of the busy road, but still in walking distance/ close to popular restaurants and my boyfriend’s favourite part was that the location is right in-front of devils point. The hotel also has an upstairs terrace with is a great to place to chill late afternoon / evening. When we stayed there is a bar downstairs and upstairs on the terrace however these were closed as the original owner has just retook over the hotel and is therefore waiting for a licence to sell alcohol.
A few ants in the bathroom but nothing major or anything unexpected considering the climate
Amazing place with the warmest, welcoming staff and the cutest dog.
Breakfast is amazing overlooking Zion surf break, which works extremely well! We ended up staying here four weeks with other guests staying even longer.
Ruma Surf Hotel is an amazing place to stay on the Southwest coast of Sri Lanka! We love the location, with a great surf spot just at its doorsteps, located perfectly just a quick ride away from other fantastic surf spots of Midigama and Ahangama. We love the energy of the place, the house and especially of its staff. Jude, Ryan and Dylan are very hospitable, super friendly, caring, understanding and accommodating hosts. And we love Jude's pasta cooking skills! It's one of the best pasta meals we've ever come across, surprisingly in Sri Lanka! They helped us plan a trip to Yala National Park, as well as back to the airport. We were allowed to change rooms depending on vacancy and extending our stay to three weeks! We will definitely return, as we truly love the area and that unforgettable experience.
Great location and facilities were really nice. There’s a really nice panoramic view from the top of the building and a nice hangout area.
Street noise was a little loud
Very simple
Nada a apontar!
The location of this hotel was excellent, but unfortunately the service and condition of the room were extremely disappointing.
When we checked in, the room was not properly cleaned — we actually had to sweep the floor ourselves. The bed was also unclean, with visible stains on the bedding, which was unacceptable. There weren’t even basic courtesies such as complimentary water bottles provided in the room, which is something you would normally expect.
The biggest issue, however, was when we requested to change our reservation dates. Initially, they offered us a refund that was significantly lower than the price difference shown on Booking.com. When we politely asked for clarification and possible solutions, they simply said this was the amount they had to bear on their end, without offering any real assistance. It took nearly three hours of back-and-forth before anything was resolved — by that point, we were so frustrated that we were ready to leave and let them keep the money for the two nights.
The owner handled the situation very unprofessionally, speaking loudly and making the issue public in front of others, even after we agreed to pay. The repeated emphasis on the percentage they had to bear felt unnecessary and uncomfortable. Overall, the experience left us feeling disrespected and poorly treated.
Very close to the town but a little bit far to walk in the mid day heat! The owner and receptionist were lovely and very friendly. I loved the rooftop terrace too. Very comfortable room and great value for money
The road noise is very loud so just something to keep in mind
