Wisma Batu is a peaceful and authentic accommodation surrounded by nature, run by a local family who lives on the property. The highlight is the beautiful garden, carefully maintained and full of fruit trees, creating a relaxing and lush environment. The property is also close to a small stream where you can cool off after a hot day.
The place is clean and welcoming, and the host can prepare delicious local dishes on request. What truly makes the stay special is the incredible hospitality of the family: they are genuinely kind, helpful with anything you might need, and make you feel at home very quickly.
During our stay we also did a 2-day jungle trekking with Supri, an excellent guide that we highly recommend. He is friendly, knowledgeable, and very attentive. He even came to pick us up by motorbike to bring us to the accommodation he collaborates with. Throughout the trek he explained everything we encountered in the jungle, from plants to animals.
Trekking prices are generally similar because they are coordinated locally, and most short treks follow standard routes. Longer treks (5 days or more) are much more customizable and offer a deeper adventure which I suggest. Even with just two days we had a fantastic experience. The jungle is rich in wildlife and you will almost always see animals. The best season is roughly from June to August when fruit is abundant and monkeys are more active.
The trekking team included Mardan and Mister Joe, the camp cook, who prepared generous and incredibly safe & tasty meals. Honestly, we ate better in the jungle than in many restaurants around Sumatra. In the evening at the riverside camp, after a refreshing swim, we even learned some fun local card games together.
A real experience feeling as an hiking friend group.
The location is not very central and does not offer a direct panoramic river view. However, the beautiful garden largely makes up for this. The rooms are very simple: the bathroom uses a bucket system instead of a flush toilet (common in the area), the shower has room-temperature water only, and there is just a fan in the room. Given the local climate, though, the fan is generally sufficient.
It's a beautiful garden setting. If I were to stay in BL for a week I might want the quiet that Batu Mandi offers. But for someone new to BL, who likely won't stay for more than 4 days, I think "downtown" makes more sense. I also visited during the low season. There were very few tourists about (I was the only one staying at Batu Mandi) and I got the impression that their well regarded restaurant was not open for business.
A looong-ish walk to town. The CONSTANT PRESSURE to book a tour through them even after I said I wasn't interested. I had actually booked a tour with a company that didn't have an affiliation with a guest house. Batu Mandi asked me FIVE TIMES to cancel the plans I had already made and book through them. And they were clearly unhappy that I didn't.
Unglaublich freundliche Familie!
People working here are amazing, fun, and kind! We enjoyed hanging out with Dwi, Gina, and talking with other people working in the hotel. The hotel has a beautiful garden in the front and also offers lot of food and delicious fresh juices.
We signed up for a 3 day jungle trekking via this hotel and also enjoyed the trekk a lot! Our guide Coco went the extra mile to make sure we are having a great time. If you have a chance ask for Coco as your tour guide and sign up for a longer trekk if you're feeling adventurous!
The road to the hotel is unpaved and there's not many signs. It might be a bit difficult to find if you're driving here yourself.
Room upgrades promotion(if books small 1bed room, up grade large 3 bed room) is absolutely fake promotion. location is far from village. No restaurant No shop near by. No wifi in the room. quiet atmosphere with good garden but there are many inconvenient things such as not good amenities linen toilet.
Batu Mandi is an amazing and quiet place. It feels like a home, the family is very kind. They helped me to learn some Indonesian.
The food was delicious, always fresh and beautifully decorated. Many fruits and herbs from their lovely garden. Thank you so much Jamila, Gina and Dui.
I enjoyed the jungle tour with Leo. He is a great guide.
It's difficult to leave this wonderful place.
Really nice people and a quiet beautiful place.. 😍
The staff was very nice. When a frog got into my room, they dealt with it promptly. The eating area has great views.
This hostel is FAR from the rest of town, which honestly came as a surprise to me. It looks close on Google Maps, but it is not close.
Lovely quiet location, surrounded by beautiful gardens, the jungle and river very close by. Nice family. Rooms a decent size.
Fan in the room is enough to keep us cool.
The rooms are in great need of renovation- the beds are very worn, the walls cracked, the bathroom door doesn’t close, non-flushing toilet, cold shower, a sink that just empties into your feet beneath.
