The crew is mostly sweet, rooms are huge
We initially received a very expensive “Tatami Living” room that had a strong bad smell, a leaking faucet, and visible mold in the air conditioning. When we complained, the front desk staff admitted they were aware of the smell and said it was “the smell of the tatami room.” We were moved between rooms multiple times during our stay, which completely disrupted our honeymoon experience.
In the end we were upgraded to the Presidential Suite, which we appreciated, but the hotel still felt very old and outdated for the price level. The facilities were extremely disappointing compared to other ryokans and onsens we stayed at in Japan. especially the onsen itself, which felt small and underwhelming. Overall, the experience did not feel worth the very high price we paid.
Beautiful room, lovely restaurants
Paid extra to have a Mountain View room and did not get one

Relived some nostalgia
Too old, hasn’t been updated in the last 10 years since we last visited. No longer offering the fantastic endless champagne on arrival. I’m sorry but not good value for money
The room was so spacious and comfortable. The hotel, though not that close to the main streets of Gora, has a complimentary shuttle bus making a lot of attractions easily accessible. The area is so beautiful and the onsen onsite is wonderfully relaxing. The buffet breakfast was fantastic and dinner at the sushi restaurant was delicious. The staff were friendly and helpful. It was our kids' favourite place to stay on our trip.
Beautiful location and great views.
Pretty location
No options for day trips with hotel. Room did not have nice feeling that you wanted to stay in it for longer than necessary
It’s a beautiful hotel with lovely amenities to sit and enjoy and take in more traditional beautiful Japan. Mt Fuji view is very limited.
It’s not as kid friendly as they promote. Children often told off for talking or playing
Rooms are a nice proportion and amenities generally good.
As with many places in Hakone, hotel is remotely located but knowing this the options to get transport from here are minimal and frustrating. The hotel staff are well aware of the issues but don’t do much to prepare guests in advance. Even the hotel shuttle only starts at 9.45am and it can take over an hour to get a taxi or an uber before then. The hotel staff were amongst the least helpful we experienced in our entire stay in Japan. They are not forthcoming with options. Given there are few dining options in walking distance or near driving distance (and the difficulty to get transport) you are forced to eat at the hotel, but it’s poor value and the standard items are often “not available” or “sold out” forcing guests to trade up to pricier items.
We heard other guests complaining about the same stuff.
