The room was fairly big and it was comfortable. The public bath has several pools.
The public bath is open to day use so it can quite crowded.
The half board was great and very filling. The onsen had a unique texture to the water, and the place had a very traditional feel to it. Felt like plenty of locals headed here to use the onsen.
Not a dislike, but just a note: The shared bathroom refers to a public onsen (gender separated), which has to be used if you want to shower. The rooms do come with their own toilets. A private onsen might be available for a cost, but I personally did not check / use this.
When checking in, the staff also did not seem to understand English or have the tools to manage this, so it would be best to have a translator app ready.
The onsen was great and the staff were super helpful.
It’s hard to find what was good about this hotel. May be the woman who cooked and the one who cleaned. The room was clean and there was an AC.
It was one of the most terrible hotels.
1. Due to the rain the onsen was closed. There was a high water and it was not possible to use the onsen. The hotel is in the middle of nowhere and onsen was the only reason I booked it. We had no shower for 3 days and it was hot summer and we were sweating as hell. I understand that it was not possible to repair but the owner could propose us a discount or to pay another onsen in the neighbourhood. He could do anything to help us but he didn’t.
2. on the second day we came at 10 pm. We stayed here during nebuta festival and it ends late. The owner knew that we are not there as we said we will go to the festival. He closed the door and switched of the light in the building. We tried to get inside and we were desperate. We had to call police and ask neighbours for help. It took us 45 minutes to get inside. We had a child with us.
3. Every morning they switched on alarm in our room at 6am to wake up us. We were tired. We never asked for alarm.
4. No one spoke a word in English. I have a very poor knowledge of Japanese and that helped. Without it we would be lost.
5. the old owner clearly disrespects and dislike foreigners and he never even greeted us or answers to our greetings. Why to place your ryokan on booking if you dislike foreigners? Customer service is really unknown in this place.
By far the worst place I stayed in Japan and in the whole world. Expensive and bad:
