Popped in for a quick pints my first pint of the day decided I needed to go to the toilet as I walked it the toilet absolutely stink of urine and I can’t stress enough how bad it was I’ve been in cleaner festival toilets and because it was so bad It literally make me sick I approached the gentlemen behind the bar and explained I was sick I’m sorry but it smells so bad in there I couldn’t keep it in then he decided to say we have to leave
Great music venue in the day and still has great bands on.
Downside - overpriced drinks at the moment sterile environment.
Far from friendly and the manager/ landlord can have an attitude to the general public. Not great customer service as the reviews show on here.
Hosts so great bands from 9.30pm at times.
I have had some great nights in this pub no question over the last 20 years.
My wife and I decided it would be nice if we went for a bath and a pint. It was a shame they had run out of ale, but this was not our main concern. We discovered when we got there that the baths had not been refurbished for 1500 years. Absolutely disgraceful.
I went at noonish to have our lunch. I asked for a lager and tea for my wife. The barman said no tea "it is a pub you know". My wife settled for a soft drink. We drank up and left without having lunch.
Great location but...
When we arrived was told no booking for us I had booked and paid in my name but turned out to have been put In friends name, man behind the bar quite rude said need to remember what name booked In.
Room was In good location for Christmas markets, but In 2 days there got very little z

The Roman Bath Pub is a pub I always look forward to visiting on any trip to a York I take .
I love the look of the pub, interior is superb,an island style serving bar, pubby decor and furnishings,tv's to enjoy the sport and plenty of seating options spread throughout this pub,one of the most distinctive features of the pub is the Great Wall art depicting scenes from the Roman times, this alludes to the Roman museum in the basement ,all in all it's a great pub to unwind in .
We were here on a Monday afternoon,we ordered bitters from John Smiths Brewery, served in excellent condition,we chilled out and took in the great pub we were in.
I enjoy a bitter every now and again ,a much underrated beer style in my opinion, when served freezing cold and in good condition as in this pub it's a totally refreshing brew.
We really enjoyed our bitters in here before we moved on and as on every other visit to The Roman Bath Pub we had a great time.
The Roman Bath Pub is easy to locate on St Sampsons Square.
Opening hours are;
Monday to Thursday ,open from midday.
Friday to Sunday ,open from 11am.
Well worth checking out if you're in the area.
Visited on a sunday afternoon for a quick bite to eat and a sit out of the cold. We opted for the bagutte and chips. 2 of us had the turkey...omg it was amazing, loads of meat, sausage stuffing and a pot of cranberry, all with gravy. Much more than i expected, but that is not a criticism, it was divine! My friend had the cheese one and said that too was great. Only £8.00 and came with a decent portion of chips. Pub was busy bit people seemed to be served quick and we didnt wait long at all for food. Will return, as location was great too
Stayed here for one night with a couple of friends and the room did the job! It was a cold November night and the room was well warm enough, as well as the windows blocking out pretty much all of the noise from outside.
The pub staff also informed us we could leave our bags with them on the second day so we did not have to lug these around York with us.
All in all, friendly, cheap and we would stay again!
I was in York today with my mum and we went here to get something to eat, I ordered a beef burger, and when it came, the bun had blood on it, and the burger was oozing out blood. My mum got the steak pie, and it wasn’t even a pie. She got 3 pieces of steak, with a pie top on top of it. She said that all she could taste was salt as well. Terrible.
A large group of us booked rooms here for two nights as part of the home leg of our Scotland NC500 road trip. Not having been to York before, we were not aware this hotel is literally in the centre of the city and therefore surrounded by other pubs, restaurants and the food markets. Perhaps a little more research should have been undertaken on our part.
The first hiccough occurred when we called ahead to enquire about the most suitable parking for our vehicles and unloading our baggage - the person behind the desk didn’t have a clue and we ended up skirting York city for about an hour before shooting into the nearest multi storey, which happened to be crazy expensive. The staff member wasn’t there when we arrived and the landlady was apologetic but it didn’t really help that we had been mislead and wasted a lot of time. The girl on the desk could only say “I don’t drive” as if that was some kind of justification for not knowing the basic parking arrangements of the road.
We then found out the pub plays host to a band Friday and Saturday nights, in itself not a problem - however we were allocated a room right at the front of the pub overlooking the square and therefore copped all of the noise from downstairs and surrounding clubs/bars/high jinks from revellers.
What also did not help was that the single glazed wooden framed windows did not close properly - even when I managed to close them (I was afraid they would be damaged) being single glazed they did not block out one bit of noise.
There was honestly noise outside til around 4am on both nights, and then a bin lorry arrived one morning causing further disruption. Obviously not the fault of the hotel though.
The rest of the party’s rooms were not at the front so they did not have the same noise issues as us.
I would probably stay here again from a convenience perspective but I would avoid a “room with a view” at the front as I didn’t get a good sleep either night unfortunately.
Second time the Wife and I have stayed here. Clean and tidy. Ideally situated in the Shambles so all landmarks are close. Could be a bit noisy for older guests on Friday and Saturday when bands are on, but didn't affect us. Would reccomend, we'll no doubt go again.
we stop in for a fine cold wine and a cold pint of cider, nice place, has nice items for the roman baths on display, the roman baths are down stairs worth a look at. we have visited this pub before about 7 years ago and this is the first time i noticed they had a beer. so a win win situation.
Great location, in the heart of the city centre. Our twin room (No 2) was clean, spacious and airey - 4 big windows, which all opened. There was a small, but adequate en suite. Beds were comfortable. Hot drink making facilities and a wall mounted TV were also in the room.
We were allowed to leave our bags prior to check in and after check out. Check in was quick and easy, and our bags had been put in our room for us. All members of staff were engaging, friendly and professional.
Overall, it was excellent value for money (we only paid £50 for our twin room, for a Thursday night stay via Bookings.com).
Be warned though, this is a city centre hotel, so expect noise at night / early morning.
Our only suggestion for improvement would be to replace the hand towels, as they were old and tired.
We would happily stay here again and would definately recommend it to others.
The room was perfectly clean and very comfortable. Fantastic huge window, right in the very centre of York. The late night drinkers were noisy, and the early morning bin men were even noisier, but coming from the depths of the countryside this was what we wanted! Proper city stay in the most beautiful city in England, couldn't ask for more. Sharon and her team were friendly and accommodating and we would definitely stay again. Thank you.
All staff very friendly and covid aware track and trace in operation lots of hand gel around and a one way system a safe to place to call in for a drink or meal after there lunch time ceases they have a early evening meal offer which changes every day well done the roman bath
Called for a few beers whilst in town, and this is one of the regular places I visit whilst in the city, and been using the pub for 40 years. Good selection of beers, staff always friendly and can get busy.
We visit York at least once a year and have always ate at The Roman Bath. Unfortunately our recent visit proved to be a mistake. The prices have increased while the menu selection and quality of food have deteriorated. Home cooked chips were over cooked and less than appetising. They are currently advertising for a chef and I’m not surprised. I am afraid unless there is a vast improvement we will not visit again.
My wife and I stayed here from Friday 10th to Sunday 12th May. Clean room, comfy bed, TV, Tea and Coffee supplied, nice clean Toilet and Shower. Does what it needs to do. No complaints, would reccomend as it's in the Heart of York, next to the Shambles. We will return.
Wasted money . Live band playing until 11.30 at night which we were only told about on arrival .
Filthy carpet . Wardrobe door had to be forced open as dragging on carpet .
Filthy bedside tables . Bed was broken . Single glazed window over the drinking tables outside which we could hear all the shouting and to top a crap night's sleep we were woken up at 8.30 by a window cleaner cleaning the window .
Absolute nightmare . Would never go back to this place . Disgusting
. Totally ruined one of our rare times away .
