Expérience volcanique et confort
Pros:

Great Family Experience - So much to do
Pros:

We had a wonderful (but short) stay at Gauchipelin. We're a family of 4 with a 7 and 9 year old and stayed only 1 night. The rooms are clean and worked fine for us. The property grounds are amazing. BRING BUG SPRAY!!!!

Food and Beverage: There are 2 main restaurants. One has a la carte and buffet and the other is more fine dining. Fine dining did not have a kids menu so we did a la carte and buffet. We like everything. Our favorite dish was the corn soup. There is also a bar that does happy hour. We grabbed a couple beverages before dinner which was also very good. Breakfast is free is great!

There are so many different things to see and be a part of at the hotel is was hard to pin down what to do.

Day 1: The first day we arrived from airport around 2pm. We checked in and walked to the Red Pond which was ok. Nothing too major but a nice little trek and jumped in the river. Next we relaxed by the pool which was a nice to have to cool off and relax.

Day 2: Our kids were a little young to experience the tubing so we did mostly "self guided" experiences. We drove to Oropendola waterfall first. It opens at 8am and there is a parking lot. A short hike and you come upon an amazing rope bridge to get into the waterfall. It was awesome. This waterfall experience is about an hour start to finish. Once we finished there we drove over to the hot springs and mud baths that open at 9am. This was another amazing experience. They provide towels and someone is there to help show you how to apply the mud. We spent about 2 hours in the hot springs and dipping into the river to cool off. There are changing stalls and bathrooms as well.

*If our kids were older and we had a longer stay planned in CR we would have probably preferred 2 nights but you can see a lot in a day. We did some hiking before breakfast and they have horseback tours, tubing, ziplining that all looked great.

We went straight from the airport (LIR) to the hotel and would recommend this approach if you are staying in multiple locations when visiting Costa Rica. You can get your adventures all while staying at the hotel. The hotel is about 45 minutes from the airport and you can stop at Walmart on way to pick up sunblock, bug spay, and snacks/beverages. Bring Bug Spray!

Go for the location not the hotel
Pros:

We recently stayed in the luxury glamping facility which is really just two large tents a bit away from the hotel. The room was very comfortable but extremely noisy as the canvas made a lot of noise in the wind. It was definitely a unique experience. We did have problem with the water quality one day and it took a lot of effort to get it resolved. The staff never showed us where the outdoor lights were and it is very dark out there. We should have been introduced to the tent facility more carefully. Bring a flashlight.
The surrounding area is amazing and worth a visit. There is a shuttle bus to the national park and waterfalls and hot springs. We really enjoyed all of them. Do get the staff to help you with purchasing the tickets to the national park. Just a crazy system requiring passports. There are staff at the park but you must buy tickets in advance. The shuttle bus only runs a few times a day and we ended up having to get a ride back to the resort as the next shuttle was not for a couple of hours. An expensive mistake.
The food is pretty bad. The main restaurant has a limited breakfast buffet. We made it work but it was not great. Service was friendly but fairly unprofessional. We ate there one night too. Awful. My dinner which was basically chicken with rice was so salty that it was inedible. I mentioned this to a number of people. No adjustment to the bill and no replacement.
The other two nights we got reservations at the other smaller restaurant on site. The service continued to be friendly but pretty unprofessional but the food was much better.
There is a bar area with happy hour and decent lunch food.
This is definitely a place to go for the amazing scenery but don’t expect much from the hotel.

Exceptional stay at an amazing hotel…can’t beat the location or access to attractions!
Pros:

This place exceeded our expectations. The rooms were spacious and spotless, AC worked well. In addition to chairs and hammocks in front of our room we also had a small back patio. Every morning we sat and had coffee and bird-watched. Everything was easily accessible, from reception and pool area to trails leading to waterfalls and swimming holes. The adventure center was conveniently located and the tours we went on were excellent. We felt safe at all times, whether walking around the resort at night or on a tour or visiting a waterfall. The grounds are clean and well-cared for, every employee was extremely helpful and friendly. The buffet breakfast that is included is amazing…so many options along with an omelet station and fresh fruit bar. We ate at both restaurants, excellent meal at La Hacienda.

Cons:

I am struggling to find anything! I would say I wish the pool area(pool, hot tub and bar) would stay open later than 7pm. It would be nice to be able to wind down in the hot tub when the temps are a little cooler at night. Also our meal at Nekajui was just ok for the $$.

Amazing and relaxing with lots of things to do in the sprawling property grounds
Pros:

Amazing ranch in the mountains, very close to Guachipelin volcano national park. Lots of activities, hikes, waterfalls and hot springs on the property. The birds, the peace and fresh air is a great retreat from everyday life. The 2 restaurant options are pretty good and the staff is very friendly.

Cons:

Hard to get to. Need a car or a shuttle.

Too large, too many Americans
Pros:

Our drive to the hotel via Rio negro hot springs entrance was over a bad road. Upon arrival it dawned on us this is a very big resort, with the terrible habit of having you wear armbands for identification (like the cows in our country with eartags....). The room was spacious and noice, good bed, nice terrace at the back, and a small terrace in the front which we did not use (it's right at the road). Good bathroom. Overall its quite large, it is a favorite for Americans flying into Liberia airport. This seems to cause staff to be less personal, as there are so many guests. There are several trails to waterfalls, and obviously one of the nice hikes in the National Park. Restaurants are large too, and we felt sorry for the two guys playing music in the morning and the evening without any listening audience. This was not our thing, for us it was too large, too many Americans, too commercial.

Rely bad resort.
Pros:

When i came to the hotel the woman in the reception presented med with a long contract which i had to sign. At the location its an active vacation. They said I had to carry a large key safe around. In waterfalls, ziplanes, rafting, mudbading, horseback riding. When I sad it was stupid to carry the safe key around, the woman in the reception told that I was stupid. The most rude remark I ever herd at an hotel. She told med that that direction of my hotel room was that way. I had to drag my luggage over gravel, no help was offered. In the room they treat you as as thief. There was signs everywhere. You will be charged by water in the minibar. There is sign which tells you what you will be charge by towels, You fell like they are going to charge you for everything. They dont appreciate you as i costumer. After all costumer service was horrible at this hotel. I complained to may travel company, but no apologize was offered. I would definitively recommend you to spend your vacation elsewhere.

This hotel is a home run
Pros:

This hotel exceeded expectations. The staff was lovely. The grounds were beautiful. The food was delicious. To top it off, it was an excellent value for what you get. Sadly we didn’t know how great the hotel was so we only booked one night as a stop over before going to La Fortuna. If I could do it again I would’ve stayed longer. Hoping to come back.
