The room was good for the price and looked recently renovated, to a good standard. The hotel is near the train station and the town centre.
They lock the front door at 11pm and you need to call a number to get back in. However, when we called around 11.30, there was no answer or at all for the next 45 mins of calling. Eventually, after getting worried we'd never get to bed, I knocked on the door and windows and made a lot of noise to get the attention of the staff, who then had the cheek to complain about the noise I made, not sure what else I was supposed to do. They then tried to blame the phone when they had clearly not been monitoring it. I rang again when I got inside and could hear it ringing. Apart from that, the rest of the staff were pleasant enough. The food is not great, but depends what you order, some is alright. The pub could do with some TLC, it used to be a Wetherspoons and retains that general [lack of] atmosphere and service level, which is a shame as it is an historic building.

so tired, very much in need of redecoration, smelled of cigarette smoke, 3 flights of difficult stairs to room, bar closed by 10pm, front doors closed by 10pm, very tired fixtures and fittings, shower not working well, stains and chips on everything, VERy hard bed
Friendly staff made us feel welcome
No hot breakfast due to sickness but these things happen and I could here the door opening in middle of night from corridor every hour we were room 105

Lovely welcome . Pleasant comfortable room and bed. Very clean. Great location.
Unfortunately the chef was ill on Saturday morning so no cooked breakfast. There was toast and criossants, but a few slices of cheese and ham would have been a good compromise. Maybe a bowl of hard boiled eggs too.

The staff were really genuine and helpful.

Car park was a challenge to find. Didn't mention it was a multi story post code took me to the station car park.
No mention that they don't do main meals on a Sunday or Monday on booking.com but was directed to a couple of restaurants around the corner with 20% off for staying at The Bell Hotel.
The current menu had quite a lot of meals not available.
No one mentioned staff training for fire alarms between 5.30pm and 8.30pm.
Very clean, comfortable bed, good food, friendly staff, superb location.
Doors close at 10pm so if you are out after that time you have to ring someone to let you in.
The location was pretty good.
The rooms on the top floor are not easily accessible for anyone who may struggle with mobility. There is a very steep staircase with a 90-degree turn at the top. Some of the lower stairs are uneven.
Do not be put off the tired, tatty state of the pub dowstairs before you even get to the check in desks. The rooms upstairs lookndecidedly better, fairy comfortable and the breakfast is very good. On top of the cold selction breakfast menu you can have a cooked to order breakfast from the hot breakfast menu. Helpfulness and kindness of the staff makes up for any shortcomings in the property such as there was no lift but the staff kindly took my heavy suitcase into my room.
