I had heard so much about this restaurant over the years from family and friends that finding myself in Edinburgh I decided to treat myself. It didn’t live up to expectations. I started with the terrine which I thought was overcooked and hard and did not have a good taste, then to the halibut which was the redeeming feature. The desert was uninspiring. Overall I was not impressed with the value or the food.
Where to begin with this review….we have stayed in a lot of top hotels in many countries across the world over the years - from boutique to mountain castles to beaches and cities…but the witchery has to be in the top few of these. It’s simply unique location and style, coupled with the fantastic decor and ambiance make it a global standout. It’s easy to get a bit carried away with a review after a good stay somewhere but this was simply perfection. The restaurant with rooms concept works perfectly in this location, with the suites a fabulous treat for the senses - it really is like a Time Machine taking you back in history, but coupled with all the luxuries and top class service you’d expect in this age.
Supper in the original restaurant is a treat not to be missed - the ambiance continues here with a surreal dining room. The gothic style compliments the suites perfectly. The food was excellent and the service was a perfect balance of attentive but discrete - surely it cant be long before the restaurant gets a Michelin star…it’s certainly on a comparable level we’ve experienced with venues that do…..
For sure it’s not inexpensive, but for top class global perfection, I’d say it’s worth every penny.
So, in all, one of the most memorable all round experiences we’ve had. Thanks to all the Witchery team involved in making it happen - keep doing the same and we’ll be back for more.
My partner, Sam, celebrated his 26th birthday on Monday, and having always dreamt of spending the night in a decadently divine, gothic styled hotel suite, complete with a standalone bathtub; I can confirm surprising him with a night stay in The Vestry most definitely ticked every box we could have hoped for; and so much more!!
Every single detail, down to the letter, we could tell had the utmost thought and attention to perfection delivered.
Despite not being able to afford this kind of hotel experience very often, but having come from a background working for reputable boutique hotel brands, I felt as though my understanding of expectations and delivery of such, were surpassed in ways I never could have expected.
Seeing Sam's face light up with magic on check in is most definitely an experience I'll never forget. The Witchery truly is rooted in mystycism and magic; and we both felt it in the most gloriously transportative way. Never before have either of us had the opportunity and ability to slip away into a carefree alter ego, completely detatched from the realities of home life we planned this trip to escape from.
We had dinner in the restaurant Monday night; and my word. What an experience!! It was sensationally divine, and we're still lost for words trying to describe how that meal not just tasted, but felt.
I can't thank you, your wondeful staff, and enchanting establishment enough for giving Sam & myself the most magical, mystifying & memorable first visit to Edinburgh.
We're already planning our next trip across for June to celebrate my 35th birthday! We've whittled down our favourites, and have decided that The Turrett is next on the list!
As usual, the Magic Garden dining room at The Witchery is a "Magical" experience in Edinburgh. Our server Mackensie found the perfect balance of professionalism, friendliness, and service to create a truly memorable experience.
Every aspect of this dinning experience is top notch starting with the reservation booking thru after dinner drinks.
This is a must experience for anyone who enjoys the highest quality meal.
Wunderschöne und liebevoll eingerichtete Zimmer
Leider müssten einige Dinge auch einmal von einem Fachmann repariert werden
Great location on the royal mile atmosphere unbelievable you must stay to experience it rooms unbelievable settings value great
Service and quality of food was superb everything was perfect we have eaten there several times over the years but staying there is a experience never to be forgotten will be back to enjoy the experience again
If you had to rate it we would recommend 6 stars
You step out of the 21st century and into the 16th century unbelievable stay and you will not want to leave
I booked the Witchery to celebrate my husbands 50th birthday. The staff where amazing made sure the wished him a happy birthday, when we where shown to our suite as the door was opened we both where in astonishment at the suite, the attention to detail was amazing, the breakfast in the dinning room was out of this world and again the staff where fantastic, nothing was too much bother, helpful and attentive. When we where checking out again the staff thanks us for celebrating with them and offered any other services i.e. taxis ore any other information that was needed, also offered to keep our case so we could walk around Edinburgh without the case. The full experience was outstanding from start to finish and we will certainly be back. Thank you all again for making my husbands big birthday so special.
Gothic romantic dream! Everything that is Edinburgh at its best in this gorgeous venue. The staff are fantastic, even refilling the ice in the wine cooler during turn down. Perfect site, perfect staff.
I have the good fortune to live in Edinburgh and have walked past The Witchery many many times and never entered.
Tonight we laid that particular ghost to rest.
I could bore you with countless adjectives with regard to the food, staff, ambience, location and history of the place but I won't, if you haven't been you can do your own research.
What I will say is it's been my immense good fortune to eat in great restaurants all over the world and The Witchery is most certainly up there, very possibly in the top 3, perhaps, just perhaps number 1.
If you're in town and feeling flush, go, for once it's actually better than the hype.
Arriving at the Witchery on a cold winters night in December was like stepping into a book. The taxi dropped us at the end of the narrow lane and through the gap we could see the twinkling lights of the real Christmas tree. Our bags were taken up the windy staircase and we were welcomed into the most stunning room lit with warm lights and classical music playing on Alexa. We had a bottle of champagne waiting on ice and enjoyed exploring the hidden nooks in the suite especially the large bathroom with a roll top bath and bath oil on offer. We had dinner in the restaurant which was also wonderful, although really we couldn’t wait to get back to our room. In the morning they arrived with a breakfast hamper full of warm pastries and a beautiful fruit platter. We enjoyed fresh coffee with a beautiful view of the city. Needless to say we stayed until the last possible moment and they were kind enough to keep our luggage for us whilst we explored the cobbled streets of Edinburgh. The entire experience was magical and we will most definitely be back
Breath taking room - felt like a museum. Comfortable bed service was excellent. We had the lunch which was perfect as we went to the Scotsman cinema and ghost tour in the evening. Returned and had pizza delivered to the room. Food was fantastic at lunch classic traditional food and the restaurant was truly special. Breakfast also was fantastic.
Worth its money for a special occasion. Staff very professional calm and relaxed.
Totally extraordinary place to stay. Luxury on another level. The rooms were so exquisite and the bathroom was just wow! All the staff were incredible. Cannot fault the place
Nothing other than I now have to save up to try another of the rooms.
I was at the witchery in 2024 lovely this year January 2026 it was very different the fillet steak £28 was just ok nothing special nothing but a potato rosti with it nothing else carrots just ok cauliflower just ok l was £100 no starters or sweet no drinks only a soft drink was so disappointing as it was my birthday a waste of money much better places I’ve never complained but this was just a complete rip off
My wife and myself stayed in the sempill room..we had save for this night and knew it was going to be a one off experience ..
It was all worth it. From the communication via email to the moment we checked out..we felt like.celebrities
What a wonderfully cleverly designed place to stay... everything about it from the decor to the music transports you back to another time.. so you forget exactly where or when you are and can completely relax..
The extras left for us make the experience even more magical and the breakfast was 5 star.
There is nothing more I would add...it was perfection
There is a lot I love about the Witchery: the staff, the ambience and the sense of occasion.
I've eaten here a few times and always for a special occasion.
We ate here again in December but I wanted to say that the food is far too expensive for what you sometimes get. The seafood cocktail at £26 for a starter, for three tiny bits of seafood is robbery. As someone who works in catering, I know there is no way to justify such an offering for this price. I expected it to be a decent servicing, but unfortunately we had to fill up on the baked (frozen not fresh) rolls which came with the starter. Bread should always be baked at such an establishment.
Everything else was amazing thank you but it leaves a sour taste in your mouth when you pay over the odds for below average. And nothing at the Witchery should be below average.
From the minute we checked in the experience at The Witchery was of the highest standard.
Breakfast with Blair as our table server was a perfect example of someone that is happy and proud to be where they are, nothing was too much trouble, he took the time to chat and was a treat to engage with, what an asset!
The rooms were above expectations with so many extras that were fitting to the environment, we especially loved the champagne ☺️
We cannot recommend this hotel, the staff, the restaurant or The Witchery experience enough, thank you
I had read so much about the Resturant, booked well in advance.
Overpriced for very mediocre food - nothing that special that you could not easily create at home.
I had the fish which was dry and lacking in a sauce - very little flavour or taste.
I wanted to go as I had heard so much about it - bit of a let down. very small inside and interior is not as amazing as the pictures make out.
Service was very good from the staff
Please note that even a basic breadroll that could have been from Sainsbury's is charged.
Not worth it in the end was not very special or notable -there are better Resturants. better to look elsewhere for the same cost could have had an amazing meal at one of the grand hotels.
Dined for lunch with wife and 6-month old daughter as final stop on trip on Scotland. Staff explicitly snooty around young child. Made up feel unwelcome. Offered no help carrying pram down steep steps. Sat us in very inconvenient area of restaurant. No baby toilet facilities. Just absolutely awful service overall despite us willing to pay £££ for a lunch for a young family. Avoid. Avoid. Avoid.
