What an interesting place.
Jim, an Irish Expat, is an interesting person. I enjoyed sharing stories with him.
Jim's dogs Millie (mom) and Benji are two good dogs. They want to be your friends, but respect your space too (If you're not a 'dog person' you'll know what I mean).
Let me be clear so there are no mismatched expectations. This not a seaside resort. The cabinas are not fancy. The bathroom is perfectly fine. The kitchen is utilitarian, and a nice to have, but I'd be hard pressed to cook a gourmet meal in it.
The beach isn't a white sand beach - those are close by.
The vegetation is incredible. You really are in the jungle.
Cabuya is a quiet town. It has some restaurants and two small markets, so you can get what you need. And there's a brewery a short walk away.
The best thing for me was the sky at night. It's dark. There aren't many places left in the world that are dark, and this is one of them. You can see the Milky Way sitting in the Adirondack chairs overlooking the water.
You fall asleep to the sound of the waves.
You awake to the sound of the monkeys (which is kinda cool).
Beautiful. Quiet. Dark. Remote but accessible. If that's your thing, this is the place.
Nothing, really
The owner Jim was very welcoming and went out of his way to help us out - letting us do some laundry, giving us recommendations for day-trips and nearby snorkelling spots. The cabins are quite rustic but charmingly so, and the setting is lovely. Cabuya has a very lived-in feel, not as tourist-oriented as nearby Montezuma or Santa Teresa, but with several excellent restaurants/sodas and 2 well-stocked mini-supermarkets, all within walking distance of the hotel. There is direct beach access, where you can walk out to the cemetary island/peninsula at low tide, and explore the shallow tidal pools. Monkeys and tropical birds visited the site every morning, which was really special.
The accommodation did feel quite rustic for the price compared to other areas in Costa Rica, but for the immediate local area the price was reasonable.
Being able to cook and save money not going to restaurants. Beds were very comfortable.
I need to use the bathroom during the night and not happy to use a stairway together to bathroom
Great location right on a quiet beach. Close by a lovely restaurant. Plenty of walks, swimming and wildlife
Outdated facilities in the small cabana where we stayed.
