My stay was warm, welcoming, affordable, and far better than I expected.
Pros:

Staying at this hotel was an absolute pleasure from start to finish. From the moment I arrived, the staff made me feel genuinely welcomed. I was travelling for business to Westport and Greymouth with my three daughters and our two dogs. The dogs slept comfortably in the car, while my children and I shared a room with two single mattresses and one queen mattress, all for an incredibly reasonable $97 per night, including breakfast.

One of the highlights of our stay was the hotel’s amenities. Over our three nights, my children and I enjoyed watching three DVDs: The Princess Bride, Cinderella, and The King’s Speech. It was a lovely way to relax together as a family at the end of each day.

The on‑site pub and restaurant served excellent meals made with fresh ingredients and attentive service. One evening we enjoyed steak, fries, roast vegetables, a garden salad, and a mixed vegetable platter. The restaurant was clearly popular with locals, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings when people gathered to watch the rugby.

The breakfast buffet was generous and well‑organised. We were provided with a fruit bowl containing four mandarins, four bananas, and four apples. The buffet included a loaf of bread with spreads such as table spread, Marmite, strawberry jam, honey, and peanut butter. There were 2 liters of milk and a selection of cereals including muesli, Rice Bubbles, Cornflakes, and Nutri‑Grain. Plates, cups, cutlery, a microwave, can opener, fridge, toaster, and electric jug were all available for use. A range of teas, coffees, hot chocolate, sugar, cookies, and four cans of fizzy drinks.

My children especially loved the hotel’s three cats and two dogs, who happily approached them for cuddles and pats. The staff consistently went above and beyond.

Cons:

After a long drive up from Dunedin, I did find the hotel was slightly further from Greymouth than I had imagined, but it was still a comfortable and convenient base for our stay.

Overall, this hotel exceeded my expectations in every way. It offers a rare balance of comfort, style, affordability, and genuinely exceptional service. I would gladly stay here again and recommend it to anyone seeking a memorable, stress‑free experience.

As a single mum travelling with three children, I was mindful of keeping our costs down, so we chose to have dinner at the restaurant only once rather than twice. The meal itself was good and fairly priced for a pub‑style restaurant, but I knew I could feed the family for less from places like KFC, Domino’s, or by picking up something simple from the supermarket.

At one point the cats were slightly messy, but the staff cleaned it up quickly and professionally. It didn’t detract from our stay at all, my children still absolutely adored them.

The room was warm, spotless, beautifully designed, and surprisingly spacious. My only suggestion would be to add a wardrobe or some shelving in the corner to help keep suitcases and bags neatly organised.

Pros:

I was actually very disappointed value for money wasn't there.
The pub is the oldest pub on the west coast and i was hoping to experience some local country in the bathroom but the night I stayed the bar was closed, nothing was mentioned about the dar of the pub being closed on certain days, very disappointing.

Cons:

The bar was closed , had i known it would be closed on certain days it would not have booked at all.

A characterful hotel in a pleasant small town.
Pros:

There’s no doubt the hotel has seen better days but this actually adds charm. The room was clean and cozy. Suzi and husband are accommodating. I booked the wrong date by accident but stayed on the intended night. Food was good although it’s very much a make it yourself breakfast! I’d stay again though.

Pros:

Clean and comfortable for a night. Friendly staff. They also serve dinner in the pub downstairs which was a bonus as we arrived late. Is not close close to amenities- is good for one night stay.

Cons:

Just remember this is a very old hotel! And it is budget with shared bathrooms. Good for a night stay.
