We chose this hotel because we were sailing from Kennacraig, which is 10 minutes away by car. We arrived down a private pothole-littered driveway (can someone sort this out?) to a warm welcome from reception. The lady showed us around the communal area and then up to our room. Our room was at the back of the hotel with a direct view over the water which in itself was lovely. The bathroom was spacious with plenty of room. There is a well-heated bar room on the ground floor with views over the gardens which are filled with beautiful rhododendrons. We enjoyed lagers while playing Scrabble before dinner. Dinner itself is in a purpose-built room which has views over the sea inlet. We went for a walk in the grounds, which are lovely; there are several incredible redwood trees and rhododendron bushes galore. Breakfast boasts a very good array of continental items, with a hot menu also that you can order from.
The guest room itself had two issues - the room had a simply enormous wardrobe in it which took up a lot of space, and the room was directly above the kitchens so the fans and kitchen noise didn't quieten down until about 10.30pm. I suspect the rooms in the main castle building don't have this issue but have a higher price tag. The mattress was solid-hard which gave me a little backache. (-2 points)
There is a lot of old fishing gear strewn about the grounds by the waterside which I think the hotel could easily clean up. It looked an absolute mess and would take two hours to sort out.
The lead waiter at dinner was strangely quite surly to start, but slowly warmed up. Dinner itself was like a glorified McDonalds. Within two minutes of ordering, the starter came out, and without two minutes of finishing our starters, the mains came out. Wow, quite the rush - a pet peeve of ours. Even if the dining room is busier - which it certainly wasn't - there is no reason to bring out everything within 30 minutes. It was also odd to have steak and venison served in ... a bowl [???]. Stay regularly because of excellent staff and lovely welcome for us and dog. Food always very good as well.

The bed could have been more comfortable
Very dog friendly. Staff were excellent. Food very good.
Rooms and furnishings are dated and mattresses could be more comfortable.
The staff was very kind and helpful. We felt very welcomed from the moment we stepped inside! The room size was amazing and view as incredible! It was a nice place to stay the night before heading to Islay.
