The Cliff Bay - PortoBay

Probably one of the top three hotels on Madeira. In terms of its position on the cliff edge overlooking the Atlantic and, for many, an excellent view of Funchal in all its glory, it is probably unmatchable. I would recommend this hotel for those seeking solid quality and service rather than superficial glitz or glamour.

Our 5th visit to Cliff Bay & standards as high as ever. Excellent service throughout hotel. Staff very efficient but also very friendly & helpful. All areas kept spotlessly clean. Just love our visits to Madeira & Cliff Bay hotel.

First stayed at the Cliff Bay in 2003 for a week and have returned every year since, sometimes twice in a year. Brilliant staff very good food and facilities.

We had a lovely time in this beautiful hotel. Our parents stayed here 2x per year loving every trip for over 10 years. We thought we would follow in their footsteps and book a week. We were not disappointed. All staff were great, kind and helpful. Nothing was too much. Very well organised.
The hotel is beautiful and friendly.

This was the first time we have holidayed in Madeira from end of January to the beginning of February .
We have holidayed April, May, July, August , October and November other times.
We have booked for 1st February already next year as it seems Madeira is a perfect place for rest and relaxation any time of the year .
Cliff Bay facilities, friendly staff and service with a smile is truly a gem of a hotel .
We especially love the comfortable beds . We appreciate fresh towels morning and evening. We spent days resting on loungers in their own area overlooking Funchal Bay ; so peaceful. Pool staff would appear with mattresses , drinks and always with a smile !
We have our favourite local places to eat in the evening.
We did enjoy breakfast at Cliff Bay Rose Garden restaurant. The egg lady makes perfect omelettes and poached eggs to order and with a smile too !
From the welcome at the door to the collection of cases and waiting in our transfer car for us on our departure , our holiday was top notch , thank you Cliff Bay.

Cliff Bay is superbly run by G.M. Antonio Pais whose well chosen staff in all areas of the hotel go out of their way to ensure that guests are brilliantly looked after in every way.
We have stayed here more than thirty times for month long visits and have that as we are now fully retired that this will be our only holiday destination in future years.
This is because it ticks all the boxes for the perfect holiday with food, service, cleanliness and staff quite outstanding.
Like us , there is a high proportion of repeat guests … another indication of the sheer excellence of this hotel.
Highly recommended for those who seek the perfect place to relax and forget all the worries of our troubled world .

Overall we enjoyed our stay at the Cliff Bay. We found the hotel much busier than last year which we felt affected some of the service. The staff are friendly and very helpful.

We had a 4 night stay at the cliff bay hotel via Jet2 indulgent escapes in January 2026. There was simply nothing wrong with this stay! From the moment we arrived we were made to feel so important by the friendly, caring staff. Food is excellent - although we never ate in Il Gallo (Michelin) restaurant - our choice was to breakfast each morning in the rose garden and then we headed out to town for our evening meals.
Everything about the hotel is on point; the rooms are spacious, well equipped, sharp dècor, well serviced. The communal spaces are clean, bright, welcoming. The pools (indoor & outdoor, sea water) are well maintained, loungers are plentiful, with attentive helpful staff. Hotel manger is a visible presence, keen to ensure every guest is enjoying their stay and experience. A large, luxurious hotel with a personal feel.

Wonderful hotel, good location. & friendly helpful staff, would not want to stay anywhere else in Madeira

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at The Cliff Bay. Our second stay at a Portobay group hotel, last stay in Oporto being excellent. Outstanding service, very good facilities, Rose Garden restaurant good for food, with excellent breakfasts.If I go again, I'd choose B&B rather than half board and try local restaurants (as well as the hotel ones) for dinner.

The Cliff Bay is an excellent luxury hotel with great sea views and facilities. Most rooms benefit from its seaside location but the few landside rooms should be avoided as these overlook the carpark/vehicle turning area which are uninteresting and can be noisy due to arrivals and departures.

One of the most impressive hotels we have ever stayed at. Nothing could be faulted. The food was incredible and service equally as impressive. Certainly, the room was one of the best ever with the most beautiful view. 10/10 on everything. Will definitely return to this hotel when we next visit Madeira.

This was our 3rd visit to the Cliff Bay. We had a sea view room which was large and very comfortable. Lovely large bed and well looked after by the housekeeping staff.
We opted for half board this time and ate dinner in the Rose Garden. Great welcome from Roberto and his team, great food and variety. Our last evening we opted for crepes suzette as a desert and it was fantastic - prepared at the table.
What makes this hotel so special is the staff. Everyone is so helpful and friendly.
A big thankyou to Roberto and all his team at the Rose Garden, they are truly exceptional. Also to Carla on reception and Sofia at the cocktail party.

The cliff Bay is a beautiful hotel very homely the staff are excellent the food is very good in all the restaurants if a bit pricey but you are saying at a 5 star plus hotel the rooms are very nice the views from the hotel are lovely overall it’s very good value
