I had visited this place during a difficult time of my life and oh did it allow me to do, feel, and be what I often cannot get while living in the city. Mr Herman and his family are so beautiful, genuine, and accommodating. You will feel accepted and safe with them. This is a place for those who love the raw, real and homey daily life experience.
You can hear the cow go moo moo, bugs singing; also expect bug(s) in your room and some droppings. I had the opportunity to go barefoot walking into the jungle blindly, see and hear the clear spring water run in the drain. Guided by the roaring sound of waterfall, I walked on the rather rocky pathway and saw other houses that are "alive" with laundry, tools, and some other random items that one may need. You might meet people transporting hay (?) for cows, carrying huge logs on their heads (even as a Malaysian with similar culture, I am so impressed by this!), squatting outside of their house just looking around or smoking, calling out to their neighbours loudly to chit chat, sharing food, doing construction works, harvesting fruits, mountain-biking, biking, cleaning, doing laundry, feeding the chickens,... One night, I had the opportunity to go to another homestay just down the road to hangout with the owner and some of the travellers there. We sang songs and enjoyed each other's presence in the present. The skies were clear and the stars were bright, I don't get that a lot in my hometown in Kuala Lumpur.
If you speak English and are ok with it, Mr Herman has a "speak English" session for the schoolchildren. Upon arrangement, they will arrive with their motorbikes one after another, everyone sit in a circle and just talk. (It was a surprise to me because I thought it was a regular weekend class but after the session I found out it happened because I said yes to talking to the kids. No wonder everyone was focused on talking with me!).
I wasn't prepared for the ice cold shower! Room might a bit small for 2 person to move around, but ultimately it is up to personal preferences (I was solo).
This was a really special experience, and so much more than just accommodation.
The owner, Herman, welcomes you to be part of his local life while you are living there, if this is something you would like to experience. I spent 5 days here and during this time I experienced more of the true local life than I ever could have without Herman. Herman spent time taking me round local plantations and farms owned by friends and family, he took me to his school and allowed me to spend time teaching English to his classes, he introduced me to all his friends and I spent multiple evenings and days with them during my time, from going for coffee to chilling to attending a religious dinner and prayer with them. During these 5 days I feel like I have become great friends with many people. Everyone I met through Herman has greeted me and welcomed me into their homes like family. I have rarely experienced the level of kindness anywhere else.
Herman’s family are all lovely, although they do not speak too much English, they will always interact and do their best, with a smile on their face.
Lunch and dinner is available to order daily, cooked my Herman’s mother. The food is excellent. I tried multiple dishes. All were great, cheap and large portions.
The experience I have had is worth so much more than this price you pay for your nights here. I enjoyed my time so much, I have booked to stay again for one week and will spend this time volunteering at the school with Herman and his friends.
I cannot recommend this highly enough if you are looking to really experience local life and a real ‘home stay’.
Nothing not to like!
I added a new booking while there and extended my stay, so I get to review twice. As mentioned in my other review, this is a truly amazing stay. It deserves two separate 5 star reviews.
Staying at Herman’s place was a true cultural experience. I left feeling like part of the family rather than just spending time with a host. He brought me to his school to volunteer teaching English and took me to his uncles Palm sugar farm to learn about the process of creating Brown sugar. Everyone in his family is very kind/welcoming and I really appreciated their hospitality during my week visiting. The Nasi goreng was the best I have had in Indonesia and I would also recommend the Banana Leaf Curry as it is very tasty as well. They catered to the fact I love spicy and always provided extra sambal for me :) The jungle nearby offers beautiful natural waterfalls with rice fields and many places to explore. It is a hidden gem away from the main tourist area in Tetebatu. The bed and blanket provided is generally comfortable. I highly recommend bringing a scooter with you or hiring a scooter when you arrive. This location is a bit secluded but this adds to the charm of the experience for me :)
Shower water is very cold and the weather was cold at times which made it difficult to shower. You will also experience creatures like cockroaches and geckos but this is part of being close to the jungle. I highly recommend staying with Herman and his family but you must understand this is not a luxury type of stay and the pricing is very fair and reflects the amenities provided. Laundry was quite expensive so if you plan to stay for a long period of time it might be worth finding somewhere else to do Laundry.
Very nice cabin in nature. Thank you to Herman and his family for their warm welcome. I had the chance to visit him at his school. A great experience
We enjoyed our stay and the highlight was having Herman take us on tours to local Rice terraces, waterfalls and seeing black monkeys all from the forest/jungle bordering the property. Herman was a gracious host and the accommodation was great value. We highly recommend this for your stay in this area.
The mosques are quite loud and the cows on the property have bells which can be heard from the room.
Excelent Value/price ratio
Good starting point - between waterfalls
Nice family
The family that lives here will remind you about the important aspects of life - things you may have forgotten without even realizing it.
The sheer simplicity of their livesyle creates space for what truly matters: a sense of belonging within a community in harmony with nature. Guided by their humbleness they strive to maintain a live worth living for men, nature and the gods.
Go meet them and relearn how to live.
It was a real authentic experience because you basically stay with the family but still have your privacy. The family is super friendly and welcoming. The bungalow is cute and very clean close to the jungle and not far away from beautiful waterfalls. Really authentic food cooked by the mother. I would recommend this place.
Hernan and his family are really welcoming ! The bungalow is clean and front of the jungle : it's perfect 😍
I loved the Lombok village like experience with a genuinely warm, interested, and loving family.
The bungalow is separate from the family buildings and is very peaceful apart from the mosques, but that wasn't for that long in the morning and evening.
It is also very well built and small but very clean. It is 5 years old.
You can walk out the back gate into the National Park, and you can swim in a waterfall not far away
It is in reasonably close proximity to several of the popular waterfalls.
This is a place where a scooter is handy.
I loved riding through the extremely interesting scenery and culture.
I particularly loved chatting to the host (who is a school teacher) and observing the dynamics of the family
A wonderful experience and value for money
There is nothing I didn't like in this genuine cultural experience.
You are getting incredibly good value for money
You get a pankake and kofi or tea for breakfast, so buy some fruit which is available locally.
There were no mosquitoes in August and mild evenings. The room has a pedestal fan
Cheers

Amazing family, nature vibes and great hospitality. I really enjoyed everything here and the coffee was absolutely delicious. Thank you so much for the beautiful stay :)
Wow!
My partner and I stayed here for 3 nights but we wished we booked a week.
Herman and his amazing family were so welcoming that in such a short time we really felt like a part of the family.
The room is simple but has everything you need and is kept super clean, the food is also delicious and cheap. The jungle is right at your front door, we went trekking in the morning to the small waterfall and the view of Mt. Rinjani and we even saw monkeys!
Herman even took us to see the bigger waterfalls and some beautiful local handcrafting shops dotted among stunning rice fields.
Surrounding area is also super authentic and mostly untouched by tourists, kids and families smile and wave as your ride past and the local food is delicious and very cheap. Not to mention just how beautiful the landscape is.
We highly recommend to stay here, Herman and his family made our time so much more special, we will definitely be coming back in the future.
Everything was absolutely amazing.
A very pleasant and friendly family. I felt right at home. The host Herman and his wife are very pleasant and there was coffee and/or tea on arrival and every time available for free. The coffee and all the food is locally produced and fresh.(Good Arabica coffe..NOT sugared Nescafe 0815, real good fresh coffee) It was prepared with fresh ingredients and was excellent. I ordered for the dishes Urap Urap & Gado Gado with fresh rice from their own rice fields which we ve visited. It was amazing. Thanks again for the delicious dinner and breakfast.
They offer tours to several waterfalls and beautiful views of the rice fields & jungle.(+more) In the morning we walked through the jungle and saw many monkeys in their own natural habitat including sunrise with views to Mt. Rinjani. I did not need to pay this, it was a free walk. (+ point)
The bungalow was very clean and comfortable.
If you like a jungle adventure in undisturbed nature, this is the place for you. The family is very authentic and likeable.
It is not a hotel. You live with a local authentic family on a farm but you have enough privacy when you want. Highly recommended for adventurers.
Gladly again.
Many thanks to Herman & Family.
Everything was perfect thank you very much <3

Herman and his family made us very welcome. The bungalow is lovely and clean. The tours were great. We saw monkeys, snakes, lizards, a view of Mt Rinjani, rice fields, countryside,, a traditional weaving village and loads of happy kids and locals everywhere we went. There are no other tourists in this little village and everyone made us feel special. This was a great experience for our family to see how locals live and good opportunity to support local eco tourism.
We had an amazing stay at Tereng Wilis jungle inn. Herman was the most wonderful host and made us feel so welcome. We were offered tea upon arrival and welcomed into the family. We were cooked for every night and given breakfast in the morning too. We had lovely chats with the family in the evenings and felt like part of their family! They took us to the local school as we are both teachers, and we taught English to the children. It was a truly wonderful experience that we will never forget! Herman also took us to the weaving village which was great. We will miss the family so much and couldn’t have asked for a better stay! Would highly recommend staying here if you want an authentic, local homestay experience.
It was slightly unclear that we were paying for the meals provided.
We would have liked a fan in the room as it was very hot.
I was welcomed into this family with such warmth and generosity - my heart is full ! Herman took me to visit the local school, waterfall, rice fields, pottery workshop and bamboo weavers - quite possibly the most beautiful part of my holiday 🧡 I was fed and taken care of so well - thank you so much! Recommended if you want to experience a local village and a beautiful family.
All was great!
