We absolutely loved staying on the water with the absolutely amazing kind owner, and all of her very friendly and cute cats.
The location is everything, it was so nice to pet the cats or sit on the decking and watch the world go by.
Lots of mosquitoes so bring good repellent :)
The house is in a unique location and beautifully decorated, with lots of art that give it a special character. The bed was comfortable and the air conditioning worked well. The owner was helpful, shared useful tips and organised a river cruise for me at a reasonable price. The cats were absolutely adorable, but of course you have to be a cat lover!
The location is quite isolated and inconvenient, as you need to take a water taxi (1$ each way) every time you want to get to the mainland. There is also relatively little to do in Kampong Ayer beyond walking around, with few restaurants or attractions.
I booked this place because of its excellent reviews and the opportunity to have a more local experience, but as a solo traveller, I honestly felt quite isolated. I spent most of my time alone and didn’t get to interact much with the owner (although I understand she was busy). On my first day, there was also a water cut, so I had to shower using bottled water. I appreciate that this was beyond the owner’s control, but the accommodation is considerably more expensive than similar options on Booking.com. The Wi-Fi was also extremely slow, even for basic tasks such as checking emails.
Overall, while the owner is a nice lady and the house has its charm, I’m not sure I would pay this price again given the inconveniences and the experience I had. I am not sure if it is a better fit for families or people looking for a very quiet stay, but I wouldn’t particularly recommend it for solo travellers or if you are staying 3-4 days. The owner is very kind, but I just wanted to leave an honest opinion, as I wish I had known these things beforehand so I could have made a more informed decision.
One of the best places I’ve ever stayed. A great experience to be on the water village. The host was a lovely person who made sure to make us feel extremely welcome and plan our itinerary. I strongly recommend staying here and following her advice, you will have a great time

I never stayed in a water village before. The village and its history is very interesting.
She has a very lovely, comfortable and inviting patio. My husband and I enjoyed morning and evenings on the patio watching the typical daily activity, etc.
The owner is a wonderful lady that is very thoughtful and loves to help others. In chatting with her, you can’t help but to see her huge heart.

It has a homey sense; we really felt like home. We spent four nights here. Most of the evenings, we enjoyed the veranda and saw the Brunei night sky.

Very unique experience and lovely view from the property across the water. Breakfast was also great and we felt comfortable to come and go as we please. The host also connected us with a private driver to help us get to and from airports in other cities- the driver was fantastic!
Cash payment was inconvenient but host let us know ahead of time so we could stop at an ATM in Brunei before checking in.
A must place to stay when you are in Brunei !
We had a wonderful time during our stay, Andrew was incredibly welcoming and took wonderful care of us. His son even offered us a ride to the airport at the end of our stay. The location is simply amazing and we had a blast exploring Brunei from there.
The bedroom and bathroom weren’t that clean. Lots of dust on fans and wear and tear. Older house and three cats, so it wasn’t a big deal, just thought I’d mention a place for improvement.
