The hotel was absolutely amazing, with stunning views in every direction. The décor is beautiful and thoughtfully done, and the rooms are lovely, spacious, and offer a great view as well. Breakfast was really good and made even better by enjoying it with such an incredible view. A special mention to Bill at reception, who was incredibly friendly and welcoming and made our stay even more enjoyable. Overall, a fantastic experience and a place I’d happily return to.
Nothing at all
The view was beautiful and it was wonderful to be able to walk out the door on a long walk to Wansfell Pike and to Ambleside. The staff were very nice and helpful.
The rooms and space were a little dated.
Excellent breakfast
Our room was in need of redecorating.
The views (of the lake, mountains...) and sounds (of the running water in the Ghyll) made the setting of Holbeck Ghyll idyllic. Ian took care of us so well with plenty of suggestions of areas to explore. Breakfast and dinner were delicious. Best sleep in a long time too!
NA
Quaint, beautiful views.
Furnishings, tired and worn. Needs some updating.
Lovely staff.
Great location.
View terrific from bedroom window.
Nice food.
Condition of windows in bedroom very poor due to cracked wood and old paint.
Bedroom curtains need attention.
Very nice old building and very well kept
Bar is a little expensive
Stunning views and beautiful interior, so much charm. Lovely staff members. The room was large and comfortable, had everything we needed.
Nothing
Impressive looking building and views we amazing from the property
A little dated and needs investment
Its ambience, location and views
Slightly tiring and in need of a bit of a brush up.
Great location, stunning views of Lake Windermere and mountains. Staff were great with particular mentions to Robert, Bill and Simon. The breakfast room and staff were excellent with a good cooked options. The bar and lounge were lovely areas with log burners and felt very welcoming. The New Year's Eve atmosphere was lovely and musician superb.
Our room was a Lodge room away from main building which wasn't expected. The room was tired with peeling wall paper, cracked wash basin, non-working heated towel rail. Our room also had an interconnecting door to adjacent room making it noisy. In the main house the dining room was cold due to drafty single glazed windows and insufficient heating. The evening meal was not of a standard becoming of a 4 star rated hotel. The hotel has massive potential and we would hope to return at some point to see if it has improved.
There is a trophy in the lobby - Best Small Hotel 2015. And that sums it up.
Everything is average, yet the prices are not.
Things are broken, worn, tired, out of service, late, missing.. whatever.
The staff know they are up against it, they do a fantastic job of really trying. Top marks for glossing over the issues.
Clearly this hotel has a higher management issue. The day to day staff are amazing, trying their very best and delivering within their limits.
But they arnt miracle workers, and neither should that be expected of them.
I know they have less staff than they need. The place hasn’t seen any capital improvements since the award above was granted.
I’d love to hear that this hotel gets a management shake up, and I return in a couple of years to check it out.
I have a sneaky suspicion this wont happen.
I’ve been here before and loved it hence my rerun .
Sadly it’s gone down the pan !! Literally !! The dinner was awful !! A revolting starter and dry mai course. Breakfast was good but the woman who served me was rude and very obnoxious / I’m actually going to complain to the hotel owner. I left this morning feeling very upset and sad that this once lovely hotel is now v badly run wit staff totally dis organised and unqualified to even make the most basic of cocktails. P
Quiet relaxing break, very friendly staff and hotel full of character. The electric controls for all the bedroom facilities was great too.
Nothing really, the access road is quite narrow but does have passing places, its quite steep places too.
