Excellent facilities especially the spa
We had a ground floor room under the stairs so heard other residents walking up to the 1st floor.
Loved the facilities, peaceful environment, great tennis court ( we enjoyed so much) and lovely little bar / restaurant with lovely Lori who always went extra mile.
We enjoyed everything .
Maybe our room was a little out dated but we watched Netflix and bed was comfortable too
Large with plenty to do
Very dated and noisy
The hotel is lovely, rooms are a good size and let in a lot of natural light. The bed is comfortable enough for 2 single mattresses put together. The location is stunning.
The breakfast was poor this time we stayed. It is normally fabulous, but I am unsure if they were understaffed, but tables were not cleared, we had to wait for beans and hash browns and there were only takeaway coffee cups available rather than mugs. We had to clear a table and then hunt for cutlery.
We also got given a room with an interconnecting door and unfortunately during the night the person in the room we were connected to tried very hard to open the door which woke us up and made us feel quite vulnerable. I had asked at check in if we could have a room with no interconnecting door, but unfortunately the hotel was fully booked so we were not able to have a different room.
The walls are quite thin, so we could hear people coming back to their rooms very late and they appeared to be quite intoxicated! We could also hear the person in the room next to us snoring very loudly!
Lovely surroundings.
Very comfortable room and clean.
Good facilities
Reception, bar and restaurant staff were friendly and helpful.
Rooms were a little 'tired' particularly the bathroom.
The swimming pool, jacuzzi and sauna are very good, clean and the changing rooms are very nice.
the room wasn’t cleaned clean upon check in but did not get cleaned throughout the stay.
Our room wasn’t cleaned when we put the note out on the door to be cleaned they just left towels and toilet roll on the floor but didn’t make the beds or anything.
The restaurant had a function on so the whole menu was limited, every time we asked for food the next day it was out of stock over 5/6 items. We asked for pizza, brownies, garlic bread.
The restaurant also are very confused about what menu they offer in the evenings we was told it was evening menu and club favourites we got a club favourite item on the Friday evening but come Saturday when it was different staff we were told that the club favourites are not included in the evening, we then asked for pizza to be told were not serving pizza due to the function, we asked for garlic bread it was sold out, so we said we will just go out to eat and they suggested that would be for the best. It was 8pm by this time on our wedding anniversary and we had to drive to Braintree village in the pitch black which was a 20 minutes drive.
The menus states different prices for the wine, one being £32 and one being £29 when I asked which one was correct they said we will keep the expensive one out.
Once you arrive most of the stuff like paddle is fully booked by members so hotel guests don’t really get a chance to book anything same with the classes, so don’t think your going for a nice relaxing spa weekend with classes and paddle as members can book in advance leaving you a very slim chance go book in for anything.
Space in the rooms was good for family size. Consideration was given for us, having been placed on the ground floor. The reception staff, and cleaning staff friendly and attentive.
We had to ask for extra drinking utensils, as we were only given two initially. Same with biscuits, tea, and milk on a daily basis. We went to dinner on the first evening and walked out due to the menu being so minimal, with no options for our children. And the bar/restaurant staff overlooked us whilst we waited for their help. This point was also raised by a table next to us. The website suggested toiletries were luxury, and they were not. The reception did provide me with some samples on my checkout.
Modern, clean and comfortable
Nothing, all good
Excellent pool area
Couldn’t play golf as was working. Ha
I booked a 2 round golf break here for my 40th birthday in August for myself and 7 of my best friends.
We decided to play the 9 hole twice on the first day as we were told the quality of that course was very good and on par with the 18 hole course. Unfortunately the greens were terrible and we couldn't have a competitive game. We shrugged it off and treated it as a practice social warm up round for the proper round on the second day.
On the morning of the second day, we noticed that there was some early course maintenance going on (sanding the greens) which we hadn't been pre warned of.
On closer inspection of the 18th we noted that there was a huge amount of twig and large debris mixed in with the sand, which was now all across the greens. I spoke to the maintenance guys and they assured us that all the greens which are having this done will be cleared of the debris straight away and before we reach them. We said ok fair enough and carried on.
By the time we reached the 18th hole, we had come across only 3 holes which had not been sanded and were possible to putt on without the ball changing its direction numerous times.
The greens were totally unplayable and trying to actually make a putt from over half a meter away was a lottery as the debris was large enough to change the direction of the ball. Trust me when I say it wasn't just a few bits which you'd usually just pick up. The whole game was ruined and the winner was chosen by whoever was luckiest on the day.
We saw many maintenance guys around, even 2 on a golf buggy with a leaf blower which we had hoped they were planning to use on the greens.
We also let 2 members play though us who jokingly said to us "I hope they aren't charging you to play here today cos this is shocking!"
I never usually bother to complain about things but as this was my 40th and Ive had to endure months of friendly mocking!! Which will never leave me! I felt on this occasion I would give my feedback.
So when I received my feedback email from Golf Breaks I let them know what had happened. This is where my experience went from bad to painful (No fault of Golf Breaks, they were very good). Golf Breaks were very quick to respond and said they would contact The Essex for me. A couple of weeks later Golf Breaks followed that up to see the outcome, I advised them I hadn't heard from the Essex. GB replied and advised they had contacted the Essex again and that a manager would call me. A couple of weeks went past and I emailed Golf Breaks to advise I still hadn't heard from them.
GB apologised and contacted them again, the following day I got a call from a manager at Essex who apologised for the situation and that no one had got back to me.
He took all the details and said he would speak to his senior and come back to me.
Radio silence again!
Another month went by and a couple more emails back and forth from GB about how someone will call.
Eventually in November the Essex manager called back who apologised for not coming back to me again, he'd been on holiday (a long one I guess!).
We discussed the issues again and what would be reasonable as compensation and was assured I would get a call back with an outcome soon.
I never heard from them again and don't have the time to keep going with emails and calls.
Clearly they are not bothered about ensuring everyone has a great experience and returns again for future rounds.
Very very disappointed golfer! :(
Nice room. Great location. Fast response to additional requests. Super pool and facilities
The bar was a little soulless. But we did go in very early.
