Milan. A five-star hotel. An atmosphere of luxury… and Cartier glasses that simply disappeared.
It seems like a routine situation: a guest contacts the administration and expects basic actions such as a check, an internal investigation, cameras, and security. After all, this is a five-star hotel in the center of Milan, not a roadside hostel.
But this is where the real level of service begins.
The hotel politely informs us that in order for them “to do anything,” we need to contact the authorities in Ukraine and send them a formal report from there.
So the glasses disappeared in Italy, on the hotel’s premises, among its staff, under its cameras and its responsibility. But according to this five-star logic, Ukrainian authorities, who have absolutely nothing to do with Italy, are supposed to handle it.
We decided to check, just in case we misunderstood something. So we contacted them. They looked at us with genuine surprise and asked: “What do Ukrainian authorities have to do with an Italian hotel and events that took place in Milan? This is not our jurisdiction.”
And that is a very fair question.
Which leads to the next one: what exactly does the administration of a five-star hotel do if, when guests lose their belongings, they are told to deal with international bureaucracy, waste their time, and explain to Ukrainian officials what happened in Milan?
The new service standard seems to look like this. Lose something in the hotel and get ready for an international quest.
Step one: file a report in a country that has nothing to do with the incident.
Step two: send it to the hotel where everything happened.
Step three: maybe then they will say, “we will look into it.”
Five stars. Relais & Châteaux. A historic building. Designer rooms.
And a level of service that says: deal with it yourselves, preferably somewhere far away.
