Grand historic hotel full of character in the residents' section. Loved all the pictures on the walls of famous British rock climbs, local climbers and the golden age of Alpinism. Beautiful dining room and comfortable residents' lounge with a great library of Alpine Club journals. My single room was fine with a comfortable bed, old fashioned wooden furniture, clean bathroom (with large bath), TV, kettle/tea/coffee, bed lamp. Wifi good everywhere. Excellent breakfast with good menu choice. Public bar is very pleasant with reasonable range of bar meals and excellent real ale on tap. Pleasant outdoor drinking areas by the river. Receptionist and bar staff all very pleasant and helpful
Some people have complained about the old furnishings and carpets. Ignore them - this is an old fashioned hotel with character and history. If you don't like that sort of thing and want somewhere modern then go elsewhere. Plenty of old inns in the Lakes have been bought up by corporate organisations and had the life refurbished out of them. They might suit you better
Long may this place retain its character
The window didn't stay open which was a nuisance as it was a hot night.
I was lucky to get a saver deal so the price was fair. Otherwise I think the rooms tend to be rather overpriced in general which is why I have waited a long time to stay here. If the hotel promotes more saver midweek deals then I will be back
One of the best hotels I've ever stayed at for staff, location, food and price. It was my 60th birthday and the receptionist gave me a free room upgrade which was a wonderful act of kindness after a particularly difficult day.
Location and staff excellent
Filthy carpets, leak outside the bedroom when it rained. Buckets in the corridors catching the leak, electrical gone when it rained..
Very good

Amazing location, very friendly, lovely to our dog
The access road is narrow and full of potholes
Excellent and just what I needed for one night and it had a bath
Location location location, right at the heart of the mountain .
Difficult to get to but likely the reason it’s remained unspoilt!
The location was extraordinary. At the absolute end of a long winding road sandwiched between amazing dry stone walls, the beautiful lake and the incredible mountains.
The staff were amazing. Florence the waitress who runs everywhere to make sure tables are cleared and hot food is delivered, receptionist Sophie was so friendly. We felt that her genuine awe of being in this historic inn was still so fresh.
We stayed for 3 days and with a restricted diet of being vegetarian and only being fed by Wasdale inn, we could have a range of fresh delicious food.
Having to leave!
Stunning location, amazing views, a timeless feel, good pub meals, and a good take away breakfast that powered us to the top of Scafell Pike. We liked our double room and the kids loved the triple room they stayed in. Other features include the adjacent shop with useful hiking supplies and the stream at the back where we cooled our feet.
It’s quite expensive - but worth it for its unique atmosphere and amazing location
location is the best, breakfast brilliant
a bit pricey for the quality of the rooms
The best Lake District hotel to stay in
wonderful views, a traditional English Inn, wiht pub and quiet sitting room too. Excellent breakfast. Lots of old photos of Mountaineers
Fabulous staff - very helpful and friendly
Beautiful location and the rooms were clean.
Shower pressure was very low
Fabulous location in the mountains. Peaceful. Comfortably furnished room. Loved the washing line that pulled out over the bath.
Quite expensive for what it is, but in line with other hotels in the area.
The history of the place is amazing. The whole place is set up for visitors and they do a great job!
The room was aged and I couldn't turn down the radiator.
