Fantastic value and exceptional food
Pros:

Very quaint and the authentic setting. Staff are lovely and the food is exceptional. We had the taster menu and an evening stay and it was perfect.

Really lovely, well located place to stay, could do with a few improvements to maximise potential.
Pros:

The location, character and staff of this hotel were great! Our room overlooked the cathedral which was spectacular and not noisy at all with road or pedestrian noise. The room provided elements for every occasion and was well equipped. The continental element of the breakfast was delicious! If you sold your homemade granola and pain au chocolat, they'd sell like hotcakes!

Cons:

The full English element was tasty but I feel it was over engineered. I left breakfast feeling very full and satisfied, even though I left half the cooked breakfast; the mushroom in particular gave me the heebie jeebies... Additionally, the room was ample and did the job nicely for one night, but could do with a little attention to detail on decoration. The whole building and location is stunning and enchanting, however I feel the rooms didn't reflect the grandeur and history it deserved.

Great staff, great location
Pros:

I think the best way to describe The Old Deanery is 'a restaurant with rooms'. The staff were super friendly and helpful and accommodating. Though in an attic room, there were great views of the cathedral from both the small windows in the bedroom and shower room. The cathedral is literally on the other side of the road and The Old Deanery is perfectly located for the town/city. A 'superior room', it came with Molton Brown toiletries. The large towels are LARGE and soft. Very comfy sofa and chair. The homemade bread, pastries and crumpets for breakfast were delicious. A quirky reception room/lounge, stamped with the personality of the owners.

Cons:

Room 9 is a little 'tired' and could do with a refresh soon, and there are old shelves stacked up on the top of the wardrobe. As a superior room, it was said to have both a bath and a shower (in the Booking dot com checklist) but only had a shower. (We didn't need or want a bath, so just pointing it our.) We stayed on a Wednesday night - when the kitchen was closed - so didn't feel the need for the taster-menu theme - a key feature of the dinners (when served) - to carry through to breakfast. The homemade bread, pastries, smoothy, etc. were delicious - as I've already said - but I'd have preferred a more relaxed, leisurely affair. Breakfast is a time to ease into the day!

Breakfast was ok. Wouldn’t stay again
Pros:

Location

Cons:

Uncomfortable bed and very lumpy pillows. Shower sprayed the wall rather than spraying out, not enough lighting in the bedroom, desperately needed decorating, flaking paint, heated towel rail didn’t work so damp towels, carpet needed cleaning

Amazing food bedrooms and bathrooms need attention
Pros:

The breakfast was amazing

Cons:

Whilst acknowledging it is a listed building it still needs some TLC. Paintwork in bedroom shabby, shower over bath small and difficult to climb in if you have any age related mobility issues. TV very small and mattress had seen better days with the edges gone to the extent my partner rolled put as it gave way.

We would stay again but certainly not in the same room.
Pros:

We love the property and the breakfast was delicious!
Staff were great too 🤩

Cons:

The shower was a nightmare…
There were no plug sockets near mirrors for me to style my hair with my hair straighteners, I ended up having to put my small mirror on the window sill and plugging my straightener in behind the tv and had to bend down and rest on my knees to do my hair.
This caused me a lot of stress and exacerbated my chronic pain condition massively..
