Height of summer and room was light a sauna. Didn’t sleep a wink.
room
The exterior is lovely. The pool and grounds really picturesque.
Did not have the ambiance or guest services of a 5* hotel. Quite shockingly poor reception at check in. We were told all the family rooms were sold out, however we only saw one other child on the property. We did not realized the main hotel did not have air con, and thankfully we were moved to adjoining rooms in another part of the property. No special activities or welcome for the children as advertised on the website (activities, picnics, small bathrobes). Limited hours for children at the pool and we were told the children could not keep jumping into the water, despite them trying to carefully not splash others. Not a family friendly or fun/relaxed environment for parents. Our older children were playing during children’s pool hours. Seems like the hotel is currently under poor management. Very young, very limited staff expected to carry out a luxury experience for guests seems unfair. Food and drinks were underwhelming, especially for the price, and service was very slow. While some of the staff was engaging, most walked past us looking very stressed. We made reservations for dinner under the impression things were very full, only to arrive and see many empty tables. We were looking forward to a special stay and this location didn’t meet the mark.
Reception staff are useless and rude
The hotel building and grounds are exceptional. We had a beautiful suite and gorgeous linen on the bed and towels in the bathroom.
In our 5 star hotel you expect the little extras- evening turn down service, staff pre-empting your needs in the restaurant and bar. These aspects we felt were missing.
Stylish and luxurious, beautiful grounds and stunning food. Service was excellent and the rooms are absolutely gorgeous. Well worth it for a special occasion.
The outdoor pool which looked fab wasn’t open.
What a fabulous place to stay, a little bit of luxury to finish our 3 week Europe trip on and it delivered. My husband and I also had some spa services which were divine. The staff were very friendly and service was incredible. We would 100% visit again.
Beautiful property festive and charming decorations
Walking on stones outdoors in heels
I loved the hotel and the room. The breakfast was amazing and overall, it was a brilliant stay where I felt looked after. Thank you
For luxury (at a price) you cannot beat Great Fosters. We knew it was going to be a fantastic stay and had high expectations which on the whole were met. Our meal at the Tudor Pass restaurant was stunning and the service in the hotel is out of this world. The bed in our room was super comfortable - bath and shower fabulous and the decor is a great example of taking a box (room in the coach house) and making it feel cared for and thought out. Simple but with careful twists.
COST
It's the cost really. I felt as if I was being charged just to breathe in the luxury and I don't think it needs to be that. It is a Michelin starred restaurant and as such you expect elevated prices and I cannot fault the food or service but I had thought there was an option for the shorter courses menu. I have eaten long course lunches here before so didn;t relaly need the signature taster menu- in the end we were in there for nearly 3 hours and combined with the fact we had a cocktail in the bar beforehand, the bill felt sinful. I was shocked and it means I won't be at the January sales! I guess that is how the other half lives.
BRING A PHYSICAL CREDIT CARD
There was also a moment with reception regarding the fact we had not brought a physical credit or debit card with us. This meant we could not use anything extra in the room or something because they could not take a £100 gurantee. I felt constrained by that and whenver I opened the fridge i epxepcetd the concierge to appear! I didn't know if the water in the fridge would be charged (I have been in other 5* plus hotels around the world and usually it is free) so I went without - there is always tap water!
FIX THE DEEP HUM ON THE HEATING
And the final thing, if we are talking about luxury - can you fix the noise on the heating in room 36 please - whenever it was on there was a loud low hum which was unacceptable. We turned the heating off in the end - thankfully the room was warm enough.
A beautiful historic hotel with stunning grounds and very helpful staff.
We were very disappointed with our stay. In the first room we were given, the bathroom light was not working. We were then moved to Room 55, where unfortunately the heating and the internet were not working either. We asked for an electric heater, which was brought to the room. The mattress was too soft and the pillows were uncomfortable.
Overall, these issues took away all the magic and beauty of what is otherwise a lovely place.
