Location is great. We have visited in the past and decided to night-stop for a treat. It is a wonderful place to stop for a drink and watch the world go by.
We are getting older and have reduced mobility. We were disappointed to find so little to help those with mobility needs. The receptionist kindly carried our overnight bags upstairs and pointed out the 'shortcut' to the dining area, we were reluctant to use this route as there were no bannisters on the stairway. The bedroom was warm and comfortable and the bathroom had a large impressive bathtub. Unfortunately, there were no guard rails to assist entry and exit
We enjoyed a drink sitting outside, but I was disappointed that traditional beers had been replaced by heavily 'citrussed' Brewdog- style makes I changed to a beer labelled 'traditional bitter' only to find it had a strong Citrus
aftertaste.
The dinner menu puzzled us as it seemed to reflect extremes of taste. The majority of offerings were 'vegetarian ' but the alternatives were 'game'. The whole menu seemed to be based on the use of cabbage.
I had the venison which was very good. My wife, who is not a fan of game had a choice of venison or wood pigeon, so opted for a celeriac and hazelnut 'Kiev', which was bland
The puddings were very nice but the whole meal was expensive for what it contained.
The breakfast broke away from what I would regard as Cumbrian fare to offer beef and potato hash, which was bland and unattractive to look at The sourdough toast and jam were very nice - fortunately.
This was a disappointing stay that failed to provide a good value proposition.
I would be challenged to select a dinner from the menu if we had stayed two nights.
Fantastic location and charm
No shower in room
Lovely place run by Lovely people.
The breakfast was pretty good
The option of a full English breakfast
Food was exceptional, staff attentive and friendly, great wine list and local ales and the room and the bath was perfect after a long day of walking!
The D Duck is in an ideal location. Just far enough up a hill to keep the crowds away.
Charming old property on a stunning location. Delicious and unusual breakfast. Very sweet staff. Great bathroom and very warm.
Everything was lovely
A great location with everything you want in such an establishment. The staff were friendly and helpful. Bar prices are not out of the way. The bar has a good buzz and good selection.
I have known the Duck for over 50 years and although I enjoyed our stay it wasn’t as good as I had hoped. The staff are great but things were beginning to slide a little. The access to the accommodation was weedy and the patio area was locked and overgrown. Repairs were wanting. The food was good but rather expensive. It was OK, but at the price , I wanted better.
This was a return visit after 15 years and we weren't disappointed. It's had a makeover and feels a bit less traditional and rustic than it used to - but the staff are friendly and efficient and standards are high. The room was cosy and the bed exceptionally comfortable, and we had a classic postcard vista of Helvellyn from the private seating area outside our room.
Just be aware that there's a strong emphasis on vegetarian dishes - don't build up your hopes for a breakfast fry-up, for example. The menu's imaginative but some of the plant based dishes can seem a little bland. And it's not cheap - but this is the Lakes.
The food was fantastic, we really enjoyed our stay here and will definitely be returning. Perfect place to stay to explore the lakes.
Friendly and helpful staff Excellent food with an ethical slant...lots of vegetarian options as well as sustainable meat(venison)
No tea/coffee making in the room.
Lovely location. Friendly and accommodating staff.
Cosy room with lovely view over the valley.
Great breakfast
Evening menu limited if you weren’t into eating game
