The Eccles Hotel and Spa is vast, with many guests and seating areas. The breakfast was ample and delicious, with self-serve cold items as well as hot items to order from the menu. The room pillows were my favorite.
This trip was a celebration of my friend’s 80th birthday. I was sure to get a place with an elevator since she walks with a cane. The problem was that the elevator took you to a floor, but because of the vastness of the various levels, she still had to walk up and down 19 steps, and go an extensive distance to get to our room. I felt bad for her. The halls were not clearly marked with how to get back to reception (there was only one sign), and the elevator doors were not marked as well. (It was like a maze.) In addition, our view was of the dirt/plant/working/yard portion of the hotel, so we listened to someone rolling up what sounded like a water hose the night before, and also a truck coming for a load the morning we were trying to sleep in. (There was no sleeping in.) Our stay definitely did not feel calm and spa-like whatsoever.
Lovely historical hotel
Nothing
We had a great view of the sea from our room, beds really comfy and had a delicious dinner.
Hot tubs not working.
Spotless amd staff were great
The hotel has it's spirit, good location, big parking place. You can find gowns and slippers in your room, everything you need for a hot tea or coffee. It is very clean. I liked the food at the bar, the vegetarian dishes were delicious and original. Breakfast was very good, many options, tasty. You can have it with a view to a beautiful bay.
I was disappointed when I didn't get the spa service that was the reason I chose this hotel. The jacuzzi didn't work, and you have to book in advance and pay extra for the sauna (10€ for a half an hour for a person) and it is open only till 6pm. It's disappointing that spa treatments aren't included in the price of a rather luxurious hotel. I paid for my stay in advance and I felt unsafe when they asked me for my bank card details - they wrote down the number and code.
We absolutely loved our stay at Eccles Hotel and Spa and talk about it all the time! It was like stepping into a movie and back in time! It is an historic grand old hotel with the ambience you would expect of that kind of place. A lovely dining room with wonderful service and professional, considerate staff. Our room was small but looked over the water and, while parts of the hotel could use some updating, we wouldn't change a thing and would love to go back! It is also a beautiful drive through the mountains from Glengarriff to Kenmare and we had the best couple of days!
Terrace restaurant.
Bar wasn't great.
The best bed and pillows we have had on our month long trip
Nothing
The breakfast was good and we liked the history of the hotel and the location.
We didn’t have hot water in our room for the four days we stayed so as it was very inclement rainy and cold weather a hot shower would have been more then welcome
We did not like the male manager of the bar staff who served us on the evening of Tuesday and Wednesday night. He was thoroughly condescending and if he saw us during the day completely ignored my friend and I. We are like sisters and have travelled extensively together over the last 30 years to many parts of Europe, Asia, Middle East in 5 and 4 star hotels and as anyone know unpleasant or unwelcoming staff are the biggest headache and leave a so/so memory of a hotel that should have be remembered with extremely fond memories.
Location and classic design

The welcome, the hospitality.
The steps...
Bedroom & bathroom was clean & comfortable. Lots of Parking available. Staff were friendly. Lunch in the bar was good. Temperature in the room was comfortable, the weather was warm.
Spa treatments, massage and facial were very good. I would highly recommend a massage.
The outdoor spa area is a bit tired looking and has alot of potential to really impress. It is a shame, as had a fantastic experience otherwise regarding our treatments. The staff were very polite and friendly in the spa.
Breakfast was very dissapointing. We ordered a full Irish and I couldn't eat 80% of what was on the plate. The scrambled egg was rubbery and the mushrooms and bacon were very overdone. The breakfast had hints of being sat under a heat lamp for too long. This was very dissapointing given that we ordered off the breakfast menu. Ordering breakfast off a menu at a hotel usually guarantees freshly made, dishes served directly to your table, unlike breakfast self serve buffets. Our breakfasts were most definitely not freshly made to order. Another tell tale sign was, how quickly the staff served the cooked breakfast. It came out within a few minutes of ordering. I hadn't had time to look at what fruit/yoghurt options were on offer. We stayed mid week out of school holidays in May. The hotel seemed quiet (not too many guests) and there were at most, six tables dining at the same time as us for breakfast. We enjoyed our stay at the hotel however, I would certainly give breakfast a miss if we were to ever return. It really was not worth the extra cost.
