The view. The staff were very friendly.
This is by no means a slating as it must be very hard to upkeep such an old property but it is very tired (with the exception of the bathrooms they look as if they’ve been recently renovated). The rooms were not clean. There was mould all over the bathroom blind. The rooms had cobwebs everywhere and behind the headboard was just dirty. The towels were falling to pieces and there was a continual smell of damp.
When we returned from Keswick (around 9pm) there was no one anywhere. The walk from the bus stop to the hotel is treacherous! The road to the hotel is full of huge potholes and there is no lighting.
We were the only guests in for the night but on arrival, it was hard to get into the property and one of the employees walked straight past us and ignored us. When he walked back we said the door was locked - he then engaged with us.
Location
Location, beautiful outdoor setting . Great location not far out of Keswick. Aesthetically the exterior and setting is really lovely.
It is very dated. The lounge area is set up like an old age home. There was no bar area open. It's a lovely old property which could look so much nicer with a little effort. The room was nice enough. Comfy beds, but dated bathroom.. takes ages to get hot water and people next door sounded like they were in our room. It wasnt an awful stay by any stretch of the imagination but I wouldn't stay again unless I had to. Breakfast option is only full English and basics like yoghurt etc.
I am only going by my experience and the room we were in , I can't say what the rest of the rooms were like.
There are reviews on TripAdvisor that are similar to mine from years ago and so it seems it will never change, which is sad 😔
The situation and views are stunning, breakfast was lovely and plenty. We only saw 2 brothers and there was always one available.
Not their fault but there was only us there, they offered to open the bar from 6pm to 8pm for us but we decided to go to the kings head across the road(10mins walk),would probably return in summer
The hotel was very clean and the views were stunning
Found the hotel very aged could do with an update. Evening meal was adequate but was very limited only a main course available and only a choice of 4 things. Bathroom and bedroom very clean and the bed very comfortable but the rise and fall on the shower was held together with black tape.
Location and grounds are excellent. The staff were welcoming and friendly. The cooked breakfast was very nice, with a good variety of cereals etc. Our room was spacious enough for our needs with a great view over the hotel grounds and Thirlmere.
Not so much that we didn't like it, but the big piece of wood attached to the room key made us laugh. On arrival we were told they don't open the hotel restaurant on a Sunday, I don't remember reading that anywhere when booking, or being told prior to our arrival. It wasn't a massive problem in the end as we drove into Keswick about 10 mins away, which had lots of options for food. The only thing we'd actually have a moan about was the shower water pressure, it just dribbled out, and after a long day of walking/hiking a good hot shower would have been great, it was still usable but by no means enjoyable.
The location was exceptional. Wifi was awful. Not easy to find location. Postcode takes somewhere else. Always use the hotel name to get to the right location
Room was really big and comfy. Staff is super friendly. Food is vegetarian friendly. Exceptional lakeside view from the room. Very clean room and bathroom.
The food was excellent, the location was excellent and the staff were extremely friendly and efficient.
The heating in the room wasn't great.
Location, view, accommodation, facilities, friendly owner, great breakfast
What's not to like?
Lovely location by the lakeside.
The shower in our room was not very powerful. Small portions at breakfast.
Very nice venue, beds really comfy. Rooms clean. Linens and towels clean
WiFi was poor (may not be a bad thing if you want to escape)
Very clean, quiet place ,amazing view!
It was a pleasure to walk on the paths around the lake.
The reception room would be more welcoming if it were brighter and classical or ambient music could be heard in the background!
The viewing is amazing!
Location is lovely. Hotel is quaint being an old country house. The two gentlemen running the place go out of their way to make you welcome. Food including the breakfast was lovely, cooked fresh to order and served with a smile and a friendly chat. With gorgeous walks from the doorstep and views over Thirlmere from the room, what more could you want?
The evening dining room could be warmer but this is February.
A nice welcome on arrival. Nothing was to much trouble. Friendly staff, very comfortable, excellent food and a beautiful location!
Wifi a little slow but not really a problem as we still was able to access it.
The location is stunning.
Customer service is excellent.
Beautiful cooked breakfast.
Amazing historic building.
Cold room due to heating being on a timer, only warmed up of a night.
Terrible shower, more of a trickle and luke warm.
Impossible to get a phone data/wifi signal.
